Roman Polanski finally going to pay the piper?
Astrojanitor replied to Beerball's topic in Off the Wall Archives
This. Also, this all happened at a party at jack Nicholson's house, so why don't people ask why jack Nicholson is hanging out with 13 year old girls on quaaludes in a hot tub? Its a gross situation, but it happened 30 years ago. The "victim" doesn't care--isn't that all that matters? Besides, you make Chinatown you get to do some molesting. Just like Phil Spector gets one free murder. For "Be My baby" we can live without a hostess at the House of Blues. -
Speaking of Dylan: There are lines in Positive Fourth Street which are so truthful it's almost painful to listen to. For some reason the Johnny Rivers version is the one that kills me the most. Actually I do know the reason--but it's far too personal to bulletin board about. The Johnny Rivers goofily psychedelic album (Realization) is a bit of a guilty pleasure--but the 4th St cover slays me On the flip side: When I was a college DJ I started every single show with Chartered Trips by Husker Du off of Zen Arcade. Lyrically it's impressionistic gibberish, but the vibe of the song strikes me as the most honest piece of music I've ever heard. To me the song is like a Jackson Pollack canvas--it's pure unbridled emotion. rage, angst, frustration: can all be summed up by this blast of pure punk fury. Situationally (not a word) it may be meaningless, but emotionally it feels like absolute truth. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFE5o0rjDPc Somewhere in the middle: Drive by Gaslight Anthem. I spent a lot of years either playing in terrible bands or helping terrible bands. Many times I quit a job in order drive some go nowhere punk band up and down the east coast. Drive feels exactly like it is to go from one gig playing in front of 9 people to another in front of 12. The exhaustion and exhilaration that comes from doing something you find to be both noble and criminally under appreciated--especially when you love and get along with the other guys in the band--is perfectly articulated in Drive. I never want to do it again, but the song feels exactly like some really great wasted time.

god I love PIL so so much. Just so much. Death Disco? my god, no one makes music that intense. love love love that band, but man this PIL cash grab is driving me nuts. No Levine? No Wobble? This PIL thing is like the Who now -
I don't know man, in my experience ideas that stupid/crazy either end up amazing or unwatchable. There's no room for ok in zombie Beatles
-
that sounds like the greatest idea ever. There has been talk of a 3-d Yellow Submarine remake--which I've been dreading. But Mick Jagger zombie hinter sounds like all of my greatest dreams come true

by the by, if you dig Dead Weather do check out Royal Trux--in particular their album Pound by Pound. Royal Trux are very clearly the model for Dead Weather.

you're probably not wrong. Though the new Fall record is going to be a contender. And the new Roky Erickson. And Woods. but yeah, I'm getting crazy excited for the new Gaslight

Going to see Keith Emerson & Greg Lake this weekend....
Astrojanitor replied to The Poojer's topic in Off the Wall Archives
In James Gang's defense, Joe Walsh left the band in 1971 or 72. That post Walsh stuff was pretty terrible. I envy this show. I don't really dig on prog, but I've always loved ELP. For some unknown reason I became obsessed with Tarkus in college. I used to get high to that record 2-3 times a week for years. -
So just found out my Fiance has been cheating on me
Astrojanitor replied to Stl Bills's topic in Off the Wall Archives
nope, I just don't remember phone numbers or e-mail addresses. it's all saved so I don't bother. I have memorized exactly no one's telephone number or e-mail address. Or actual address. If I delete someone's information I have no way of ever getting in touch with them (unless I go stalking on one of those social network thingys). Sometimes you have got to appreciate the alienating aspects of modern technology. Almost makes me want to google second life to figure out what it is. Almost. -
74....gah, still too long. I should start smoking again

Astrojanitor replied to Stl Bills's topic in Off the Wall Archives
yeah man, I've been there too. Maybe even twice, actually. it's in our nature to expect a good reason for someone doing something so horrible. Don't expect one. the smartest thing I did after my current breakup was to immediately purge my phone and computer of all of her contact information. Luckily she's deploying to afghanistan in a couple weeks--I'll never have to see her again thankfully. But removing the temptation of contact was the one healthy thing i did. -
True story: last year PETA tried to get the Pet SHop Boys to change their name to the Animal Shelter Boys as it sent a more positive message. Now I care about animal rights far more than human rights (sorry people, not really a fan) but that is straight up idiotic and makes the cause look like a joke. I don't blame people at all for not taking animal rights seriously since PETA are the ones who have voted themselves king of the movement.

As a vegetarian I have to say few things annoy me more than vegetarians trying to convert. Nothing more irritating than guilt based conversion: politics, religion, basic life decisions....all obnoxious. I haven't watched the video since I find PETA to be a useless organization that only turns people off the cause. But there is a major difference to a piece of garbage choking and drowning dogs for his own amusement and an industry that provides food

Is anyone here a psychotherapist?
Astrojanitor replied to Celtic_soulja's topic in Off the Wall Archives
the purpose of psychotherapy is not to "cure," as that is mostly impossible. The purpose of psychotherapy is to help you manage your narcissism and create a life in which narcissistic behavior would in fact be beneficial. There are some aspects of life that can be improved with narcissism--a psychotherapist would have you focus on those. They would also have you work on empathy so you don't, say, scream at a cashier in pizza hut for getting a weak pie. -
Killer bands. Both very pleasant surprises for the last few months. And you can never go wrong with some Jane and Serge. Their Histoire de Melody Nelson finally got reissued. Probably too sleazy to be considered "chill," but still one of those perfect albums

Students sent home from school for wearing
Astrojanitor replied to BarkLessWagMore's topic in Off the Wall Archives
The intent is pretty obvious. We all went to high school, how many times did kids show up wearing American Flag shirts? It was clearly some misguided protest about something they don't fully understand. Though being sent home is pretty harsh. I mean who actually celebrates Cinco de Mayo? Drunk frat boys? -
Students sent home from school for wearing
Astrojanitor replied to BarkLessWagMore's topic in Off the Wall Archives
schools are very paranoid these days. mostly the fault of hyper sensitive parents who sue over everything. remember the flak over that school in NJ last year because the kids sang a song about the presidents, on presidents day, and there was a line about Obama? At OSU I had to have students sign a waiver at the beginning of my film class saying they have no problem with watching R rated films. Parents lose their minds over the stupidest things. -
Any Diamond experts here? I need to sell one
Astrojanitor replied to stevestojan's topic in Off the Wall Archives
keep in mind I bought that shirt and blu ray. So that like $25 right there. I think I drank away about $200 and put the rest in checking. But then I like Rye. Rye is cheap. Think I bought like 30 Lps too. But yeah, rye is good stuff -
Parents don't have to agree to cover the child, especially if they cannot afford the insurance. I had to go a few years without because of grad school, my parents would have happily allowed me to stay on their insurance while I was off trying to better myself. The expense to keep a child on an insurance plan is minimal...certainly less than to independently buy a plan or, heaven forbid, paying off medical expenses due to an accident. it's a good idea that allows protection in a time when many entry level positions do not offer benefits or when an unpaid internship is necessary in order to get your foot in the door.

don't be a drama queen. This is about people lashing out at informed opinion. Tim graham is not a member of the "ruling elite" he was simply one of the handful of people on the site who knew what they were talking about.
-
oh please, I'm not in high school. I don't wikipedia anything. And his comments do hold more water than mine since he has access to actual information and professionally writes on the topic I'm opine about when bored. Just as my comments on film and music hold more water than his since I've studied it for years, published on it, and lectured on it. Informed opinion trumps opinion. Always.
-
maybe, but this isn't a brain surgery forum is it? In the mass of football opinion on this site elite are those who can add actual information to their fantasy football picks.
-
elite means the best of a group. You work to become elite in a field. Comparing the need to respect informed opinion to the feudal concept of the ruling elite is insane and best and stupid at worst.
