Obviously Brees is light years ahead of Peterman in most if indeed not all factors relevant to performance at the all important position. But arm strength is probably not the item that most accounts for the obvious gap in ability. First of all it should be recognized that "arm strength" in this context has relatively little to do with the strength of that part of the human anatomy. In football "arm strength" comes more from the core, hips and legs than the "arm" as such. In fact you absolutely do not want your QB relying on the strength of his arm and why good mechanics are essential to both velocity and accuracy - we should now all be familiar with this for obvious reasons i.e. Josh Allen. Drew Brees is a great passer not because his arm is strong but because he is smart, can make pre and post snap reads, has great field vision enabling him to go through his progressions quickly and smoothly, and because his throwing mechanics are absolutely impeccable making for very high rpms on his ball that promote accuracy and velocity. While his arm strength has declined somewhat with the years it is these other things that have permitted him to continue playing at a very high level. But Drew Brees never had a cannon and has never been a gunslinger. Core strength and good mechanics are things that QBs can and do work on routinely and Peterman is probably smart enuf to understand that these items should be near the top of his to do list. IMO the lack of velocity on quick outs made to his right are mechanical and therefore is potentially a correctable problem. He doesn't seem to have the same problem throwing that pass to his left but it's the mechanics for those two throws that are different. I don't know how or whether Peterman will pan out but I do think he can greatly benefit from studying Brees's game because that's the general type of QB that his mental and physical skill set would best enable him to become.

Peterman pros and cons...
starrymessenger replied to ChicagoRic's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If he's to have any kind of career in the NFL Peterman has a lot to prove and, in the circumstances, the odds are stacked against him. He's a second year player with almost no in season experience. His O line and WR group are, until proven otherwise, sub par. The jury is still out on whether his arm is adequate (at best) or something less. These early season games will be a daunting test not only of Peterman but of his OC. If they can extend some of what we've seen in preseason to the regular season it will be a major accomplishment. If Peterman actually consistently plays well it will be very good news for the Bills. -

Hes worse. 77 yards on 35 targets last year. That's 2.2 yards per. Worst in NFL history. Flacco loves to stretch the field. If BR couldn't do it there what makes people he can do it here. -

At least Robert could block. Brashad looks to have fantastic measurables - and nothing else. If they were serious about improving the WR corps there are a couple of guys out there who actually have some ability and would be overall upgrades (to Foster, who should be on the PS). They seem fixated on a burner tho - Brown, Coleman, Foster - but I don't see anyone like that out there who can play, except Brice Butler, who should be a target but maybe not because of the process thingy i.e. outspoken with a prickly personality. -

Peterman pros and cons...
starrymessenger replied to ChicagoRic's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Ive thought about this (not that it means much). So far my impression is that Kirk has a stronger arm. If I'm wrong then it certainly bodes well (or at least better than I expected) for NP. -
Clearly the risk with Peterman is that he will be a turnover machine against a good starting defence that can bring pressure. His tendency to try to do more than he is capable of doing, a deadly combo of rookie arrogance and physical limitations (but mostly excessive self-assurance IMO), would account for this. He's clearly gotten better though and I'm hoping that he has learned a valuable lesson about playing more within himself, taking what the D is giving you, throwing the ball away and taking a sack when necessary. My view is that Allen's game evidences a similar problem. Though his physical ability is just about in a class by itself, one of the hallmarks of his college game is playing "hero ball", or, as I would rather say, trying to do more than even he can do. I'm not into conspiracy theories but whether it was intended or not (and I assume not) I think the Bengals game will be valuable experience. But I don't think he's there yet. I think Peterman may have learned something similar in LA last year and I suspect he's further along the learning curve. I think NP may develop into a good NFL QB, though of course there are no guarantees. I for one don't think he's Jeff Tuel. Terry Bradshaw said he thought Joe Montana was the GOAT. He also said Joe Montana couldn't throw a 15 yard out. I think NP gets the start against the Ravens and I think he will surprise his detractors in a good way. I don't think you will see the same guy you saw in LA last year. Im actually quite pleased with the Bills at the all important position (for a team that's a work in progress). They have a phenomenal prospect and another guy who may prove to be a lot better than people give him credit for.

Don't really understand all the bad humour surrounding the QB controversy (such as it is). I take a step back and what I see is more ability, more talent and more promise at the position than the Bills have had in a very long time - regardless of who gets the start vs the Ravens (which should be Nate IMO). -
Peterman Cumulative Preseason Stats

Ok fair enuf, so Chad is the one example of a good NFL QB with maybe less than NFL adequate arm strength. Fact remains, two of the greatest ever QBs had only adequate arm strength. Nothing special. As well as other successful QBs. Peterman's arm strength looks to me to be adequate. Nothing more nothing less. -

I agree. It looks to me like his arm is (not great but) NFL adequate - like Joe Montana, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning (2012-2014), Chad Pennington etc... adequate. If he fails lack of arm strength will not be the reason IMO. At the max of his range I think he can throw the ball 40-50 yards downfield if he has to. How many passes in a game travel more than 45 yards. Pre and post snap reads, the timing of throws, accuracy etc... are all more important. I think he will probably go as far as his smarts take him, which might be a long way. -

True enuf 26 but just maybe he can. Now he will get his chance to show just what he can do - and with ample preparation there should be no excuses. Of course we should probably also take into consideration that he won't be behind a solid offensive line throwing 10 yard crossing patterns to the likes of Rice and Taylor who then take it 90 yards to the house. -
peterman will start, always the plan
starrymessenger replied to The Final Word's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
JMO but it seems pretty obvious that NP will start vs the Ravens. He's clearly been the best of the three QBs this preseason and gives the team the best chance of winning. I don't know when the announcement will be made, maybe the Bills want to keep the opposition guessing, but Peterman should be getting the great majority of first team reps from here on in. -
Every Josh Allen snap in Bengals Preseason Game 3

Not cutting Vlad any slack because he doesn't deserve it, but Geno Atkins has one of the best bull rush moves in the game. That's why he gets around ten sacks a year as an interior defensive lineman. Such an excellent player. Im not so sure. -
Vontae Davis is a problem....

Kinda black humour but I chuckled seeing Ross run circles around two Bills defenders falling all over themselves. Was like the greased pig thing they do at state fairs. Wont be funny if it continues tho. -

He's done the same sort of things in season - punting when the score, clock and field position strongly suggest otherwise. It's what he does. -
Every Josh Allen snap in Bengals Preseason Game 3
starrymessenger replied to cd1's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
True. Quite a few head coaches, even some good ones, are terrible at in game management. I've not been impressed with Shawn in that regard for some time. Allen and the offence needed a lift and a little momentum. Shawn let him down. Also punted once on a fourth and short down around the Bungles 40 yard line. Earned him all of 20 net yards of irrelevant field position. It's preseason and he takes the ball out of the kid's hands. Asinine. Regarding Josh, Yes the line was awful but there were also three or four downs where he could have and should have gotten rid of the ball sooner. He said so himself post game. He looked yesterday a whole lot like he did at times (not the good times) at WYO. JMO but he has more work to do before he's ready to start. -
What Peterman needs to do (amongst other things) is make opposing Ds respect his ability to beat them over the top (as ridiculous as that may sound to some). If he can do that his short passing game (and the Bills run game) will be that much more effective. Of course he will never be able to challenge them in parts of the field that a guy with an arm like Allen can but the TD throw to Streater that was called back travelled 40 yards in the air and was perfectly placed. Streater did not even have to push off to beat the corner, the timing and ball placement was so good. I think his useful range is probably around 50 yards. If he can be very accurate with it that should be good enuf, and he is said to have "long ball" accuracy. It cannot be a staple of his game for a obvious reasons but he doesn't need to do it except occasionally, for example when Ds are playing 100% underneath. He wouldn't be throwing ropes either but if he gets rid of it quickly his receivers can run under it. If he can't do it there's a chance, perhaps even a likelihood, that his game eventually gets snuffed out. Conversely if he can do it his game, and the Bills O, should be elevated to a significant extent. Allen should not be starting now IMO. Maybe later towards the end of the year against weaker opposition if the other guys aren't getting the job done. Andy Reid is said to know QBs. He sat McNabb for most of his rookie year and kept Mahomes off the field in 2017. It's not a universal rule by any means but I think it sometimes makes sense to acclimate these talented prospects gradually, depending on just how raw they are and how good the team around them is. Allen is a raw talent. The Bills don't have many proven, reliable playmakers around him and the line is lousy in pass pro. And Daboll doesn't seem to me to be a ground chuck kinda guy.

Peterman Cumulative Preseason Stats
starrymessenger replied to The Bills Blog's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Peterman looks to have the smarts for playing the position. He gets the ball out quick and is generally accurate with it. He obviously has trouble with the quick out but I think he can make that throw well enough to his left. All the picks and near picks have been to his right, and that's a more difficult throw for a right handed QB. It would be nice if he could improve on that. Maybe he can, maybe he can't. Hes had a strong preseason and looks to have settled down after his rough rookie year. He is showing great composure for a second year QB with almost no in season experience. Thing is we still need to see how he performs when the games count. There will be a significant step up in game speed and complexity in the defences over anything he's seen so far in preseason. So the jury is still very much out IMO. If he continues to play at this level as the Bills navigate a very difficult schedule, and especially after DCs have had a chance to game plan for him, he will be laying a claim to be considered a potentially starting calibre QB. Josh Allen should not be starting against the teams at the front end of the Bills schedule behind that line. -
I like Rosen too. A lot. We talk about Allen's high ceiling. I think Rosen will get better too. I think the 5 guys taken in the first all could transition as solid starters. I think it was a very good class. IMO when he's on his game Allen is doing more and doing better than any of the other really good prospects.
