We May Need to Resign Ourselves to Allen at 5
starrymessenger replied to Midwest1981's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Don't quite agree with the Ben comparisons (except for size/weight). If he reaches his potential he looks more like Elway to me. And if he is on the board at #5 I think Elway will draft him. Denver has a good 2 year bridge QB and I don't think Paxton Lynch is the guy. -

I think if Darnold played in the Mountain West on that Wyoming team working that offensive scheme behind that O-line with those receivers and running game he'd look very similar to Josh Allen. -

I don't worry about Allen at 5 because I think Elway would draft and develop him. -
Down to Allen or Mayfield at 1

Jackson he's my #2 after Rosen. -
Baker Mayfield big news?
starrymessenger replied to JerseyBills's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If there is any truth to the rumour that the Bills offered 12, 22 and next year's first, then, good as Barkely is, I can't see the Giants passing that deal up to draft a running back, especially in a draft that is already deep at the position. You only do that if you are looking to draft Eli's successor. Of course maybe Beane never actually made that offer. -
Mayfield to the Jets or just smoke?
starrymessenger replied to ProcessYaDigg's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Interesting feedback from Jets message board given all the Baker to the Jets hype. Although Mayfield has his vociferous supporters as far as the posts are concerned, in a poll I think it was 73% of fans preferred Rosen. That might align with responses on this and other team boards. It's only the fans opinion tho. -
I'm starting to think the QB Class is Overhyped
starrymessenger replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Maybe not 1983 but it looks like a good and a very deep QB class. There are at least a couple of second tier guys who could make it, at least as solid backups - White, Lauletta, Ferguson- and maybe even develop into starters. Top 5 all going round 1. -
Plenty of good tape, but it may be misleading. In assessing risk people are forgetting that there is a significant possibility that he is a scheme baby whose skills will not translate to the NFL as a long term starter. It's easy to see the risks associated with Allen. It's easy to overlook the risks with Mayfield. All of these guys are risky picks, but for different reasons.

Why all the hate for Josh Allen?

Greg Cosell Breaks Down Baker Mayfield

From the tape, analyst podcasts and the other usual sources my impression is that Jackson has often demonstrated good field vision, the ability to go thru his progressions, throw with anticipation and at least show an understanding of and a sensitivity to the importance of ball placement (though he does not always execute accordingly). Idk if he came across as dumb before the whiteboard and how that may have struck evaluators. I heard the same report tho. My sense of it is that he may very well have all the "football" smarts you need to develop as a NFL QB. Im sure I'm wrong a lot when it comes to this arcane science but he looks like a terrific prospect to me. But one might expect the Bills to prefer the finished product ie Rosen rather than gambling on Lamar getting there. JRs at the top of my list. -

Your welcome. For what it's worth (probably not much) I don't think Jackson is out of the discussion as a pocket passer and therefore someone who might interest Beane. Right now the only throw he makes on a consistently accurate basis is the inside slant. He can make all other required throws but his accuracy is inconsistent, especially on out patterns. Some analysts are of the view that his flaws re lower body mechanics are very correctable. Beane's moves can be interpreted as a gigantic Lamar smokescreen ie don't bring him in, move to 12 to leap frog Zona, feign interest in moving up etc...but obviously that's a real stretch. I actually think they may be more intrigued with Allen than with Lamar. -
Rosen or Darnold? Who's your pick?
starrymessenger replied to ColdFront_USAF's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Rosen but I think the Bills would be happy with either him or Darnold. Both guys project as bona fide starters with "franchise" ceilings. Allen's ceiling is "elite" but the odds are against his ever getting there. Having said that, if Allen drops to 12, which may be unlikely, I would not be stunned if Beane drafted him. He's not much of a fan favourite but I think much of the hype is a genuine reflection of how at least some pro evaluators see him as a prospect. -
Yeah and this is why I think a Lamar smokescreen is still a possibility (though remote). Like Cam he has given indications that he can learn to execute from the pocket. He has shown improvement year over year. And if he is to develop as a pocket passer he would be better off doing that behind AJ rather than Tyrod.
-
Yeah, to me Allen and Jackson have the highest ceiling from amongst this year's QB class. They are both through the roof. All depends on your drafting philosophy. Do you hedge your bets or do you have the stones to swing for the fences knowing that you could be out of a job in two or three years (if you are GM). As between the two, Allen has the advantage of size and arm strength. I would be fine with either one at 12, but I don't see (absent a smokescreen) any interest in Lamar at OBD. I think they could take Allen though (except he will likely be off the board by then.

Greg Cosell Breaks Down Baker Mayfield

He is not a target IMO. If we were planning on installing a college system (or at best a customized hybrid combo of college and pro concepts) why get rid of Tyrod Taylor. If your franchise fancy is a dual threat QB not only is Taylor your best mentor but as we've seen you will get much better production from Tyrod too as he sets the table for Baker in a RPO offence. We know what happens when you try to force Tyrod into the classic pocket passer mould and that hardly seems to be the scheme suited to Mayfield either. But it suits Rosen or Darnold pretty well (and our current placeholder McCarron). Although it doesn't make a lot of sense to me personally, the Brown's overpaying for Taylor with the 65th pick suggests that they may indeed be swinging for the fences and taking Allen instead of Darnold. My sense of it is that Beane and the Bills want a traditional pocket passer, especially after seeing how they managed Cam in Carolina. -
Greg Cosell Breaks Down Baker Mayfield
starrymessenger replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I dont myself feel that it's a motivational issue. He's a great kid and I love his moxie. I'm worried about his being a scheme baby and therefore maybe so limited at the end of the day that you come away with the feeling that he was just another really good college QB. To be really good at the next level I think he needs to be more like Drew. Drew Brees is not a world class athlete, he's not big and he doesn't have more arm strength than Baker, but no one is more at home in and around an NFL pocket. I just don't know that Mayfield can be more like that guy. -

One issue I have with Baker is that although much of what we've seen from him is good that may be the best that we will ever see - in other words he may have maxed out. What you see is what you get. That's not bad but maybe we can do better. I'm not sure I see a lot of upside there, unlike some of the other QBs in this class. How exactly does he "develop"? Add to that the fact that his best looks may be scheme dependant and I'd think twice before drafting him at or near the top of the first. If I thought that he could learn to execute well from an NFL pocket, specifically patiently working longer developing routes (not just the quick hitters) while still seeing the passing lanes (including therefore going through true progressions rather than just coverage reads) I'd feel a lot better about him. Idk if he can do that. -
Why all the hate for Josh Allen?
starrymessenger replied to Buff76ers's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Running the offence he did, behind that O-line, with that running game and receivers I don't see how his stats can be compared with this year's big school prospects who benefited from at least some NFL calibre players at the so called skill positions not to mention better, and in some cases much better, O-lines, and working offensive schemes that were not only more QB friendly but specifically to some extent customized to emphasize their strengths and minimize their weaknesses. Apples and oranges as far as I'm concerned. So I don't focus on the 56% completion % and kick him to the curb (as some do). No one has done Josh Allen any favours. His draft value is without doubt first round IMO and he should go early. The bust potential is there to be sure, as it is for Sam Darnold, but they are both very good prospects. -
Making the case for Lamar Jackson

I would take Lamar ahead of Josh Allen or Baker. JMO. -
Why Jake Locker walked away from football.

Good friend of mine was once invited on a date by an incredibly hot girl we knew. He couldn't believe his luck! Thing is she took him to a Jews for Jesus convention. When he asked her why she did that she explained that he was the only Jew she knew. So I guess some Jews believe that Jesus is the Messiah (tho my friend isn't one of them). -
Well I agree that not all busts are created equal. I think I saw where Joe Marino predicted that both Darnold and Allen will bust, but I don't think he assigned probability factors. Given his conclusion maybe it really doesn't really matter. No doubt if Allen realizes his potential whoever picks him is going to look really smart. If he busts the more you sacrifice to get him the dumber you will seem to be. I like Allen but I would not push all my chips on that square. I'd move up for Darnold even if Rosen is my preferred pick.
