The only logical defense of the Dareus move is if Dareus was a huge problem in the locker room. On paper it looked like we got out from under one inflated DT contract to then get into another one. It's the opposite of the Whaley regime. McBeane is good at drafting but so far his pro-personnel decisions have been pretty bad, whereas with Whaley it was literally the exact opposite. McBeane's best free agency decision be a kicker. I know they have been pretty cap strapped the past two off-seasons but with the limited moves they have made its been more bad decisions than good ones at least so far.

It couldn't get much worse. Might as well see what Wyatt has over a guy like Miller.

It seemed more aggressive and the coverage seemed tighter. I liked it as it looked a lot better. Hopefully McD will be more influential in the defense going forward. I think Tampa 2 only works when you have insane defensive talent which makes almost any system work.

I think it is possible Allen's footwork can improve with experience as I think the game will slow down for him as he starts more.

Genuine question how does McD's defense differ? Weren't we running a Tampa 2 system last year? Is McD's more aggressive? If McD's calling the plays then aren't those plays from our existing defensive playbook?

Probably thought Gaines was going to get super paid more so than what he was. I didn't hate the Vonta signing, but once the market on Gaines cooled they should have been more aggressive in signing him.

Not necessarily, if McD feels like he comes up with good game plans and prepare the team well he will be a part of this team. There is more to D-Coordinators than the play calling. That being said I would rather McD keep calling the plays, defense looked much better in the second half. Isn't that the same kind of defense Carolina and McD ran? Seems like Frasier was hired to implement McD's system.

Footwork and decision making are the two main components of what drove his inaccuracy. The decision making will improve with experience hopefully (it should and Allen is a smart hard working guy, no reason to believe it won't) but the footwork is where it becomes interesting. Allen seemed to be improving in that regard in camp and in pre-season. But he is under duress a lot and in a different environment now in the regular season and while it still seems he has improved from college we aren't seeing quite the same progression he showed in camp and pre-season. I think the pressure is impacting that but as other posters pointed out he had some inaccurate throws on plays when he wasn't pressured. I think the whole intense experience of starting against good defenses for the first time is impacting him a bit. My hope is that as he just plays more he is able to process the game better and he starts to show more progression in his footwork. I also hope that the defense and the talent around him improve so that he isn't playing from behind and trying to do too much.

I would have still held onto AJ, I think AJ would have been a competent game manager that maybe could have gotten them through the rough first half of the schedule. I was never fooled by NP, he did the exact same **** last year and stunk it up. NP is flat out unplayable and will not be on an NFL roster next year. AJ I thought could have at least been a decent QB. Allen is baptism by fire for better or worse. I do think they should find a vet backup just in case. I don't ever want to see NP play, he is just one injury away from playing and that's embarrassing.

That's the big concern, I would have to see the advanced stats and the All-22 analysis on Star to see if he was doing his job or was it the guys behind him or next to him or if Star just sucked. The defense got abused in the first half but overall played well in the second. It wasn't just the Chargers trying to run out the clock either after that first TD it was only a 2 score game the Chargers on got that put away field goal after a pick that put them in field goal range. The team is clearly a work in progress and but Star's lack of perceived impact is highly concerning at least now just after watching this game briefly.

I know, I am just playing devils advocate with Tyrod (pointing out that you can skew and frame things in whichever way you want to.) I thought the team should have kept him for one more year but the return on him was pretty good so I understood the move. I was more so mad they traded AJ and fell for NP again. But I thought Tyrod was the perfect competent QB to have for one more year (he is gone at this point no use in dragging it up what's done is done I just think that Allen shouldn't be compared to Tyrod because they are completely different QB's and Tyrod's situation in Buffalo was different than Allen's now. The stats don't tell the whole story on either player and I think the comparisons should stop.

Tyrod also won a lot games and added rushing yards and didn't make a lot of turnovers. You can lawyer it in either direction and fit the stats to your arguments. Tyrod is gone for better or worse, Allen is and should be the future.

Allen played like a rookie, lots to work on but you see the pockets of potential that he has and a lot of his mistakes seem to stem from inexperience more so than tragic flaws in his game. Decision making will only improve as he plays more, he will throw a lot of picks and take a lot of sacks (both a product of his inexperience and his O-line) but he will also improve as the season goes as experience will be his best teacher. I still wish the team had a decent vet QB to throw out there instead of him (experience is a great teacher but I worry his footwork will be negatively impacted by playing behind such a bad O-line and I think rookies are best suited to sit a year at least) but throwing Allen to get experience is not a bad option at this point.

The offense seemed to get going in the second half, even factoring out the garbage time the team just played a lot better in the second half.

Honestly this game isn't as big of a negative as it seemed like it was going to be in the first half. I think the second half is big for this team psyche. Allen's picks cost them the chance to do anything even remotely competitive (esp that first INT where had they gotten it and the PAT they would have only been down 8 with a ton of time left) but Allen got the garbage time TD which should only help grow his confidence and his teammates confidence. The defense played well in the second half which should build their confidence and allow the coach to try and reproduce that style of play more frequently. The only score they allowed was off a pick that put the opposing offense deep into their territory. The offense didn't look hot but they got some sense of momentum in the second half scoring early in the half to bring the game to some sort of sense of competitiveness and driving deep into the Chargers territory when it was a 2 score game. This is still going to be a bad season but at least there look to be some positives emerging from it.

Mahomes is in the right position to be successful. I was happy the Bills traded down in 2017 as I wasn't a fan of his. But the Chiefs sat him for a year behind a good QB, the Chiefs have a above average O-line and surrounded Mahomes with great weapons (Top 2 tight end, very good RB, and two legit receivers.) Andy Reid also makes QB's look much better than they are in general. Overall I think the Chiefs did it exactly right with Mahomes, The Bills on the other hand should have kept Tyrod for one more year, as much as the return for Tyrod was solid he would have been a perfect "Bridge" QB to keep Allen from baptism from fire. I wouldn't call Mahomes the second coming just yet (It's two games against less than stellar defenses) but the returns on him are looking more than promising. I do not think the Bills would have been in the same position to build around Mahomes so he certainly wouldn't be the same player with us.

Better to bring him along more slowly for the Browns long term.

It's McD's fault for giving any time and resources to Peterman. Why the !@#$ would you have viewed that player as anything other than a 3rd string player is beyond me.

I just don't think this team would trade Kyle for a 7th round pick. I also think that at Kyle's current salary and given the other younger players a team could trade a late round pick for at DT teams aren't going to be knocking down the door for an older rental player when they can find better options elsewhere. It's not to say Kyle isn't productive but rather would there be a market to rent a veteran DT who maybe is above average but once again IF The team is 0-6 odds are there aren't too many players having good seasons. Dareus was on a bigger contract but Dareus was much younger and still anchoring the run defense of the team. The Jags were a poor run defending team despite their pass rush and amazing secondary. The Bills also took on a good cap hit trading Dareus while the Jags only really had to deal with dead money for this season, IF Dareus was an issue for them they could cut him in 2019 with no cap hit. It was only the Bills who would have had a cap hit cutting him in 2019 had he stayed. Overall you can't compare the two players because the scenarios are different if the Bills are an 0-6 team.

I was more so approaching it from a hypothetical scenario of the team being 0-6. If that's the case (and that's a big IF) then the team has to consider trading a piece for a future asset. Right now at Game 2 we are far from the team being 0-6. Dareus was still viewed as a productive player on a 5-2 team. I know everyone around here was shitting on him because he was not living up to his huge contract but he was anchoring the run defense and still by far the best interior D-line player on the team. The Jags gave up a 5th and were desperate for run defense help. Odds are if the team is 0-6 none of those players will not be having good seasons or be performing any type of specialty skill that a team might need. I just don't see those big contract players netting a pick for the Bills.

Outside of Shady there isn't any other player on the roster I could see another team wanting to give up a draft pick for. Clay and Hughes are on huge contracts and not the most productive. Lorax and Kyle aren't productive enough to warrant a team trading for them. I just don't see any other veteran players on big contracts that other teams would want besides Shady. That being said if this team is 0-6 and there is a 3rd round pick on the table for Shady I would consider it.

Yup its embarrassing, esp considering that Peterman did the exact same thing last year and a lot of suckers on this board fell for it. Peterman looked like a world beater in last years pre-season to the point where so many were clamoring for Tyrod to be benched before the season started. I would routinely make arguments that Tyrod was as good a bridge QB as the Bills could possibly get for Allen who would have zero pressure going into year 1 if a vet like Tyrod was anchoring the spot. But people were so against Tyrod on essentially a one year deal because they were so confident that any QB off the street was better than Tyrod. Now granted the Bills got a decent return for Tyrod on the final year of a contract and AJ McCaron could have been a decent game manager. So while I wouldn't have done the move I at least saw the effort to put into place a competent QB option in front of whichever QB we drafted. Instead they shipped AJ off for a 5th and banked on !@#$ing Peterman because he looked good in pre-season again.

I think the possibility of a spot foul is necessary, if it was a 15 yard penalty defenders would do a lot more intentional fouling on big throws down the field if they know they got beat. Overall I would like to see more digression given to the refs to call it a 15 yard or spot foul penalty given the nature of the play.
