An 88-year-old Maryland man with a long history of ties to white supremacist groups is the suspect in Wednesday's fatal shooting at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, two law enforcement officials told CNN.

James W. von Brunn served six years in prison for trying to make what he called a "legal, non-violent citizens arrest" of Federal Reserve Board members in 1981 -- a prison term he blamed on "a Negro jury, Jew/Negro attorneys" and "a Jew judge," he said on his Web site, Holy Western Empire.

"He is in our files going back way into the 1980s," said Heidi Beirich, a researcher for the Southern Poverty Law Center, based in Montgomery, Alabama. "He has an extremely long history with neo-Nazis and white supremacists. He's written extremely incendiary publications, raging about Jews, blacks and the like."

Shooter is reported to be an 89 year old anti-government/white supremacist.

Thank you to all the right wing wackos like Rush and Palin for stirring the pot with their anti-government fear mongering speeches that are taken to heart by weak minded people like this and the anti-abortion shooter.

I'm feeling left out, so i just wanted to take this time to let you know that you, sir, are a !@#$ing idiot for this post.

The voices in this whacko's head were certainly much louder than anyone on the radio.

I read in the morning n'paper that the perp used a .22.

Recognizing the current popularity among criminals for a 9mm pistol, I'd hazard a guess that the .22 has killed more through history (other that in war) than any other cartridge.

Not assault rifles, the favorite bogyman of the left.

Funny - before 1968, when the federal gun control act was passed (often referred to as GCA68) firearms were much more available. I still own a Sears .410 bolt-action shotgun purchased through the mail. You could buy ammo at Mom 'n Pops and drugstores.

Society has changed for the worse since the Left won the cultural war in the '60's.

Its probably because cincy remembers when men were men and fought with swords and shields, and then the damn kids came along with their new fangled "thundersticks" and really ruined the neighborhood.

Increase in public debt is the right way to look at it because of spending gimmicks (which, btw, also reveals that the budget was not balanced by the end of the Clinton administration, though it came closer than at any other time.).

Here are the annotated increases in public debt:

1997 $189 billion

1998 $113 billion

1999 $130 billion

2000 $18 billion

2001 $133 billion <- Dot-Com burst and potential recession

2002 $421 billion <vvv- Spending on homeland/GWOT/Afghanistan and to shore up markets post-9/11

2003 $555 billion <vvv- Bush Tax Cuts

2004 $596 billion <vvv- Iraq spending

2005 $553 billion

2006 $574 billion

2007 $501 billion

2008 $1,017 billion <--- includes one-time creation of $700 billion TARP fund

2009 $1,358 billion <--- as of June 2.

Note: total Iraq spending is about $600 billion.

So the one-time creation of the $700 billion TARP fund came under Bush's watch?

If you don't think that mentally deranged people with an existing hatred of minorities and the gov't can't and don't take those statements out of context and see them as a call to arms, you are delusional. Rush and his ilk are not legally responsible for any actions, but they have a moral responsibility to not recklessly throw around wrong and misleading statements that will incite others who take their words verbatim.

Flame away if you can't handle the truth, but words matter.

Then I guess what we need to ask ourselves is why, with Rush Limbaugh on the air since the early 80's, has it taken the mentally deranged 25 years to catch up with what he has been nudging them to do, which is to shoot guards at holocaust museums?

I've known paranoid schizophrenics with more compelling causal connections than this drivel.

But when you include Palin's urging, it's only been a year.

Even though what she said had nothing to do with minorities.

It's all Bushs fault. Afterall, I am sure this was plotted before he left office and no way Obama would have let this happen if he was in charge.

Realistically, Rush didn't start becoming a syndicated star until the early '90s, so it would be interesting having Pasta explain von Brunn's '83 conviction.

I think an important quality in humans is to be able to admit when they're wrong, and I have to admit right now that I was wrong. I was convinced there was no way possible that anyone could ever make Conner and OwensMania seem like voices of reason. Congratulations. You've proven me wrong.

At this pace, you may be able to unseat Bad Lieutenant before the year is up.

As I recall there was some tough competition to get Jodi Foster's attention back then.
