In-A-Gadda-Levitre Posted March 23, 2009 Share Posted March 23, 2009 Bills needs: Tight-end, pass-rush playmakers wanted The listed starter at tight end for the Bills is Derek Fine, who doesn't exactly remind people of Antonio Gates. He had 10 catches as a rookie last season. Derek Schouman is more of an H-back type. The Bills have needs on defense that might supersede the choice to take a tight end -- especially in importance. A couple of guys from last year's class started playing well by the end of the year (Carlson & Keller), but I wouldn't hold my breath on getting immediate production from a rookie TE. Endless Ike Posted March 23, 2009 Share Posted March 23, 2009 If you look at a lot of the TEs who have produced in the last few years, one of the thing that really stands out is the lack of a viable WR option on the team Gonzo in his best years was the number one guy with not much for secondary targets, same with Heap, and even Gates (although that may be changing as they've got some decent receivers recently). If you've got really good receivers, you don't need a dominant TE. tennesseeboy Posted March 23, 2009 Share Posted March 23, 2009 Our biggest problem is pass protection. Our downfall was TE getting a concussion and getting rushed through the remainder of the season. NOTHING else is even close. A far second is pass rush. We do not put enough pressure on the qb. This should be addressed before addressing anything else. I see a Defensive lineman in round 1 and an offensive guard or possibly a center at 2 and a gaurd at 3. I think the rest of free agency should be addressed to clear up these two problem areas. TE is a luxury compared to our need positions - both lines and LB's - and there's plenty of talent in those positions at #11. Does anyone remember that sure fire, can't miss TE the 49'ers chose last year? Vernon Davis! He's not exactly lighting it up, heck the Jets' Keller had a better 1st yr. Now Davis may end up being good or even great but my point is the payoff will not be in the 1st year (see James Hardy). We need linemen or LBs Cushing or Mauluga (sp?) from USC. We could trade a second day pick for Scheffler and sign a LG and an OLB and have very little to worry about. I will say, though, now that we're getting closer to the salary cap, that trading up for a top 10 pick (i.e. Orakpo) seems even less likely than it did before. Unless the hole filling you are referring to is a shovel full of dirt in a truck-sized hole. Back to the OP - I do not agree TE is a top priority right now. Maybe he forgot about what a pass rush did to Tom Brady in his last full length game. Just slipped his mind I guess. These national guys are clueless. That should be determined by the depth at each position of need, The availability of free agents and the overall quality ranking of players regardless of position.
