Canisius HS has the best player in New York state

phil mcconkey came out of Canisius as well.  I remember missing a tackle on him that went for six as I recall.....

Many years ago ohio state recruited doug worthington out of st francis. The story was that our HC at the time, Jim Tressel, was college roommates with ilios dipaolos son. He would come to buffalo sometimes and ended up at a couple st francis games. There was also a kicker from canisius that came to osu a few years ago. I cant remember his name but he was the #1 HS kicker in the country at the time. Paul woods out of canisius was highly recruited but I believe ended up at Rutgers

I feel like that’s the story more and more with kids in states that don’t have spring football. The south and west coast just dominate recruiting. Even the freshman RB Bo Jackson that we have now at OSU; he’s from Cleveland and that was actually surprising. Most of our skill players are from Texas, Florida, Cali

Current JR at Canisius HS... A 4 star top 15 ranked running back nationally with offers from Ohio State and Michigan and Georgia and basically everybody 

 

Been watching in the last 3 years and this kid is showing that big time players can come out of Western New York without transferring to a ohio or Pennsylvania school

Was at tapestry charter in the city before canisius... He was already a star in the making before his freshman year at canisius 

 

He could have went to any private school in the area or left the state but he wanted to stay home and build a legacy

 

And canisius has a track record of getting kids to FBS schools recently

716, even though i grew up in Hamburg, mydad used to be as a side job the House Manager of the K of C, mygrandma lived in the front of my Uncle Opthamology office, my mom worked for my uncle, my brother lived in Lack, so i basically grew up around Lackawanna.

 

Whenever I drove past that stadium i always thought whatan ungrateful SOB Jaworsky was for not taking the time to come back for Homecoming.  I couldnt stand listening to him on ESPN before he was canned.

 

Be proud of where you came from.  Living in Philly is fine, but don’t forget you're roots.

Puts me in mind of a story I read.

 

Mertz had made the college football team all four years, but never played.  In the final home game of senior year, he packed the stadium with friends and relatives, and gave them the order to start a chant, "We want Mertz!", in order to sway the coach.  The chant began right after halftime, and gradually grew until even strangers and fans from the opposite side joined in.  Finally in the fourth quarter, the coach looked down the bench, and gestured for Mertz to attend.

Yes, that Tressel story with Dennis Dipaolo is true. Ironically (humble brag) we ended up at a party with Dennis & Jim Kelly outside of the stadium prior to the OSU/Miami National Championship. My dad knew him some through a mutual friend. He was wearing a Tressel Baldwin Wallace shirt. Kelly was head to toe in Canes gear.

Some other notables:

 

JC Tretter (C/Batavia)  who served as the player president of the NFLPA and then as the Chief Strategy Officer. Played in the NFL for 8 years. He resigned amid allegations he buried results from injury reports and concussion data although he denied it.

 

Corey Graham(DB/Buffalo) who won 2 SBs with Baltimore and Philadelphia. Went to Turner/Carroll HS which is now closed.

 

Jim Dombrowski (G/Williamsville) who is the highest drafted WNY player ever, taken 6th by the Saints in 1986. Played 11 years and is in the College Football HOF as well as the Saints HOF.

 

Brett Kern(P/Grand Island) 3x Pro Bowl punter mostly for the Titans.

 

Shane Conlan(LB/Carroll) is from Carroll, NY in Chataqua County and played for Frewsburg HS. Had no idea he was a local product.

 

James "Boobie" Starks(RB/NF) played for the Packers and won a Super Bowl
