3 UP 3 DOWN (week 5)

Losses like this its so hard to do the 3 UP I am searching here... interested in your thoughts... here goes

 

UP

 

Kincaid - really started to see him featured... nice to see him getting open and catching the ball at one point I felt like he was the only real option. 

 

Prater -  remaining consistent, doing his job, I do not have the Bass "yips" before his kicks... (knock on wood) but he was one of the few who really did their job yesterday.

 

Deone Walker - another half sack, fingers crossed we have a very good starter in him as time goes on, not perfect, but i see the progress here... glad we picked him

 

DOWN - (where to start) 

 

Coaching - Not sure you can start anywhere else, this team in my eyes was ill prepared to play, showed difficulty all day simply lining up and executing a snap from center. I do not feel Brady had a great plan for these guys (and if I am wrong, our offense has some problems) struggled all game to get in a rhythm. Babich again is out of his league, his defensive angles are poor, tackling is absolutely inept, coverage schemes look like fire drills, continues to be a weekly liability for this team... McD presides over it all and deserves the blame for this team being ill prepared. 

 

Tre -  Sorry Tre, luv you man, but you literally cant cover or at least if you can didnt show it yesterday... Father time is the only undefeated player in the league... 

 

OL - hate to group them all but the bottom line was no runs over 9 yards for cook, allen was running all day, and lots of penalties... lots... 

 

 

Players of note

 

Allen - not gonna put him on the down side... but he doesnt get the up side either... Josh needs a cape or this team has a good shot at losing WR are average, Defense is a liability. Josh wore pedestrian clothes yesterday and was unable to make up for the Coaching, OL, and Defense... 

 

Rousseau - nice start for him... where was he the rest of the game

 

Bishop/Rapp -  literally we need to think about activating Poyer (*ducking*) LOL 

 

Lastly, credit to New England whose players get paid too... they play a very good game, made it ugly , won the turnover battle and beat a team at home that on paper is better... maybe...

OL gave Josh Allen all day to throw.  No one gets open.  The run game wasn’t ideal, but the Pats are built to stop the run and we simply don’t have a counter when when our outside WR’s get locked man up and the Defense can drop the rest into zone coverage with only Shakir and Kincaid as reliable targets.

They did better in the second half, he ran for his life in the 1st, but to your point, WR is an issue I believe.  Getting open...

O line was not an issue at all. Patriots have one of the best run ds in the league.

Another poster said that... I saw the pass rush in the first half as poor better in the second... maybe I need to go back and watch and rethink that...

All day to throw? Did you watch a different game? Pats front 4 were getting pressure especially Williamson and Baremore the reason it looked good is Allen was able out run them and make plays on the run.  But the Pats have been getting pressure on the QBs all year that’s an area they really improved on. (I don’t take the Panthers game to seriously since that was over early)

Up:

3rd down and rush defense. 

   -Pats held to just 3/9 on third downs and only had 71 yards rushing on 22 attempts. And that's with Maye being a mobile QB which has given us fits this year

 

Pass rush.

    -Recorded 4 sacks and could have been more if not for Maye making some good plays.

 

Dalton Kincaid.

It's amazing seeing him play healthy this year as opposed to last year playing hurt.

 

Honorable Mention: AJE

AJ gets a lot of heat on this board (and some is deserving) but he balled out last night. 

 

Down:

Tre White/Taylor Rapp

Not sure how much lower these two can go, but they seem to go further down each week. Neither are starting caliber, and White is lucky to be rostered IMO.

 

Presnap discipline.

This is two weeks in a row where the offense puts us in a hole to start with mental mistakes.

 

Joe Brady.

Just some terrible play calls last night. Trying to be too cute with some of the plays. 

 

YO-YO OF THE WEEK

KEON COLEMAN.

 

This seems to sum up his career so far. He will make som nice plays (that 3rd down grab where he out muscled the defender for instance) and show flashes. But then he will have a key drop or do something else dumb. The fumble last night was a huge play.

I thought it was really good. My whole section was SCREAMING for guys to get open. Josh was getting to like his 4th and 5th read. That’s what made it especially frustrating to me. It isn’t like he was forced to just let it go quickly. The tape will not be kind to the WRs.

Josh had Coleman/Palmer vs Gonzalez/Davis. 
 

That was the difference.

Against NE, Josh scrambled 7 times on designed passing plays and sacked once.  That's about 20% of his drop-backs resulting in a sack or scramble.  Last week was about the same rate of sacks/scrambles versus NO.

Pre-Amari last season, Josh was sacked 6 times in 5 games, but only 8 more times in the following 12 games.  This year, he's been sacked 8 times in 5 games.    

 

Maddening that a relatively easy observation from the beginning of last off-season is being repeated all over again.  And of course, that he's getting hit more.  Some of the negative externalities of not investing in better receivers.

When the run game is struggling it puts pressure and the spotlight on our WR corps.  Work to be done unfortunately.

We need to get Tre out of the lineup.. and honestly maybe off this team.  The Poyer role is where he should be sadly.  He just can’t play anymore.  
 

But an issue that’s not fun to talk about once we get that situation resolved is how Taron looks on his last legs and newly paid Benford has simply been… mediocre.
