As far as him being signed because our DT depth sucked. #1 are we 100% sure he makes the roster #2 that DT depth included Jordan Phillips, who we are bringing back presumably because he has something to add to DT depth The timeline matters here, as well. If you go back to March when O Gun was signed, we then had only Oliver Jones and Carter on the roster. Beane has since stated that once they learned about the suspension, the FA DT market had essentially dried up for what they were looking for. This lead them to the renegotiation of the deal. There was also no way to forecast that they’ve be drafting two defensive tackles a month later. So although Larry might have been in the initial re-tooling plans, I think the suspension moved him to more of an insurance role. Now that we’ve restocked in the draft with what appears to be reliable youth, they can shelf O gun for weeks and have him available as a “pull here in case of emergency” whether that be injuries or performance. The 3.5 guarenteed is a sunken cost, and I think Beane may have seen it as a bit of insurance heading into the draft and offseason to make sure they aren’t bone dry come January relying on the likes of Eli Ankou and Zion Logue when it matters most. Clearly, if things had progressed to the point of him flying to Buffalo to sign an agreement, we’d already done a bunch of due diligence on guys and felt good about him. At that point, what were we supposed to do? I’d argue Beane made the best of a bad situation. Getting two good DT prospects in the draft further insulated us against really bad outcomes. Signing Phillips even further helps. I don’t know if you’re aware but we didn’t exactly have tons of cap and Aaron Donald wasn’t coming out of retirement to play with us. Fans can whine and complain all they want but how we handled our DT depth/future this off season was prudent even if a little unlucky. Edited August 26 by VW82 Quote

Well when Larry O is on the books for the next 3 seasons, I don’t want to hear complaining that there’s no cap space. We make our choices to roll 5 deep at DT and have to live with them. Quote

Even when I saw what was posted, I still couldn't wrap my head around it. It just made zero sense to roster a 33 year old Jordan Phillips, who spent all off-season on the couch. Bad look for Ryan Talbot to specifically make a point of saying the signing was 'to the Bills 53 man roster, NOT the practice squad". At least he realizes it was a dumb move to run with that before he got the full details. Edited August 26 by BillsFanForever19 1 Quote
BobbyC81 Posted August 26 Posted August 26 Are we sure this is the same Jordan Phillips and not the one that was drafted by Miami in the 5th round of this year’s draft? Many people don’t do any research and make wrong assumptions. I saw where people assumed that Lonnie Johnson Jr was the son of the Bills former tight end but in fact he is not. If this is really our lovable retread, I believe he would only be signed to fill in while our 2 new veteran defensive linemen serve their 6 game suspensions. But, what do I know? 🤪 Quote

But to the same degree he can't then give us a sob story about how hard it is putting pieces around Josh or having something resembling NFL level safety play "when you are paying your quarterback"..... it's all choices. Brandon makes his. We will have to live and die by them. EDIT: although just to be clear he won't actually be on the books for the next three seasons. Once his contract voids after 2025 the money accelerates into 2026. He actually counts $2.5m dead cap next year and then is clear thereafter. But your principle point stands. So many bad contracts signed, it’s insane, but Beane is a God and don’t you dare say otherwise or you will be burned at the preverbal stake here. Edited August 26 by DCofNC 1 Quote

I mean he got that 2022 draft pretty right even despite whiffing on his first rounder.... without that 2022 class his seat would be very, very hot right now. If the 2023 class and the 2024 class don't look better by the end of this season than they do right now then his end of season presser will be interesting. 1 Quote
