B-Man Posted August 14 Posted August 14 This year's Kennedy Center honorees are country singer and Grammy Award-winner George Strait; Broadway actor and singer Michael Crawford, known for originating the lead role in The Phantom of the Opera; the actor Sylvester Stallone, star of the Rocky and Rambo movies; disco singer Gloria Gaynor, known for her women's empowerment anthem "I Will Survive"; and the rock band Kiss. https://www.npr.org/2025/08/13/nx-s1-5500305/kennedy-center-honors-announcement-kiss-strait-gaynor-stallone-crawford-trump 2
The Frankish Reich Posted August 15 Posted August 15 Are they gonna be there? Peter Criss in cat makeup? Are they still, umm, mentally fit?

The makeup and antics just didn’t appeal to me, though I bet the shows were probably pretty cool when viewed through the eyes of a teenager in the 1970s. There was also that whole Knights in the Service of Satan rumor/angle and I was not down for eternal damnation in the least. It’s been interesting seeing the evolution of the business side of all that though, and we used to watch the Gene Simmons reality show, the guy has vision.

Not a big KISS fan either but I attended a concert which was part of the last of a string of farewell tours. It was a good show. Played their hits, performed their antics, and lots of flames shooting up into the area giving off a lot of heat you could feel. Going onto the concourse to the rest room and concessions provided some entertainment seeing numerous fans dressed in KISS attire via the full body amour look. Always amazing people can be so passionate about such things. But nothing like the old days when the show ended and the lights went on to reveal the entire arena filled with pot smoke! Still in those days no metal detectors, bag searches, or pat downs were needed. While the atmosphere was a little crazy it was still generally civil. 1
Wacka Posted August 15 Author Posted August 15 Saw them in 1978 at the Aud (I was 21). Excellent show. Gene Simmons has never done drugs or drink. Nice Jewish boy. Came here from Isreal with nis mom, Real name is Chaim Witz. Paul Stanley wrote most of their hits. Due to a birth defect, he has a misshapen ear and is practically deaf in it. Ace Frehley was fired for his drinking and drug use, but cleaned himself up. Peter Criss quit or was fired (depending who you ask) from the band. I'm sure they will al show up. No one is that big of an a-hole to turn down an honor like that, 2

Agreed--saw The Who/Clash/David Johannsen at Rich Stadium in 1982. A little crazy, and I'm sure there was a scuffle or two somewhere but nothing when of note. Looking back now, and seeing the pictures of the stadium that day is pretty amazing.
The Frankish Reich Posted August 16 Posted August 16 Kid in my middle school when I said KISS were stupid: "Yeah, you won't be saying that when they spit blood in your face." Ladies and gentlemen, our new generation Trump Center Honorees. What's next, cage fights on the White House lawn?
B-Man Posted August 29 Posted August 29 Leftists Melt Down Over ‘Gay Icon’ Gloria Gaynor Being A Republican Donor The 'I Will Survive' singer donated $22,000 in support of GOP candidates between 2023 and 2024. By Amanda Harding Singer Gloria Gaynor is causing a meltdown among leftists after news recently surfaced that she made financial contributions to Republicans. The 81-year-old two-time Grammy Award winner first made waves after it was revealed that she would be honored by President Donald Trump with a Kennedy Center award. While many leftists expected Gaynor to decline the tribute, she surprised them all by graciously accepting it. Then, it was revealed by the leftist outlet Meidas News that the singer had donated $22,000 to Republican candidates between 2023 and 2024. Gaynor is widely regarded as a gay icon, primarily because of her 1978 disco anthem “I Will Survive.” https://www.dailywire.com/news/leftists-melt-down-over-gay-icon-gloria-gaynor-being-a-republican-donor?

The correct headline: "Anti-Trumpers Point Out that Long-Forgotten Disco Queen Suddenly Given Kennedy Center Honors For No Apparent Reason Turns Out to Be a Republican Campaign Contributor" If you'd asked me last month "is Gloria Gaynor still alive?" I think I'd have answered "No."
The Frankish Reich Posted August 29 Posted August 29 I'm sorry. I realize this was all just more proof of my cultural illiteracy. I seem to have missed this classic performance/proof of life video! In 2022, Gaynor competed in season eight of The Masked Singer as "Mermaid" who rode around on a giant clam-like vehicle that the Men in Black had to push around. After being eliminated on "Andrew Lloyd Webber Night" alongside Mario Cantone as "Maize", Gaynor did her encore performance of "I Will Survive". Will Trump join Gloria on stage to do his jacking off two guys at the same time signature move?

Let's be fair...a lot of these honorees are sort of past their prime. 2022 included Bette Midler....George Clooney (before he stabbed his old pal JB in the back)...a pipless Gladys Knight. 2021....Joni Mitchell. 2019...Sally Field...Earth Wind and Fire. And so on. Led Zeppelin was an industry giant and certainly a major light that eclipsed that of GG, but by the time they were honored in 2012 it had been a long time since they rock and rolled. Gloria Gaynor was afraid and petrified, only to discover she had the gumption and tenacity to survive (hey hey). I respect the heck outta that. 1

There are certainly some questionable honorees. Most of the musical honorees however, have had pretty solid/influential body of work. Joni Mitchell, Earth Wind and Fire, Led Zeppelin - all great musicians and/or songwriters. There's probably some lesser talents there too. I have no problem with George Strait this year, as bringing back (keeping alive?) that western swing sound was a cultural achievement. KISS? Whatever. I guess they are living comic book icons.

I’m not advocating for KISS in the big picture (the Kennedy Center honors seems to be a big circle jerk tbh) but just based on sheer popularity they were hugely popular and relevant for a long time. Joni Mitchell was an important artist on some level, but she was 152 years old when honored. Meanwhile a brilliant artist like Enrico Pallazzo is passed over again and again. It’s just not right.
