The Bills problem was not trading away Stefon Diggs.  Between the off-field distractions, cryptic social media posts, degrading relationship with Josh Allen and his total lack of production in the playoffs... his time in Buffalo had completely run its course.

The problem was that our GM decided to replace a Top 5-10 WR with rookie Keon Coleman, Curtis Samuel and Mack Hollins.  And then when that backfired in the first month of the 2024 season, he was forced to scramble and trade a mid-round pick for an aging Amari Cooper... almost totally negating his compensation for Diggs.

Then clearly not learning the lesson, he basically swapped Hollins for career #3 receiver Josh Palmer.  With Cooper leaving, there was still no urgency to add a true #1 option.  Instead we went bargain-bin shopping for Elijah Moore, and did nothing in the draft.  When questioned about this decision, our GM then went on an angry rant against a radio show host.

And as the cherry on top, our GM was unable to add anything at the trade deadline.

Tons of NFL players are whack jobs. Part of the job of the coach and the leaders of the team is to bring it all together. Hard to say if situations when it doesnt work out are on the player or the team culture. Likely somewhere in the middle. But it has been several years now where this team rarely shows a lot of emotion. There seems to be a lot of life is bigger than football culture in the building.

How fitting that a 90 page thread is titled “Diggs drama.” Total diva.

But aren’t most great or really good WR?  I can’t believe the Bills let Hopkins go.. he has been just as important as Diggs for Maye.

Assume you mean Hollins, please send a thank you note to Brandon Beane at 1 Bills Drive, he will immediately open it ASAP with a MA postmark lol.

A couple things:

Diggs counted for 31 mil in dead cap.  He was a big reason they couldnt sign anyone

Cooper is younger than Diggs

Saying they don't value #1 WR because they don't have one isn't exactly genuine. WR salaries are inflated, and most of the guys that hit the market aren't worth their cost. Like it or not, they decided they could build an offense around multiple guys, an OL and RB instead of investing heavily in a single player. It was successful last season and not as much so this season for some reason.

People are quick to chase what they don't have and throw away what they do...but nobody really knows what a #1 WR would cost this team in other ways. Like if we had signed DK instead of Palmer, we most certainly wouldn't have signed Bosa and maybe not Cook.

All true. But everybody eats is failing not only in Buffalo, but also in Green Bay. It all works until you need someone to make a play even if the defense takes everything away.  Neither Josh nor Jordan Love has a guy they can throw to, even if he's covered, who can make a play. Green Bay lost on Monday Night because of this. The whole philosophy doesn't work if a team needs to come from behind.

This is actually a deeper discussion. Beane is very wedded to the concept of "value." You see it in where he devotes money and draft resources. Elite WRs cost almost as much as QBs, but they only touch the ball 5-7 times a game. And any WR catch carries, by definition, an opportunity cost for the production of the other skill position players on the team. So, they thought you could spread that money, and therefore the opportunities, around to a bunch of good but not great players. Their thought was that the production of a bunch of 500-yard guys is equal to the production of one 1,400-yard guy (Diggs) and one 700-yard guy (Davis). This is true, until someone needs to make a single play to win a game. Then, Shakir + Kincaid + Moore + Coleman do not equal one Justin Jefferson or even one Tee Higgins.
