This is a developing story

Scottie Scheffler, the top-ranked golfer in the world, was handcuffed and detained by Louisville police Friday morning, for a traffic-related incident as he was attempting to enter Valhalla Golf Club for the second round of the PGA Championship.

Tournament officials delayed the start of Friday’s round by an 1 hour, 20 minutes, but Scheffler’s status was uncertain and it wasn’t clear Friday morning whether the world’s most dominant player would be on the tee box for the second round of the year’s second major championship.

Traffic entering the golf club was backed up because of an overnight fatal traffic accident. Scheffler attempted to navigate around traffic and bypass a heavy police presence to reach the course, according to an ESPN report. ESPN aired video of Scheffler wearing handcuffs being escorted by two officers to a police cruiser.

“Right now he’s going to jail,” an officer told ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington on the scene.

According to the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections, Scheffler was booked at 8:28 a.m. Eastern time and assigned inmate No. 00654436. There was no immediate information on pending charges of his release. A mug shot posted online Friday morning depicted an unsmiling Scheffler wearing a jail-issued orange jumpsuit.

A Louisville police spokesman did not immediately respond to a request to comment. The shocking morning detainment started with an accident around 5 a.m. In a statement, police say they responded to a call of a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian and a bus.

“Our preliminary investigation found that an adult male pedestrian was crossing Shelbyville Road south to north when he was struck by a shuttle bus that was traveling eastbound in the compulsory center lane dedicated for buses,” the statement said.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Vehicles, pedestrians and police near the entrance of the Valhalla Golf Club before the delayed start of the second round of the PGA Championship.

The accident caused a backup entering the course. Darlington reported that Scheffler drove past a police officer who had asked the golfer to stop. An officer attached himself to the side of Scheffler’s car. After the car stopped, an officer banged a flash light on car, Darlington reported, before pulling Sheffler out of the vehicle, putting him against the vehicle and placed him in handcuffs.

Scheffler just released a statement which, predictably, said all the right things. He said there was a misunderstanding as to what was expected of him.  It concluded with thoughts to the family of the man who passed away after being struck by a shuttle bus. The mug shot and distraction will get all the attention, but somebody died here.

Without seeing exactly what happened it’s hard to have a strong opinion, but it does sound like a simple case of miscommunication.

Rory got a police escort when he was running late for a tee time. Probably not by the same guy, I’m guessing.

I lived for more than a decade on a PGA tournament course. The entire community gets into preparing for and enjoying the week. Every accommodation is made for the players, especially if it means not missing a tee time and getting DQ’ed.  This sounds like it’s exactly the opposite of what might typically be expected, but somebody died and the police had a job to do. No idea if this was a redneck cop on a power trip, or if he was doing his job and Scottie effed up by being an entitled jerk. I won’t slam anyone with the info available now and just assume it’s what he said, an unfortunate misunderstanding.

I think this is from Scottie’s  attorney.

“In the early hours of the morning in advance of his tee time Scottie was going to the course to begin his pre round preparation. Due to the combination of event traffic and a traffic fatality in the area it was a very chaotic situation He was proceeding as directed by another traffic officer and driving a marked player’s vehicle with credentials visible. In the confusion,Scottie is alleged to have disregarded a different officer’s traffic signals resulting in these charges. Multiple eyewitnesses have confirmed that he did not do anything wrong but was simply proceeding as directed. He stopped immediately upon being directed to and never at any point assaulted any officer with his vehicle. We will litigate this matter as needed and he will be completely exonerated. “

I heard one of the owners of Valhalla called the Mayor and then the police department and ended up personally driving Scottie back to the course.

I’m not an attorney but publicly mocking an arresting officer seems like a bad strategy to me.

What specifically is mocking about that?

He seems to be subtly making light of the officer noting his uniform pants were ripped.  “I’ve never in all my years……”.

Either:

1. The officer was truly dragged to the ground and his pants ripped,  in which case the damage to pants might not be a big deal but knocking an officer to the ground certainly seems to be.  Nothing to make fun of there.  Or

2. The officer was not really dragged to the ground so the pants weren’t really ripped at all.  Why not focus on the truth of the report as a whole and leave the pants out of it?

To me he seems to deny the main portion of the police report but also acknowledge……in a mocking way……the pants being damaged.  That seems dumb.

Bingo

I once had an important appointment and was stuck in traffic to the point my blood pressure was going to the danger zone from anxiety and stress. You aren't at your best in those moments. I agree with what you posted that this was a "misunderstanding"  regarding Mr Schrefter not wanting to be late.

I totally get that. It isn't how you want to enter a PGA tournament. But a person died. And I don't think it is ever a great idea to argue with Police either . Just sayin

I'm sure there is a little bit of blame on both sides.....Scheffler acting a little too entitled and the cop being a little overzealous.

This will never see the inside of a courtroom, IMO, and Scheffler will have to pay a sizeable fine.

The same result could have been gained in a more private manner if the cops just wrote him a few tickets and moved on.

We live near a PGA golf course here on the SouthSide. Remember the father and son duo who ran out onto the field and attacked the KC Royals 1st base coach @ a Sox game in 2002?  Well, the father of the kid tried to work the bar at the 2003 PGA when it it came to town. 😆🤣

Wow... Only in the South Chicago area:

EDIT: It was the 2003 US Open. NOT PGA.

Oh... Translation for all this:

"Scheff is white."

😆🤣  😏

I was talking about the statement from the attorney you quoted. That sounded fair and rational to me.

I don’t know who the guy is who put out the tweet with the police report. That had a bit of a jab in it.

Seems like you're conflating the quote and tweet in that post: Don Van Natta Jr is an ESPN writer, not Scheffler's lawyer, so his only strategy is getting clicks/likes/reposts.

As an online commentator similarly disconnected from any legal ramifications, I concur that Detective Gillis sounds like he was a big mad baby this morning and probably ruined those pants by wetting them.

I did mistake the ESPN guy’s quote as being from the attorney.  My bad.

That’s cool, we all make mistakes be they big or small. Not everyone owns up to it, so that’s a good thing.

In an absolutely shocking turn of events, it appears that an American law enforcement officer wildly embellished his incident report in order to justify his inappropriate and extra-judicial behavior.
