He was stuck in 2 LB cover role. he never hit his draft potential but geeesh he was put in weird spots on the bend-but-don’t-win Leslie D

He just signed with a team for which his role will be exactly the same. But he is getting paid. Eberflus is a Rod Marinelli disciple, same school of Tony Dungy Tampa 2 as Lovie Smith, Leslie Frazier, Dick Jauron. Also bend but don’t break.

Man, I was so excited and had such high expectations when we drafted him.  I always hoped that "the next game" he would surprise me and play with more instinct, but that never materialized.

He was a very frustrating player to watch all these years.  Kinda like a really big kid that didn't know how big he was, which showed through on how hesitant he was in his tackling.

In the end, I'm relieved he's gone.

Oh... and Matt Milano is 10 times the player Edmunds is.

100

everyone should go back to that draft day. And his expectations. Glad he’s gone. And glad beane didn’t spend for him.

Why do you think he was attempted to be used any differently than Luke Keuchley, who had a huge career in a McD system.  That's where my ceiling for Edmunds was.  I'm not attacking, honestly curious.

***ALERT***

Due to having an opinion, you have been banned for 3 seconds.  I hope you've learned your lesson.  Join the collective or perish.

I am not sure why they used him different, but they definitely did.  Personally, I think while the system installed was McD's, I think it had more to do with how Frazier moved the pieces around and called plays inside McD's system.  I would actually be quite curious to what it would look like if McD called the D with Edmunds still in it, but obviously that won't be happening.

For whatever reason, they frequently use Edmunds more like a 3rd safety than an attacking LB.  And my personal opinion as to why is I think because of Edmunds freakish athleticism they feel like he can make up a lot of ground fast.  They did seem like they turned Edmunds more loose this year too and he ended up having his best year where he was used to attack the ball more.

We will see what happens in Chicago, but I think Edmunds is going to prove better than all the people cheering his departure think.  People cheered Fletchers departure too and regretted it later.

I was fine not resigning him as we need to divert some of the money from the D into the offensive line now, but I do think Edmunds is going to do well in Chicago.

Just my 2 cents :)

Oooooooof. I think the fan base was too hard on Edmunds but that is just way too much money. Edmunds and Milano are a lot alike in play.

But $18 million a year? Heck no for me

Milano is the exact opposite. Not exactly a physical specimen, not huge, not super fast but extremely instinctual and way better at making big plays which is why he’s way better and also why he’s a Buffalo Bill and Tremaine isn’t.

I am excited that the question of whether this is McDermott’s defense will finally be answered based on what we see this year.

The Bears are a mess. It’s strange how many people think that GM has potential. They make really poor decisions and Fields isn’t the guy.

Nothing you said is close to true. They made a great trade and loaded up on high picks and got a number 1. Their receivers, one of the worst groups in nfl, are now better than ours. They have a ton of cap room and have added good pieces. Now I know a 24 year old MLB who constantly played in top 5 defense must suck but a lot teams would enjoy getting a player like this.

As far as fields sucking, his second year numbers are very similar to Allen’s. But I guess Allen is the only young qb who can improve. And if fields does suck, they have a ton of picks to grab a guy next year and he will step into a good situation.

when they over/ under wins some out, let’s circle back and put some money on it. Deal?

Well now they got right of awful Frazier and terrible Tremaine, we should easily see our defense rise from our awful finish of, checks notes, first.

Agreed on the instincts but OLB is a lot easier to be instinctive than MLB.

I am also excited to see how the defense plays if McD calls the plays myself.  The defense is getting a little make over though, so hopefully we fill the new holes with competent players too where McD can be aggressive in games.

Not sure why you think it was that different. And if it really was, then that is even worse for Edmunds because Keuchly has far, far better pass defense numbers.

Might have been a little different with different DCs, but it was largely the same role in the same scheme.

I'm not happy Edmunds is gone. I think it will be a bigger hole to fill than most Bills fans are giving him credit for. But from what I've gone back and watched, he and Keuchly had the same or very similar jobs. Keuchly was just better all around. Whether defending passes, or attacking runners. Maybe it was the difference in skill that made it look like very different roles, haha.

Milano is a Bill and Tremaine isn't because Milano got drafted and paid first.  We couldn't afford to pay both, and need to invest in the offense as well.  Especially with what Tremaine got in the open market.  But keep you biased hit campaign going, I know its your schtick.

Bills could have easily traded Milano for a decent pick and then paid Edmunds.

I think they just value Milano more.

1 - LK is a borderline HOF and was born with MLB instincts. So that’s a hard comparison.

2 - https://buffalowdown.com/2023/02/17/buffalo-bills-tremaine-edmunds-pff-improved/amp/

its pff so take it for it’s worth but TE was the best cover LB last year.

I get the money but it’s crazy that with an awful DC and a soft MLB we had the number one defense.

How much do lbs get in trades? Honestly, I don’t remember a big return for a LB. Also, Milano is cheaper. That helps too. I think MM is the better player but if the costs were similar, it would be a tougher decision.

you don’t pay guys like Tre White and an average tight end big money

White and Dawson and Von Miller were three of our highest paid players last season.  The level of production we got out them (Miller was zero after injury), is one of the key reasons we floundered in the playoffs.  If you look at what the Chiefs, niners, Eagles and Bengals got out of their top paid players, the difference is astounding.

Maybe a Day 2 pick.. Young All Pro LB on a solid multi-year contract.

I just felt like they attacked more with Luke and used Edmunds more off the ball.
