Boomer Esiason suggests the Bills should trade for Barkley

You see this guy as Barry Sanders.  I see him as another back that will be limited to short yardage gains without any push from the line.

You still haven't explained how we afford him this season and even if we somehow could, re-signing him for next year is all but an impossibility with our cap situation.

Barkley is a major talent at his position and top 5 easily when healthy. If you think he wouldn't be better than Singletary who probably wouldn't start on most teams, then I don't know what you're watching. He can make our online look better. As far as how we can afford him. GMs work magic all the time. You think they can't figure that out? They can find a way to get it done

I assure you, the Giants OL, the one with Jon Feliciano as it’s starting C, is not better than Buffalo’s.
Bills OL is more than adequate when healthy… I.E., Singletary ypc his entire career… Find me another unit btw that doesn’t struggle when having to trot out their third option at Center in addition to replacing a guard and tackle…

Then explain why our backs are not having any success carrying the football.  Show me the holes the line is supposed to be opening the way the play was designed.  Show me the push they are getting against the D-lines.

So your answer is Barkley doesn't need a line and Beane can make it work when we essentially have nothing left in cap space now, especially with the signing of Rhodes, and like 7 mil over going into next season.

Gotcha

OK, post vids of the holes they are opening and push they are getting outside of the Rams game.

No, GMs do not "work magic".  It's simple math.  He has already done the restructures to pay for what roster moves he did this year.

Asking for a BIG trade for Barkley right now would border on recklessness.

It's not just about opening holes, it's about when those holes aren't open, what your RB does and simply put Barkley can easily do things Singletary can't. There's no denying that

Which is most of the time.  So your position is that Barkley will constantly be able to improvise and make yards out of what's basically a blown up play at that point.

He's telling you we've already done that to make the signings we had this offseason.  We are roughly 7M over cap going into next year as it stands right now.

Barkley will be able to improvise a lot more and a lot better than Singletary. That's just the type of athlete he is. He can move and adjust like Singletary can't

With no holes and no O-line push. OK

Geez, you've just got this all figured out already. Maybe we should fire McD and Beane and hire you for both.  Can you do OC too?  We can fire Dorsey then as well.

You're right, it will. Some people aren't getting re-signed and/or are getting released.

You can only restructure Salaries, Options Bonuses and adding Void years.  That's the "magic".

Go to Spotrac and show us how you get another $6M for Barkley.

If that's what it takes to open that $6 that yes, I would call that magic to the people that think it's impossible

I'm not gonna go through and tell you who gets restructured. The bottom line is, players can be. I'm sure if this was in Beane's plan, he can figure it out

I'm not a GM and neither are you. That's Beane's job. You're under the assumption that it "can't be done" and it's "impossible". But you know nothing either which is what you call bsing. I'm telling you if Beane has plans for it, he will find a way. It can be done. We all know it

Bills RBs had 20 carries for 89 yards in that game.

The passing game won us that game and it was the passing game that opened up the running game after the game was out of control.  We did not run particularly well in that game and certainly didn't in the Miami game.

Sorry I left you with this conversation.  I was talking to my brother in Buffalo.

Yes, I wanted him to say who to restructure (I did it because there really isn't much money left to do that).

Beane will need to do some moves just to get enough cash to get through the season, especially if these injuries don't stop.

I'm getting to be an old man, when it comes to finances the people who say "all you got to do" I have found are generally the

one's that end up at payday loans.  Generally.

These are the type of people who also think as long as they have checks in their checkbook, they have money.

I don’t like it. Injury prone RB in a contract year playing with a limited sample size.

We’d be mortgaging future draft picks for a 1 season rental and then surely letting him walk in FA because we don’t have the cap space to pay him the kind of money he could fetch in the open market.

It reeks of desperation and of making a move for the sake of making a move.

If he’s injury prone, with a limited sample size, why do you think he could fetch a lot of money on the open market?

Bills are in win now mode.  See Von Miller.  It’s not desperate, it’s putting all chips in.  Beane won’t do it just to do it.  If he could get Barkley at the right price he would consider it if there’s an injury necessity.

As it stands,  the running game issues are offensive line related, not RB related (at least this past Sunday).  So I doubt we see Beane trade for Barkley.

Exactly.  I don't know why so many people think if we just get Barkley, all our running game problems are solved.

The Bills are $7.6M over the cap next season and this is the list of all our free agents.  People can't even explain how we hold on to all the good ones on this list, nevermind how we're going to be able to sign big name new ones.

No as a Buffalo Bills fan no we already embarrassed ourselves years ago choosing CJ Spiller with a number one pick same deal here. Except Saquon Barkley has more miles on his legs no thank you no draft picks. It isn’t even good for the New York Giants because nothing is reversing taking Saquon Barkley over Josh Allen the New York Giants embarrassed themselves like the Buffalo Bills management during the Bills draught years of bad drafting in my opinion. Go Bills! Let’s Go Buffalo

Beane is not going to do anything crazy until he sees what the new TV contracts bring to the Cap Space.

Spotrac already did its "add $10M" to its 2023 figures.  No one knows yet what it will end up being.

If I was to describe Brandon Beane when it comes to the cap it's this.

He pushes the money as far it can go BUT he isn't reckless about it.  I totally like how he handles the money in general.

After the first 3 games, our RB1 has a total of 80 yards rushing. A 3.5 average. If we’re dropping back to pass on 90% of the plays Josh will eventually get hurt. It's just a matter of time. Daboll and now Dorsey are just set in their ways on ignoring a run attack. Play action is rendered worthless if the opposing team doesn't even fear your runs.

It can be done. There are 53 players on this roster. Any one of them can have a contract restructure or conversion of money to a bonus at any time. You seem to think that because we have restructured a couple contracts that those are the only ones we can do. We have more than 4 players on our team

Would Barkley be a clear upgrade for us? Obviously.

Would it cost the Bills way too much in the process? Absolutely.

Every trade is a risk, but considering the injury history & what the Giants would want in return, hellllllllll no

LOL.  I shouldn't have let the conversation get to where it's at.  If you're giving me some sarcasm, I probably deserve it.

If it's not it should have its own thread.  I'm not the only one who enjoys that kind of stuff.

Just in case, I will say, there are only 6 players (not 53) with salaries above $2M who could MAYBE be restructured right now.

I use $2M because you can't restructure Base Salary to zero.  It has to be at least player minimum.

4 of them are on the last year of their contracts so any restructure goes to dead cap next year.

That leaves Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs (and Diggs has already restructured and had his money pushed out).

Open up the Spotrac site and click to sort on "Base Salary".  Edmunds will be on top.  He's not restructuring without a new contract.

Same goes with Poyer, Keenum and Oliver.  There's a lot more to this stuff, but that is the basics.

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/buffalo-bills/cap/

EDIT:  Sorry, linked wrong site.  This is right.

No no, I was being goofy about it, but I really was wanting an explanation. I also thought any players could have salaries converted to bonuses, but I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to contracts, what qualifies as "dead cap," or what options the Bills have when trying to keep cornerstone players when cap-strapped.

So thanks for detailing some of that!

Seriously, 3 of 4 runs he’d be hit in the backfield. Three of those runs would be -3 to +2 yd gains.

The 4th would be a 10-80 yd gain.

C’mon man.
josh Allen’s salary is ~$18 million. After 3 games probably $15 million. Convert that to $6 million bonus and $9 million salary. Done.

Yes, it might not be wise because you’re making the cap in 2023-2028 that much worse.

But it can be done. It’s not rocket science.
