The discipline of this defense.

After watching yesterday, I continue to be blown away at how incredibly sound and well coached this defense is. There was two plays in particular where I thought, "WOW, that is a combination of great coaching, execution, and discipline." This defense follows their keys like a team I haven't seen in a long time. Here are the plays:

1) Siran Neal blitzes off of the edge, and the Titans ran a swing with their WR. Based on that blitz, one wrong misstep or misread by our defense that play beats us 95% of the time for a big play. Poyer (could have been Hyde) comes from the safety position and fills with a gain of ~1 yard making a great open field tackle.

2) Titans run a power stretch. We're 100% beat to the outside. Hughes was being double and to make up ground, spins to the outside and forces Henry back inside for the LB's to fill. It was truly a very savvy play by Hughes that I don't think he makes even last year.

When I'm watching this defense, the cohesion has been absolutely unreal. There's very little drop off with sub packages and our rotation is strong. If we stay healthy, we have a VERY special defensive unit. It's been very fun to watch.

Yea they are extremely well coached, have game specific plans, make solid adjustments and have some depth in key areas.

2nd in the league in yards per game

3rd in the league in points per game

And they are not doing it forcing a bunch of turnovers where you always wonder how sustainable it is.... they are just doing it with great football.

And that's with a game against NE*

The continuity they've had is finally paying big dividends. Last year they were good but they had mental relapses at times. This year, with another year in the scheme and working together as players, they are truly eliminating all mental mistakes from their defense.

however the red zone defense has been not as good.  not sure why the RZ defense is giving up TDs every visit except for penalties by Tenn this year.  But they aren't letting folks get to the RZ often either.

It has improved the past two weeks. Picked if NE and forced TEN back twice yesterday.

Does watching our defense in film review  make your knickers a little shorter?

I also thing having 2 very good, experienced and smart safeties is really key.

Hyde and Poyer are excellent and well disciplined players. Beane gets an A+ for these guys alone. He could have folded his tent and called it a day.

Best part is those turnovers will come in bunches at some point soon. The D is special, just need the O to hit 21pts a game and we're golden

Sal says it is because they coach every player on the 53 man roster the same no matter what which is very different from most teams he sees where they coach the starters hard and leave the backups to kind of fend for themselves.

He says in terms of film, understanding the gameplan, understanding their roles, on field ,etc every player is coached the same no matter if they are playing or not playing or how much they are playing.

That is thoroughness and discipline and the players from top to bottom are so bought into what this coaching staff is telling them to do it is amazing...players step in and perform with almost no drop off.

The fact that they are doing this without turnovers means it's much more sustainable, no? A lot of times pics, fumbles, etc are "luck" in the NFL. Can we create more opportunities? sure but forcing 5 + 3 and outs week in and week out is very sustainable.

Yeah, I love this about our coaching staff.. that's how you create a team, not "stars"

Yeah and if need be, we have Kurt Coleman to come in. There'll be no drop off. Marlowe has played pretty well too.

If this D stays this good all year, I think there is a VERY high likelihood we lose Frazier to a HC gig.  I know the D is McDermott's model, but Frazier is the one who is hands on working with these guys and calling plays... this D is amazing, and it's thanks largely to both McDermott and Frazier in their approach and teaching.  This isn't a D full of stars, but it's a D full of great players who are smart and very we well prepared, playing together in a fantastic system.

Yeah...this D is no longer one dimensional and it has depth. Not a lot of star power, but who cares...it works.

I wonder if Frazier wants another HC job. I wonder if he really likes his position and being a part of building this thing.

Not to mention, with the way the league is going with young offensive minds... does he get consideration as a past coach that didn't do great as an HC(especially as a defensive guy)?

This is where my thinking with Frazier is. He’s an older defensive retread HC. Unless we get to the playoffs and win two games with dominant D I doubt he gets a serious look from GMs or owners. However, he’s going to get a lot of interview offers because he’s one of the best minority HC candidates, and he could very well impress an owner and get another HC gig. Im not sure he’s given up on the dream, but I don’t think he’ll just take any ole gig like the Skins job.
