How Texans can lift Deshaun Watson; Cowboys unlock potential

Former NFL player and scout Bucky Brooks knows the ins and outs of this league, providing keen insight in his notebook. The topics of this edition include:

-- How Eric Ebron is finally starting to live up to the billing.

3) Why Eric Ebron is breaking out in Year 5. In the NFL, one man's trash is another man's treasure. Coaches and scouts are always willing to give a former first-rounder a chance to revive his career, particularly when he was selected as a top-10 pick in a draft loaded with Pro Bowlers.

That's why I'm not surprised the Indianapolis Colts gave Eric Ebron an opportunity to carve out a role as a TE1 on an offense that desperately needed to put more playmakers around Andrew Luck. Now, I certainly didn't expect the fifth-year pro to be tied for the league lead in receiving touchdowns (6) after six weeks. After all, Ebron totaled 11 touchdowns during his four seasons with the Detroit Lions. Still, Ebron was universally viewed as a top-tier talent in the 2014 draft class with the kind of size (6-foot-4, 250 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine), athleticism and playmaking potential to dominate as a flex tight end.

In Detroit, Ebron never quite developed into the difference maker Lions officials expected when he was selected ahead of the likes of Odell Beckham Jr., Aaron Donald, Ryan Shazier, Zack Martin, Taylor Lewan and C.J. Mosley. Part of Ebron's failures could be attributed to scheme and utilization, but the bulk of the blame belongs to the young player due to his immaturity, inconsistent hands and lack of discipline. Lions officials questioned his commitment to the game and wondered if he would ever get it as a pro. Moreover, they didn't think he could evolve from his role as a pass-catching tight end to the traditional "Y" position.

So according to McD...thebar at WR is so low they are literally looking for someone who can line up correctly. Smh.

I think it's more than that.  It's also about knowing how to correctly run routes to maximize the effectiveness of the combinations that are schemed to create open receivers.

2018 Colts Preview: Colts/Bills, Week 7

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Colts (1-5) host the Buffalo Bills (2-4) this Sunday in a rematch from last year’s Week 14 “Snow Bowl.”

Both teams are dealing with some high-profile injuries that have them relying on the “next man up.” Let’s take a look at this week’s matchup.

2018 NFL Offensive Line Rankings: All 32 teams' units after Week 6 | NFL Analysis | Pro Football Focus

It’s that time of the week again. If you’ve been following the series, you know we highlighted the top performers on each offensive line a week ago. Now, it’s time to flip to the other side of the coin and discuss the weak links on each line so far this season. Let’s get to the rankings.

OL-RANKS-768x433.png

10. IND-Colts-Header.png
With a hodgepodge of backups rolling through up front in Indianapolis, the results have been surprisingly good. Joe Haeg gets the dubious distinction of lowest-graded qualifying offensive lineman, though, as he held up alright flip-flopping from left to right tackle in Weeks 1 and 2 before getting destroyed by Brandon Graham on the right side for six pressures in Week 3.

30. BUF-Bills-Header.png

When you get benched for Russell Bodine, you know things have gone south. Ryan Groy was manhandled to 40.0 and 51.6 overall grades the first two weeks of the season at center before being replaced.

Derek Anderson gets his turn to try to wake the Bills' woeful offense against the Colts

k4RVSMXg?format=jpg&name=600x314

Sal Maiorana, Rochester Democrat and Chronicle

If ever there was a condemnation of the state of the Buffalo Bills, it is the betting line on Sunday afternoon’s game in Indianapolis.

Normally, I don’t pay any attention to the spread, but this one caught my eye. The Bills at 2-4 have a better record than Frank Reich’s 1-5 Colts, yet the home team is a 7.5-point favorite. That’s somewhat incredible because the wise guys in Las Vegas believe the Colts are 4.5 points better than Buffalo beyond the standard home team three-point margin that is typically built into the spread.

Talk about a complete lack of respect for the Bills, but does anyone have a sound argument against that logic?

The Colts rank 27th in the NFL in yards gained per offensive play despite the presence of star quarterback Andrew Luck, and on defense they rank 23rd in yards allowed and 30th in points allowed per game. This is not a very good team, with a roster devoid of top-end talent, so it speaks volumes about just how bad Buffalo’s offense is, from quarterback to receivers to offensive line, that Indianapolis is favored by this much.

Here’s my preview of the game:

Leo Roth, Rochester Democrat and Chronicle

ORCHARD PARK — If there is any doubt that Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck’s surgically repaired throwing shoulder that sidelined him for all of 2017 is fully healed, just check out who is leading the NFL in pass attempts in 2018.

Luck has thrown 288 passes, an average of 48 a game, during the Colts’ 1-5 start. He has completed 186, which also leads the league, and he is second in touchdown passes with 16. And yes, he leads the NFL in interceptions, too, with eight.

Rookie head coach Frank Reich has given Luck the green light to play a bombs-away style to stay competitive, which the Colts have been.

Luck's talent and that aggressive style from Reich, the architect of Great Football Comebacks, presents a major test for the Buffalo Bills(2-4) at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday.

“They love to throw the ball and he’s doing a good job of it,’’ Bills safety Micah Hyde said of Luck. “Andrew has always been a decisive guy, always knows basically what the defense is doing on the snap, he does a good job of hard snaps and making the defense get lined up. It’s another tough challenge for us. At the end of the day it’s about making plays on the ball because he’s going to be throwing it.’’

Week 7 NFL score predictions: A guide to best games, more

buf.png?w=110&h=110&transparent=trueind.png?w=110&h=110&transparent=true

Bills (2-4) at Colts (1-5): 1 p.m. ET, CBS

Point spread: IND -7.5 | Matchup quality: 32.7 (of 100)

Mike Rodak's pick: This game has the potential to be sloppy between two teams that rank in the top six in turnovers lost and in the top nine in turnovers forced. It seems reasonable to lean in the direction of Andrew Luck over Derek Andersonand in favor of the home team. But one bounce the Bills' way could change the outcome. Colts 17, Bills 14

Mike Wells' pick: The Colts are off to their worst start since the 2011 season. The only positive outside of Luck's play this season is that they could have receiver T.Y. Hilton (hamstring) back for the first time since Week 4. Hilton's return will help a group that has 13 drops in the past three games. Scoring will be tough, as Buffalo is ranked 10th in total defense. Colts 17, Bills 10

FPI win projection: IND, 79.5 percent. The Colts are the biggest favorite of the week, according to FPI, but they might not put up points on offense the way they have over the past few weeks. Luck's three-game streak of 300-plus yards and three touchdown passes could come to an end, as the Bills' under-the-radar defense ranks fourth in defensive efficiency.

Buffalo Bills are NFL's 3rd-ranked defense. Players detail how they'll deal with Colts' Andrew Luck

e6f_ap18287669040379.jpeg

Orchard Park, N.Y. -- The Buffalo Bills play their fifth road game of the season Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts to end a brutal stretch of games that included just two games at New Era Field through almost the first two months of the season.

The Bills defense has held up and has even gained momentum as the season has progressed. After holding the Tennessee Titans to just four field goals and 221 yards of total offense in Week 5, Buffalo followed that up with perhaps an even better showing on the road in Houston. The Bills sacked Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson seven times, forced three turnovers and held them to just 216 yards of total offense.

Buffalo is ranked third in the league in total defense, allowing just 311 yards per game this year. The Bills have faced Aaron Rodgers, Philip Rivers, Kirk Cousins, Watson and now Colts quarterback Andrew Luck.

Offensively the Bills have been bad this season for the most part, ranking last in passing offense through six weeks and second last in total offense. The defense has had to be almost perfect to keep the team in games and now they face Luck, who has attempted the most passes this season and has the second-most touchdowns (16) behind only Patrick Mahomes.

The defense is saying all the right things and isn't implying any frustration with the struggling offense. But Bills running back LeSean McCoy admitted this week that the players on the offensive side of the ball feel like they're letting down the defense.

NYUP.com caught up with a few players from the Bills' defense and coach Sean McDermott to get their take on Luck and what it's going to take to slow him down Sunday.

...is it reasonable to believe that not ONE damn receiver on this club knows how to run a route?......better be wearing some "big boyz pants" at this high paying level.....shouldn't "routes and hands" be a prerequisite?.....hell you have Robiskie as WR Coach with 37 years experience AND Cully who despite being QB Coach, has his background with WR's.......seriously?....

Bad news for fans of interceptions: The Bills are starting Derek Anderson in place of Nathan Peterman, a true master of the art who introduced the across-the-body late throw over the middle to his repertoire last week. There is still hope for some pick-related fireworks, however; Colts receivers react like Andrew Luck is delivering changeups ... or at least, their hands do. Still, look for Indy to prevail. Luck's mobility and pocket awareness will be the key factor against a frenetic Bills pass rush. The Colts have lost all but one of their games, yet they've been at their opponent's doorstep in the fourth quarter every time out. The Bills simply won't feature enough offense to do the same, even with the presumably steadier hand of Anderson at the till. The 35-year-old hasn't posted a passer rating of 90 or better in a start since December of 2014.

The choice on who to do this week’s opponent scouting report on was certainly a tough one. The Buffalo Bills’ offense is statistically the worst in NFL history up to this point in the season but their defense is loaded with talent. Currently ranking as the third best defense in football, the Bills have many contributors such as Trent MurphyKyle WilliamsLorenzo Alexander, former Colt Jerry Hughes, Tre’Davious White, Jordan Poyer, and Micah Hyde.

That is a ton of talent right there but none of those guys intrigued me as much as inside linebacker Matt Milano.
Milano is a very underrated player and is the leader of the Bills defense. In only his second season out of Boston College, Milano has made a name for himself as a sure tackling, coverage linebacker. The former collegiate safety currently has 42 tackles, 6 tackles for a loss, 1 interception, and 1 sack. Last year against the Colts, Milano tallied his career high 11 tackles.

So what makes Milano such a good player on the Bills’ defense? Serving as the Thomas Davis in Head Coach Sean McDermott’s defense, Milano is the best coverage linebacker on the team. He is currently ranked as the 9th best linebacker in all of football according to PFF and has the 9th highest coverage grade among linebackers as well. So why am I worried about Milano for Sunday’s game? Let’s look at some film and find out.

Joe B: 5 things to watch for in Buffalo Bills vs. Indianapolis Colts (10/21/18)

GettyImages-1052142864_1540051263074_100

(WKBW) - One week ago, the Buffalo Bills had a chance at a .500 record through six weeks with a rookie quarterback at the helm. That would have been a tremendous accomplishment given how the season began.
One week later, rookie quarterback Josh Allen suffered a sprained elbow on his throwing arm which will cause him to miss at least this week if not more, all while watching their other young quarterback implode at the end of the game. The Bills lost, bringing their record to 2-4 on the season, and now have the 35-year-old Derek Anderson listed as their starter heading into Week Seven.

What might it all look like, and where are the biggest matchups for the Bills against the Indianapolis Colts?
Five things to watch for when the Bills and Colts face off at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday:

1) Bills strength on offense is also the Colts strength on defense
2) Derek Anderson might need to throw it a bunch
3) Andrew Luck will test the secondary
4) Bills must put pressure on center Ryan Kelly
5) A role on offense for Cam Phillips?

Injury Report

Buffalo
OUT:
QB Josh Allen (right elbow), RB Taiwan Jones (neck)

Indianapolis
OUT: DT Denico Autry (hamstring), TE Jack Doyle (hip), S Clayton Geathers (concussion, neck), WR Ryan Grant (ankle), RB Robert Turbin (shoulder)

QUESTIONABLE: CB Arthur Maulet (hip), CB Chris Milton (hamstring), TE Erik Swoope (knee)

Bills Projected Inactives: QB Josh Allen, RB Taiwan Jones, T Conor McDermott, G Wyatt Teller, G Ike Boettger, CB Ryan Lewis, CB Dontae Johnson

- After getting burned by special teams last week, I’m anticipating a bit over an over-correction to get Julian Stanford, who has received 70.41-percent of special teams snaps in games the Bills have made him active. With Rafael Bush a bit healthier and having the ability to play nickel corner in a pinch, the Bills can feel comfortable in making both Ryan Lewis and Dontae Johnson inactive to try and get their special teams back on track.

Prediction: Colts over Bills
