Why are people betting so much on the Browns this year?

I dont get it. We just watched them. I do think their defense has a chance to be elite with Garrett and the linebackers - but they have Tyrod and look what we did to him after that first touchdown drive. Also, they still have Hue Jackson. One way I could reconcile it is that the rest of the division is expected to be real ****ty (we play one game against the division - Ravens week 1). The only other way is Hue is fired early and Tyrod demoted.

In fact, Las Vegas sports books are seeing a steady stream of bets on the Browns to get to the Super Bowl.

There are more bets on the Browns to win the AFC North than the other three teams combined,” a sportsbook manager for Caesars Palace told ESPN. “Only the Raiders and Steelers have more bets to win the AFC [than the Browns]. The public likes the Browns, and I’m not sure why.”

Browns were 0-16 last season.

There were four teams tied for two Wild Card spots.  The Titans had the best conference record, and so got the top Wild Card spot.  The Chargers had the worst, and were eliminated.  That left Buffalo and Baltimore tied at 9-7 with identical conference records.  Next tiebreaker was strength of victory.  Basically add together the final win totals of all nine teams beaten.  Higher total gets in.  Two of the Ravens victories were against the Browns, so two of the nine wins contributed nothing to the Ravens' tiebreaker.  The fact that two of the Ravens' wins were against Cleveland helped propel the Bills into that playoff spot.

While this argument is, on paper, sound - you are replacing a Ravens victory over the Browns with a Ravens victory over someone else. I think the post you are responding to says Ravens would not even have been at 9-7 if the Browns had beaten them once.

Good points.  What I'm saying is that all 3 of the other teams in that Division has been getting a big advantage in playing the Browns

over the last decade or more.

Now just to throw this out there.  Titans, Chargers and Ravens (twice) all beat Cleveland last year.

Oh, I get you.  Wasn't saying you were wrong, just that it was ironic that the two Cleveland wins/strength of victory came back to bite the Ravens in the rear. ?

Because there's a sucker born every minute.

The thing is that the Browns have been favored by the "Sharps" (professional bettors) for the last two seasons.  It's not just the suckers backing them.

Maybe it's their collection of high draft picks or the large point spreads in the game, or that they'll give the Steelers a tough game every other season, but betting on the Browns defies explanation.

This season looks like their coaching staff is dysfunctional and they'll have an idiotic QB controversy. I bet them under 5 and 1/2 games in Vegas, and would have taken the under if the line was  4 and 1/2.

Honestly, if they would have gone Saquon and Chubb at 1 and 4, and got Teddy Bridgewater in the offseason with a new young head coach instead of Hue, the Browns would be a freaking powerhouse.   People forget Teddy had 3,200 passing yards and a nice 65% completion percentage an only 9 picks in his Blair Walsh Killed playoff run season.  He still has a big upside and has been showing it in camp.

Instead they have one less 3rd round pick from Tyrod trade, a pretty weak HC, and a qb who has a proven ceiling.   They say Dorsey knows what he's doing, but I dunno man

Yeh sharp $$ was on Browns because last two years their lines were always super high to get action. This year everyone likes them and the sharp money is going the other way.

Vegas makes their money on the public being wrong. The sharps just collect on the opportunities when there's room, Vegas gets their juice, and the public always loses. That's why I believe the Browns are a sucker bet this year.

CAUSE THEY HAVE JOSH GORDON. Tyrod, Baker, doesn't matter. Team's gonna eat. Hue gonna suck, Tyrod gonna be a game manager, Baker a wildcard, don't matter. Josh Gordon will make that offense chug. And if the defense is elite as you say. They're gonna be good.

There is no way I would bet on a Hue Jackson led team

Yeah, after watching hard knocks and then seeing McD lead his team, it's hard to think Hue isn't over his head.

Passing the buck on Coleman asking him why he wasn't starting was a huge mistake by Hue.   Unbelievable to me.        "Ask Todd Haley (the OC) he said"

McD would have seen the teachable moment, sat him down and said "well Corey, tell me why you think he's got you running with the two's"   "What can you do better"  "Are you willing to work even harder to be a starter, because it's going to take more from you.  Are you up for the challenge?"   blah blah.    huge opportunity to motivate a player that frankly could fill the Goodwin role for Tyrod, which came in handy a few times for some huge TD's.

Instead he's gone and they have nothing for him except a small amount more cap space.   Bad leadership.

Browns, i guess, are the sad distant cousin of the Bills, rust belt misery and bad teams for most of the last 50 years?

older fans in Buffalo and surroundings watched the Browns on TV during the glory years of the early 1960s, maybe it is still in them?

I mean.. until the Bills are on hard knocks.. how exactly do you know McD "would have seen the teachable moment". Love him, but he doesn't seem to care for his underachievers one bit.

....a bit confusing....if I take you screen name and follow it up with "Peterman is STILL on the roster and definitely in the QB competition, where did I go wrong with your statement?...

I was replying to some dude putting words into McD's mouth.

McD would have seen the teachable moment, sat him down and said "well Corey, tell me why you think he's got you running with the two's"   "What can you do better"  "Are you willing to work even harder to be a starter, because it's going to take more from you.  Are you up for the challenge?"

McD to Dareus: "How's it going buddy? Why do you think you're in the doghouse? What can you do to get better? are you up for the challenge? cause I want TO TRADE YOU FOR A HIGH PICK"

Not saying it's good or bad.. but McD literally does the exact same thing and ships players for high draft picks. So it's more about the "WELL MCD WOULD HAVE DONE THAT BETTER CAUSE COREY COLEMAN IS STILL YOUNG AND MCD NEVER TRADES YOUNG PLAYERS, HE NURTURES THEM."

Also I don't figure Peterman is in the QB conversation. He's grooming for a backup. Fine by me, he could be an okay back up (I hope. I love it when my screen name starts conversations).

...if, IF Peterman eventually ended up as the next Frank Reich sitting by the bullpen phone (sure he'd love to be an NFL starter), bet your twin cheeks I'd take it......
