WIDE LEFT Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 There are basically two types of defensive philosophies in the NFL - Wade Philips/Jim Schwartz defenses are short on disguise and emphasize simplicity so that their players can execute without having to think too much. Easier for QB to dissect. Then there is the Rex Ryan/Mangini style, emphasizing post snap disguise/complexity. Tougher on QB to dissect, but requiring more thought/execution from D players. But a look at today's game and recent games demonstrates that Rex's defensive schemes are not confusing opposing QBs. So we are getting the worst of both worlds, a defense that confuses its own players more than it does opposing QBs. Exactly what Russel Wilson said when evaluating Bills defense. Rex has much to answer for. His schemes appear to be obsolete. How often did Carr look confused today?

One step and throw it, or blind splash play.Gilmore is not the guy for this. 3 and outs don't help a pass rush that's already limited. Preston Brown punches above his weight due to the system. Rex dares other QBs to beat him and they routinely do. Rex also decided playing QB in the NFL is hard, so the Bills just won't do it.

Dr.Sack Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Lots of blame to go around. What I find most disturbing is a defense that gives up so many points. Look at our losses and you'll see a disturbing trend.

Rex scheme is f*cked. 2009 was a long time ago........rules favor the passing game even more now and the amount of time coaches get with players to teach them complexities has been greatly decreased. We are at the end of year 2 and the mental errors are still coming in waves.

4merper4mer Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 It's not just how bad it makes the players look on the field. It also screws our replenishing in the draft. This year's draft saw the first 3 picks: 1. An injured guy from Clemson that most agree has strong potential and 1st round talent. He has been mostly invisible thus far. He replaced a perennial All Pro that similarly disappeared one year earlier. 2. A "throwback" LB that had a great college career and got heavily passed over in the draft because he doesn't fit in the NFL. He got an unfortunate injury. BTW, by "throwback" I think they mean slow. 3. Another DL.. This time the guys college coach was on the draft broadcast and had to be really careful not to call it a bad pick. This year we have a disappearing all pro CB to replace. We have an aging DL to replace. We have a screaming need at safety. We can draft O in the 4th, 6th, and 7th.
