4 reasons the Bills should try and sign Dwight Freeney

Recommended Posts

It's pretty obvious at this point but especially with Shaq missing time the Bills defense could use another pass-rusher. Former Syracuse Orange standout Dwight Freeney is still available and would be a good fit IMO. What does everyone think about GMDW making a move like this?

Is now a good time to discuss what Shaq's role in Rex's defense will be?

I get the sense that the presumption of him being a pass-rush specialist is setting up a lot of Bills fans for disappointment/misappropriated critique.

Probably not in the Dwight Freeney thread.

Probably not in the Dwight Freeney thread.

If Dwight Freeney--the pass rush specialist--is being thought of as a stop gap until Shaq gets healthy, then it's a perfect time to discuss since--from what I gather--Shaq will be doing nothing at all like what Freeney does/has.

You're probably better off starting a new thread than twisting this one into a tangential point.

i think they would play different roles in this D. Freeney is strictly a low-snap, situational pass rusher now. Shaq will play the role that Mario was supposed to play. However, I do think Freeney can help this team with or without Shaq missing some time.

On thing I have heard (don't know how accurate) is that freeney and Hughes didn't have the best relationship in Indy. So that may play into whether the Bills consider this player to be a benefit or not.

I don't know if I'm as confident as you that he has some in the tank. 8 sacks in 11 games last year was impressive, though.

Sounds like a good idea, but Freeney might not be thinking it's so great, given that he will likely lose playtime to a rookie part way through the season.

My guess is he would consider other offers well before this one, so perhaps if he's still available around training camp time, he might consider it.

The two schools of thought may be simplified with comparing Freeney with Biermann. Pass rusher to edge setting run strong player.

Dwight has one more year in him for sure, he said so !
The other guy is probably looking for a couple year contract.

just guessing, though.

So do the Bills want to patch a hole of sorts, or invest in a longer term quiet lunchpail fellow ?

I would like to reiterate some folks here sold me on Biermann as a Bill before the draft. I have not changed my mind on that.

PS I have to think that the Hughes Freeney thing would be a non issue at this point?

This is the kind of inside info that makes this forum great

  5. Dwight Freeney played Kallage Football at Syracuse University

So there ya have it, in a nutshell. "The 4 reasons The Bills should try and sign Dwight Freeney".

I think Freeney makes a lot of sense. We're not looking for a guy for the base defense snaps, Manny can cover those 30-40% of snaps easily.

Where Freeney makes an impact is in sub packages. Manny can't get after the QB, the rest of the roster options haven't got any pass rush production to speak of in the NFL.

Even if it's only a 4-5 week rental in terms of impact, it's worth it. After Shaq comes back, Freeney can still rotate in for certain packages and personnel groups for the rest of 2016.

I am a supporter of the Dwight idea as well.

Shaq is a complete OLB with both run stopping and pass rushing capabilities. We lose that with him gone, which leaves us with Manny, and Ik as the other edge rushers. Manny can cover, Ik can bull rush, but neither is a decent pass rusher.

That's where Dwight can come in and fill the void. Now if he can't get along with Jerry, then I don't know where the coaching staff would go unless they believe an up and coming player on our roster will rise to the challenge.

Personally, I'd give him $800k to bring in a guy with a ring, several pro bowls, and attitude, and about an 1/8 of a tank of gas left. A guy like this could make a defense better just by him being there, and I definitely don't see him being a distraction with Jerry.
