He was convicted of: accepting an illegal gratuity, aiding and abetting in the obstruction of a congressional inquiry, and ordering the destruction of documents. Or as Hillary calls it: Tuesday. (The corporate entities are slightly byzantine; suffice to say that Iran owned 40% of a Franco-Iranian program, which gave it a 10% stake in a European program). After the Iranian Revolution, France stopped providing uranium to Iran under the program, and didn't return Iran's investment (about $1.2B). In response, Iran started taking hostages and assassinating people via terrorist proxies to put pressure on France to return the investment. The first few kidnappings, France negotiated their release, including some payment on the outstanding investment. Iran stopped the assassinations then, when they realized they can't ransom a body and kidnapping was a lot more lucrative. Kidnappings went way up after that. Not on the main landing page. From WSJ: Justice Department Officials Raised Objections on U.S. Cash Payment to Iran Senior Justice Department officials objected to sending a plane loaded with cash to Tehran at the same time that Iran released four imprisoned Americans, but their objections were overruled by the State Department, according to people familiar with the discussions.
