I say as far as competence goes, Roger has a lead, ever so slightly. His job is to make sure that the owners make money. And despite the issues with player safety, off field issues, etc. Say what you will about how he handles them, somehow the NFL continues to grow, therefore he technically does his job more effectively.

I never thought I'd say it but Bettman is probably better at his job. You have to work harder to sell hockey in the US. A monkey could run the NFL and not have as many screw ups than Goodell. He is one of the most incompetent people at his job. If he worked at McDonalds, he would have been fired a long one ago.

Wow, this shouldn't even be close.

Goodell has taken every face punch for Terry and the other 31 of Roger's overlords. They hide in the Star Chamber laughing at all of us screaming at the Commissioner as they chart their valuation's straight up rise. Goodell has been the face of the league that, despite unprecedented and endless criticism it has endured for much of his tenure, continues to increase it's TV domination and simply print money.

While the NFL has lapped every other pro sport (in this country, where we have more than one pro sport) in popularity, the NHL has been relegated to obscurity under Bettman, who is to most sports fans, non-existent.

Given what they are asked to do by their employers (push the brand, help make mountains of cash, take all of the punches), Goodell may be the greatest Commissioner ever.

His job is to make money for the owners, which he's been doing quite well. Bettman on the other hand, has had two half season, and a full season cancelled under his watch. Goodell has had one lockout, that lasted two weeks, and not even a single pre-season game was missed.

Who couldn't make money for the NFL? Bettman isn't good but his job is much harder. Hockey is barely a blimp on the radar in most cities. A crappy NFL game will destroy the Stanley cup finals in the US.

Goodell has had the concussion situation, deflategate, bounty gate and handled them all terrible. He is the most unqualified person at his job.

None of those situations mattered and no one pointed a finger at the owners. They were handled fine.

Exactly. The concussion stuff began long before Goodell was in charge...I mean Commissioner. Bountygate was bungled but whatever--who really cared except the 50,000 Saints fans in the world?. Deflategate is now a colossal joke that everyone (except some here) has forgotten about completely.

Goodell is the perfect man for this job---a real company man, not an outsider. The owners love him because it's not their faces we see at the podium when the crap hits the fan. Ask Pegula what he thinks of his minion Goodell.

The owners love Goodell. He has the NFL up to over $9 bil / yr and the CBA is very favorable to both sides. He's working on increasing the tV revenue with an expansion of TNF to the whole season on a network, and the Yahoo OUS potential contract will make even more money. if he sells a third wild card team in each conference, or even moreso, a 17 game season with less pre-season games, and he makes the league even more money.

The owners care less about Ray Rice stuff, than they do about the almighty dollar and i have no problem with it. It's sports entertainment. That's his job. He's not going anywhere.

Whoops forgot about Rice. Another amazing job by Goodell.

It's hilarious that people give him credit for making the NFL money. What a hard job that is. No one watched football before Goodell.

Bettman ruined hockey, a sport that was on the way up in the early 90s. There isn't even a question as to who is better at their job. Goodell wins by default.

Yep. This thread is unfair. Bettman is one of the worst people in sports.

He inherited a sport with the perfect number of teams in the right cities with high scoring and presence on ESPN... and he promptly lowered scoring, threw hockey in cities that don't deserve it, and signed the league's US TV deal to the Outdoor Life Network.

It's hilarious because you don't understand the point being made. He has not made them money, he has allowed them to make tons of money unfettered by the pop culture "controversy" of the day.

You also don't understand that each and every one of those "scandals" (which few barely remember even now) kept the NFL on the front page of every news and sports website and TV program for months and months year round while every other sport struggles to get anyone to notice their non-playoff programming. Every year, more than 80% of the most watched TV programs are NFL games.

Since Goodell took over from potted plant Tagliabu, the valuation of NFL teams has skyrocketed mainly due to the TV contracts he was key in negotiating--those alone resulted in a 60% increase in team revenues....60%! He united the owners after the 2006 CBA and set the scene for the total subjugation of the NFLPA in the next CBA. League revenue increased from 6 billion to 10 billion in just the 9 years since he has been the commissioner.

Bettman has taken the dying NHL and smothered it with a pillow.

If you can't understand why Goodell is the ultimate Commissioner, then you don't know what a Commissioner is or is supposed to do.

Goodell. Hands down!! But, Bettman is no good at anything IMO.

Bettman ruined hockey, a sport that was on the way up in the early 90s. There isn't even a question as to who is better at their job. Goodell wins by default.

Agreed Bettman ruined hockey. I was die hard since I was born till 2004. I have watched about 20 games since. He is a tiny, little man!

His job is to make money for the owners, which he's been doing quite well. Bettman on the other hand, has had two half season, and a full season cancelled under his watch. Goodell has had one lockout, that lasted two weeks, and not even a single pre-season game was missed.

Totally agree!!
