MMQB: The Officiating Crisis: Worse than Ever?

All I want is for defensive backfield calls to be challenged. Bad calls in that area cost teams games all of the time.

Don't we all. The most dubious of all calls. Got any suggestions? It's a complete mess, but I don't know what can be done about it as pushing/shoving/nudging happen all the time and 'sometimes' its called, often times not..

3 challenges to coaches, one of which can be a penalty challenge. Will it lengthen the game? Not if they cut back on 30-60 seconds of Viagra ads to compensate.

hmmm.. I see a Pandora's box with that one. 'Upon further review, Defensive player did NOT interfere. (Home crowd roars approval) However, review shows defender DID make contact after 5 yrds, 5 yards, automatic 1st Down..' (batteries fly from the stands...)

The on field officiating crews will get help from NFL HQ in New York during the playoffs.

NFL announces adjustment to playoff officiating procedures

NFL clubs were notified today that the NFL Competition Committee has unanimously recommended, and Commissioner Roger Goodell has approved, a limited adjustment to officiating procedures for the 2015 playoffs. The change permits communication between the referee and NFL Vice President of Officiating Dean Blandino -- based in the league's officiating headquarters in New York -- regarding the correct application of rules in specific situations not currently covered by the instant replay rule.

The specific language of the approved change states:

For the 2015 Postseason, consultation may occur between the Referee and the VP of Officiating or his designee located in the league's officiating headquarters in New York regarding the correct application of playing rules. In addition to the VP of Officiating's current role in Instant Replay, this consultation will only include the appropriate assessment of penalty yardage, the proper administration of the game clock, the correct down, or any other administrative matter not currently reviewable.

This will not include the ability to call or change a foul, or otherwise become involved in on-field judgment calls that are not subject to the current Instant Replay system.

"The committee feels strongly that giving the referee and Dean the ability to consult with each other in certain situations beyond instant replay will further support officiating in the playoffs," said NFL Competition Committee Chairman Rich McKay. "The officials do a very difficult job exceedingly well, and we think this adjustment in the playoffs will make them even better."

Great idea. Lengthening the game by a few minutes (even 10 or 15 mins) is nothing compared to what a bad call can do to a team or game. With the technology that is available now, this type of move is a no-brainer, IMO.

I watched the Dean Blandino clip for this week just now. He specifically mentions the Bills-Eagles non-call on offensive pass interference as being correct because the contact between the receiver and Corey Graham happened at the same time as the catch. I was able to stop that playback with a picture showing the receiver hitting Graham while the ball was in the air. By Blandino's explanation, that should have been OPI.

If someone can tell me how to do a screen capture of this, I'll post it. Or you can do it yourself. It's at the 3:01 mark of the clip. You need to start and stop repeatedly to get the image showing the foul, but with some patience you can do it.

Simplify the rules, much of the complication is the NFLs insistence on always promoting the passing game. If they want to help the passing game' change to one foot in like college and simplify the catch rule. Many balls that common sense say are a catch and would have been in the past are now ruled incomplete.

I'm not sure about the full-time ref solving much. Unlike other pro sports, football is a once a week thing. I'd like to see proof that making them full-time would improve performance.

Adding an 8th official might help like it has in the NHL. And change the positioning as well.

I'm biased about NHL refs being the best. But, they come up through the minors and have experience that is beneficial to understanding their impact on the game and game situations. For example, score tied less than a minute to play, they use judgement not to make a marginal call from the other side of the ice. This allows for the game to be decided by the players not the refs, which is ultimately the problem.

The problem is the NFL keeps trying to evolve the game when it wasn't broken. The new HD views is complicating things as we know about more bad calls now than years ago. These guys move so fast it is impossible to get it all right.

I feel for these refs as they are in a tough spot, but at least they are handsomely compensated for part time work.

Here is my thought. You have your officials in the field. You have one in the booth that reviews any penalty for example on a third down or any penalty in the secondary that results in an automatic first down. The official in the booth will buzz down to confirm the call on the field or indicate there was no penalty and the flag should be picked up. Not 100% how you set all the criteria for what is reviewable, however the individual in the booth that has access to the replay can confirm if the flag thrown should be enforced or not.
