Just play him.

All this other stuff is meaningless. Can you imagine if Jim Kelly had to deal with Marv telling him how to live his life off the field back in his debauched heyday?? Michael Irving caught in just a fur coat surrounded by hookers and a pile of coke? The 70's Raiders? Joe Namath--he was idolized for living the life.

You're naming HoFers. Guys who produce on the field don't get treated the same as other players.

And it's not a matter of morals, they are trying the only thing that has a chance of making their investment pay off. Had Manziel went out there prepared and lit the world on fire last year the team wouldn't be nearly as concerned. They'd let him do whatever he wanted as long as he produced and didn't embarrass the organization. But it's the exact opposite.

At this time Manziel seems more interested in partying and getting his picture taken than taking his career seriously. They are trying to get this investment to mature and they obviously believe that the only way left to do that is to show him he has to take his career seriously and it has to be the most important thing to him. Anything less and they won't let him get on the field. Until he does that they won't give him a chance because they saw last year what happened when they put him in there unprepared.

I actually applaud them for staying the course despite heavy fan pressure. I don't think it will work as I think it was a bad draft pick but it's pretty much the only way for them to salvage this situation.

Manziel couldn't have handled his professional career worse. He's a clown who didn't put in the time last season. This time around he went off and did exactly what he told the team hierarchy what he would not do during his off week. He then got his buds to lie about when the latest vid was shot.

Other than cutting him what do you want Pettine to do?

I think Pettine is a dead man walking at this point. The GM might be toast as well.

Wow....

See ya Pettine

it is over for Johnny in Cleveland whether Pettine is here or not. This was expected and looked at as a positive move by him because they don't care to see Manziel play anymore. No one needs to see "what he has" because he isn't putting the work in or have the mindset to be a professional QB at this time. Someone else may take a chance on him but I believe the Browns will part ways with him in the offseason. Edited by YoloinOhio

Very good point!

Every Browns starting quarterback since 1999 is listed on the back of the saddest NFL jersey in Cleveland.

Wow thats so sad

This actually helps the Bills.

If you recall Pettine was their last option. But I disagree with you. This falls completely on Manziel. Spoiled man-child.

I do recall. I say he's the one they just had to hire because they are the Browns.

So because he hasn't produced yet, he has to follow different rules for what he does off the field in his free time? If Gronk was sat down every time he was filmed with a porn star, at a kegger, partying the night away, etc, would he "produce"?

How is he supposed to produce if he keeps getting benched for violating a confused HC's off field rules for him? When he has played, he has "produced" at least as well as McCown has this year. How has Maziel's waving a bottle of champagne (after finishing it off, no doubt) hurt his "production"?

Manziel certainly authored his own demise on that team, but the Browns, and Pettine in particular, created this circus. They created this "oh my God, Johnny has again been caught on video partying after we told him to stop. Gonna have to bench him..again! Right everyone? I mean, right??"

If JM can't answer the bell because he's hung over or whatever, then yeah, bench him. But if he's your first round pick and is ready to play, you play him until you are certain he's no better than your other guy. Benching for nonfootball reasons where he broke no laws and harmed no one only makes you and your sad organization look even dumber than everyone already is convinced you are.

If Davis goes out there and gets destroyed and stinks it up, Pettine is going to go back to JM. None of this had to happen.

they actually didn't bench him for partying. They benched him because he lied to them that the video was old.

@MaryKayCabot: First reported here Wed. that #Browns Manziel lied to Pett about his weekend partying -- and continued it in C-bus https://t.co/3ioxh9cVsY

They also asked him to stay around the team facility during the bye week, but he chose to engage in his extracurricular activities instead and then lied about it. In addition to not having any long term NFL viability on the field, he's a flawed, self interested, untrustworthy individual off the field who's not worth the headache of dealing with him.

And tried to get his friends to lie too. I mean, this is professional sports not junior high.

The official demotion, per FOX Sports Jay Glazer, came because Manziel lied to the Cleveland Browns by stating that it was an old video and because he tried to get his friends to lie and cover up for him

Pettine said there would be zero tolerance policy over the bye week for any shenanigans and he had *just* been handed the starting job for the season. Most professionals would spend that extra time doing everything they can to prepare for that role. He went on a 3 day bender. Sad.

Yeah, he lied. Because he knew he would be benched otherwise. None of this changes the point I was making. If Pettine just said show up ready to practice and ready to play, none of this junior high stuff would have happened. I mean, this is an awful team and coaching staff...what did Pettine have to lose by just playing him weekly?

I mentioned Namath earlier because he wasn't lighting the league on fire his second year either (under 50%, 19 TDs/27 ints, 6 wins), yet Weeb never cared about the All Bowl level partying that Namath was openly doing. He made Manziel look like a choir boy. The press in fact lionized Namath for the same stuff; they got a huge kick out of it. Obviously Namath had a different personality than JM, but the point is that no coach was ever going to bench a player for "I better not catch you partying again" nonsense.

Since when does an NFL QB have to be told to get ready?

I have no idea what Manziel is like in practice, etc. Is he a hard worker? Does he prepare? Does he know the offense? What about Davis? Can the coaches give Davis more plays and an NFL caliber gameplan? We don't know. There is clearly pressure to play 1st round QB picks. I've read a lot of it on this board wrt playing EJM. And sometimes I wonder if GMs/owners even listen to their coaches. Jerry Jones marveled and gushed at the spirals Weeden threw in shorts, but it turned out he was the QB the Browns drafted after all.

They LOVE Austin Davis. I don't think they expect him to be their franchise QB but he's everything they want in the film room, practice, etc. that is why they signed him to an extension in September when they have McCown, Manziel, and Connor shaw on the team. Davis isn't going anywhere. Manziel had no future with the team and no reason to play him.

Isn't that THE problem?!!?!

Johnny Kegger Didn't show up on time and occasionally with a huge hangover.

Little Johnny Boy needs to grow up before he's given another chance. Well unless Jerry Jones trades for him.

As far as I know they didn't have to. I meant that Petttine should have just told him those were his only rules, like HC's have been doing for decades.

Has anyone said that this benching was for poor performance on the field or in the facility? 3 weeks ago McCown (for sucking as QB, not for some minor injury) was benched and Manziel was named starter...for the rest of the season! They would do that if he didn't prepare or practice? Pettine was gushing about JM when he made that announcement.

Pettine is a goof.
