September Movies: Black Mass, Everest, The Visit, The Intern

With schools and football starting again, Hollywood studios take a break from the big budget action movies of the summer and bring us smaller & more serious stories, as the month of September starts the so-called Adult season of movies. There will be a little bit of something for everyone this month and maybe some early Oscar hopefuls that will be warming up for end of the year honors.

 

Johnny Depp stars in "Black Mass". The true story of Whitey Bulger, the brother of a state senator and the most infamous violent criminal in the history of South Boston, who became an FBI informant to take down a Mafia family invading his turf. Also starring, Benedict Cumberbatch, Dakota Johnson, Joel Edgerton & Kevin Bacon.

 

In "Everest", A climbing expedition on Mt. Everest is devastated by a severe snow storm. Starring Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Robin Wright, Emily Watson, Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington & Jake Gyllenhaal.

 

M.Night Shyamalan directs, "The Visit". A single mother finds that things in her family's life go very wrong after her two young children visit their grandparents. Starring Olivia DeJonge, Ed Oxenbould, Deanna Dunagan & Peter McRobbie.

 

Anne Hathaway & Robert DeNiro star in, "The Intern". 70-year-old widower Ben Whittaker has discovered that retirement isn't all it's cracked up to be. Seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin. Also starring Rene Russo & Nat Wolff

 

Hoping to become a significant franchise, we get "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials". After having escaped the Maze, the Gladers now face a new set of challenges on the open roads of a desolate landscape filled with unimaginable obstacles. Starring Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster & Giancarlo Esposito.

 

In "Hotel Transylvania 2", Dracula and his friends try to bring out the monster in his half human, half vampire grandson in order to keep Mavis from leaving the hotel. Starring the voices of Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez & Kevin James.

 

Andrew Garfield & Michael Shannon star in "99 Homes". A father struggles to get back the home that his family was evicted from by working for the greedy real estate broker who's the source of his frustration. Also starring Laura Dern & Clancy Brown.

 

In "Captive", A single mother struggling with drug addiction is taken hostage in her own apartment by a man on the run after breaking out of jail and murdering the judge assigned to his case. Starring Kate Mara, David Oyelowo, Mimi Rogers & Michael Kenneth Williams.

 

In "The Perfect Guy", After breaking up with her boyfriend, a professional woman gets involved with a man who seems almost too good to be true. Starring Sanaa Lathan, Michael Ealy, Morris Chestnut & L. Scott Caldwell.

 

Finally, in "The Transporter Refueled", In the south of France, former special-ops mercenary Frank Martin enters into a game of chess with a femme-fatale and her three sidekicks who are looking for revenge against a sinister Russian kingpin. Starring Ed Skrein, Loan Chabanol & Ray Stevenson.

My wife has been wanting to see "captive" and I think "the intern" could be a really well done movie, in light of the previews I have seen and the cast.

 

I have also heard great things about "the visit" and m. Night making a comeback-- which would be great.

Such a shame. That is a really good book-- probably in my top-10 favorites. Krakauer was basically along for the trek to do an article on mountain climbing, and got caught up in a deadly climb, with at least 2 or 3 people dying near the peak. So, he had firsthand knowledge of everything.

Yes, from what I've heard.

 

It makes me leery of it. Into Thin Air is a great book, but it's to no small degree a catharsis for Krakauer's survivor's guilt. It's one of the reasons it's such a great book, in fact - his other books I've read lack the same visceral emotion - but it's difficult to translate that to the screen without becoming melodramatic or pandering. And if they don't try to translate it...like Vader said, more spectacle than story.

I can understand that. I'm curious to see how it plays. I expect it to be quite excellent as I like JJ's stuff and this is his favorite movie universe so I expect him to do it proud rather than destroy it. But I've also read a lot of articles saying how taxing the production has been between dealing with on set injuries to Disney execs being too hands on for Abrams tastes. Not sure if those are all true but I would see this movie regardless so I'm all in.

Saw the visit the other night, the kids and the granparents were very entertaining. The story has a big twist in it. The lady who plays the granny is wacky as hell. Wife and I enjoyed it.

I do want to see "The Visit" as well.

We saw it opening weekend and it was a fun movie. I thought it was well cast and acted. Both grandparents were perfect and the kids were solid. Very creepy at times and a good sense of humor at the right time.

 

For the creepy factor this one looks good. Probably be a Netflix watch

I saw Black Mass last weekend and found it to be very disappointing. They spent very little time showing us what he was doing outside of randomly killing someone, so you didn't get any feel for what if any kind of power he had around the area. It left me wanting to watch a good mafia movie like Goodfellas.
