that's what he is admitting to saying...some reports are saying they heard him say 'go back to africa'

Piece of crap is pretty standard......most of here say the same thing to Bryan Cox or Brandon Spikes all day long.

Smart wasn't smart and is a tool for going after an old ass man. Come on man.

Gotta tone it down just a little.

Whereas the most persistent rumors are claiming the fan told Smart to "go back to Africa"

They interviewed everyone within an earshot of Orr and none of them heard any racial terms. Doesn't mean it didn't happen but it's something.

Grumble grumble Texans. I wouldn't exactly put everyone within earshot of him on a "credible witness" list either. He's a TTU super-fan. A fixture at their games. He may or may not have some blind support there.

There's a new video with audio where u can clearly hear 'piece of crap'. There's more said but its not clear. I don't hear anything like a racial slur or go back anywhere... Its in a bleacher report story if u want to search for it.

That is why they call them "cagers." I guess it is time to install the cage again, but not for an out of bounds free ball!

you can see him mouth something to the fan and it almost looks like he said "...call me" as if to yell, 'what did you call me?" other comments said it appeared maybe the guy stepped on his fingers....either way, while the ute of today do some stupid things, they don't simply go off like that unless something significant triggers it.

Unless he is paranoid and THOUGHT he heard something bad. It happens all the time.

After reading up a little bit, it appears that this fan, Jeff Orr, is notorious for berating opposing players and other antics. Texas Tech is aware of this. Marcus Smart will likely receive a suspension for this. Should the fan (given that this is not an isolated incident) receive some type of disciplinary action as well? Perhaps banned from the arena for the remainder of the season?

Isn't the whole game of basketball built on this bad behavior? The jawing, trying to throw players off. Come on... Sticks and stones. Where else do fans stand behind players and try to throw their game off? Now the sterilization has turned to harmless words.

3 game suspension for Smart, haven't heard anything from TT about the fan.

Good... The meaning of "Sticks and stones" should be learned.

Spare me the 'can't cross the line' bullsh-- that sports radio will blather about endlessly for the next few days. Where is "the line" for a fully grown man screaming insults and epithets at 19 and 20 year old kids over a f-----g basketball game? I wish Smart had knocked that redneck POS into next week.

Agreed.

Smart has had a rough year. He came back to stillwater this year because he thought his team had a chance to win the NC. At the beginning of the year I would of agreed with him but this last month or so they have had some bad losses. I think they are actually right on the bubble as I am typing. They kicked off the team their backup PG & with Smart being out the next 3 games my guess is that there is a distinct possibility that the Cowboys get left out come selection Sunday. What is worse is I believe Smarts draft stock has dropped this year(he would of been a top 10 pick if he went out last year).

I hope the Dbag Tech fan feels like a real big man antagonizing Smart at the end of the game. Real class thing to do.

All it takes is a good tourney run (if they get in). But you're right. It always seems like you should go pro when you are a hot prospect. Matt Leinart would have been the #1 overall pick if he left after his junior year and made himself a lot more money.

Really ? You guys don't out this 100% on smart ? Piece of crap is heard 300x a game by baseball/hockey players on the regular.

smarts out of control and messing up his draft stock with his immaturity IMO. Young hothead needs to grow up.

That's assuming if it was just piece of crap. If that is all it is, then I agree.

But let's be honest. Some fans go to games and act like idiots. They get all liquored up (Peyton Manning voice) and think because they spent $40 on a ticket, they can do whatever they want. My whole life philosophy don't say/ type something you won't say face to face to a person. There are too many examples of fans thinking they are a part of the game or on the team.

FYI, if I'm ever known as a superfan, someone please put me out of my misery.

I got to agree with biscuit on this one. I mean Smart should of acted a little more mature but come on, fans think they have the right to say stuff to these 20 year old kids that they would never say to their face out on the street. But your right too, Smart has to be for a lack of a better word smarter in a hostile situation.

Smart wouldn't last half an inning at the triple A baseball games in my town.

Those hecklers go hard.

Big difference between college athletics and pro/semi-pro sports IMO. My ex-girlfriend had Syracuse basketball tickets in the first level literally right next to the tunnel. Security was rabid around that area, and if anything other than "playful teasing" was yelled by a fan, security would quickly come and escort the fan(s) out of the Carrier Dome. Seemed to be a zero-tolerance policy. I saw plenty of fans ejected for using foul language or personally attacking players/coaches.

For example, I saw a man get removed because he said to UCONN player Charlie Villanueva "go back to your f&%#ing cave you bald bastard!" For those of you who remember Charlie, he was essentially hairless and had a protruding frontal brow. Classless and abusive comment, and the fan got what he deserved IMO.

I'm not directly comparing the two incidences, but I think fans (especially grown adult fans) should show some restraint when jeering young student athletes.

while if the fan went too far i believe he should face consequences, theres really NOTHING that he could have said that would make it ok for a player to "cross the line." it turns something from being strictly verbal to potentially very explosive and dangerous when the athlete goes back at the heckler. theres nothing good that can come of it. have a coach grab security if you cant tune it out on your own. i know hes young but that should be drilled into (and is drilled into) every player from the start.

hell, i am guilty of having said some pretty awful things outloud towards patrick ewing, granted not anywhere within earshot but it doesn't make it any less hurtful, and I know I am not the only one. As a pasty white guy, i am not going to pretend that being called what is being alleged is simple name calling. it's beyond my comprehension or ability to empathize

I agree. But, when has this not been the case? Basketball, especially, is a little different, there is almost no barrier. Or the least fan/player barrier among the big 4 games. This has to fall 100% on Smart for not having thicker skin.

and for his own safety and well being he needs to know not to engage the fan under any circumstances. i dont care what words are used, a player should never engage the fan. its unacceptable, even if the fan might have said something reprehensible.

Why does the 20 year from the Dallas projects have to be more poised than the 50 year old professional man?

the counter of course being, why dont we expect both of them to act better than they did? its sad hes that rough (or worse) on a 20 year old college basketball player, but the player still absolutely should not put himself in that position.
