Roscoe Parrish could still help special teams

He will come back to the Bills easy. He is worth the spot on the team just for Punt returns.

He can have instant impact on the return game. I have heard enough about growing young players....

Add a playmaker to the team who can make a few big plays now and maybe win a extra game next year.

where the heck is roscoe these days? he was always a player that intrigued me. i felt that jauron didn't use him correctly, and then i thought gailey was starting to use him to the best of his ability but he was hurt off and on. but seriously, where in the crap did this thought come from?

Just happened to watch the Espn 30 for 30 on Jim tressel and Maurice clarett. There were a few highlights of plays roscoe made in the national title game vs ohio state. It brought back memories but I certainly didn't think "we should sign roscoe Parrish"

The thought comes from upgrading a 30th ranked punt return team with a quality player who does not cost anything... He is a very eager free agent and I happen to know he is looking to play again..

how old is roscoe? has he been playing football in any capacity? what kind of shape is he in? i like roscoe quite a bit but is there room on this team for him as a return man when we have a seeming glut of speedy, capable return men? and can he beat out anyone we have at wr right now? and isn't one of the biggest beefs...or beeves...or beefs that we need a big, physical style receiver?

i think if you can come up with a better way for the guys to block and understand the concepts of not holding or blocking in the back, our return guys are just fine.

What did our quality punt returners average per return ? Let''s not blame the coach for lack of punt return yardage. Roscoe holds many records for punt returns in Buffalo.

Get him back, it is a easy minor move that will help win. NOW.

What changed in the return game from this year to last? Was it the returner or the coach?

Did Roscoe even play in the league last year? Was he even a returner? When was last time he was a productive punt returner

What does Roscoe having punt return records for the Bills have to do with what he can do now? Andre Reed has many receiving records and the Bills need a receiver so why not bring him back to

Right. I feel like I've dropped in from Mars.

Goodwin has return ability but this team has no return schemes and no leadership in the STs.

The absolute last piece this team is missing is guys fast and shifty enough to return the ball in the NFL.

I don't talk about special teams much - but I want everyone to read this.

TJ Graham could become a hall of famer, too.

And if you know me at all you know that I fully expect him to be... but really know he won't. We don't need returners we need special teamers. Those special teamers are 2nd string LB's, RB's, CB's and WR's. A big reason we failed there is that our 2nd RB is a starter and doesn't get reps at RB where most teams use the RB. Our CB unit was depleted with injuries and a few releases. These guys make up the brunt of back field return units and we kept having to work them in to starting roles. Our WR's are an odd mix with maybe Woods being our best return unit guy because Goodwin is returning kicks, and the rest are subpar even for special teams. Our LB unit is extremely sloppy and Moats and Bradham can only do so much and with 4 TE's we need to expect them to fill in. Our TE's for this unit - Gragg and Smith are tweedle dee and teedle doh. One is fast, big and hitting while the other is boxy thumping and thick. Both of them should be but are not cornerstones to the unit.

Special teams is overlooked by the average fan and they fail to realize who makes up those teams because they're too busy following the ball. Great units do not have the great returners they have great units. Crossman needs to be put above a fire with thin plank but he needs to be given a unit which can actually gain experience and Marrone took that from him by cutting his units at various points of the season and it was a wonder we didn't have any kicks or punts blocked with the OL that were removed from the team.

Good post, jboyst.

Thanks

I will add this, it also reflects very poorly on Marrone. If Marrone is not committed to putting more emphasis on Special Teams coaching then the results will continue. If he constantly takes CB#4 and gives him reps at CB instead of making time to get him practiced at blocking on returns or covering kicks then is 100% on Marrone. If a practice is 4 hours we need to spend at least 1/4 of that on ST, at the least. Does that sound like a lot? It's not.

Special teams is kickoffs, kick returns, punts, punt return, field goals, and even free kicks when we suffer a safety. Of course, then you have to practice punting from your own end zone. Punt blocking schemes vs. punt returning. Punt teams need to have max protect units and coverage units. Field goals also have trick plays and the rarely but fun to watch fake FG and punt it (really, really surprised that is not used more often, especially by Belicheck. I mean, go to act like you're kicking a field go from the 43 but to a short punt and pin them at the 5...yeah!) Kickoff left, kickoff right, kickoff middle, kickoff squib, kickoff deep, onside kickoff. Punt left, punt right, punt short. Fake punt, fake faking the punt, faking the punts punt.

Special teams...gosh. I once read someone here say it was crap to call it 1/3 of the game. Because by my math that is about 1/2 the game.

These are pretty specific concerns you have. What makes you think Marrone takes away special teams time from players? Is it just the results that make you feel he's doing this or are you just offering that has a possibility?

There has been tidbits of information out of OBD that have led me to believe that he spends a lot of time on miscellaneous things of minor consequence that should be applied elsewhere. Things about where to stand during the national anthem, how to behave on the sideline, and just things of that nature. Special teams should not be this bad.

The other obvious part is that if starting players, Byrd, A.Williams, SJ13 are missing time then more time will be spent on offense and defense to give the fill-in players more time and reps in practice. Also, a large concern that rookies did not show improvement thru the season and seemingly regressed. Instead we kept seeing EJ make the same quick run through of reads and go to the same place. We kept seeing CJ run up the middle then go left (some where some time I will put in a NASCAR joke on that part). We kept seeing TJ Graham run 15 yards, look back seemingly puzzled on where he was and what is going on. Our team looked inept at the understanding of how this team was to work. That's coaching.

Yes, McKelvin all of sudden went from one of the best returners in the NFL to garbage by himself for no reason...

1. Can we all agree special teams are important

2. Can we all agree special teams are not as important as the offensive line

3. Can we all agree that core special team players are back up DB's (decimated by injuries this year) and back up LB's ( the starters aren't that good and the group is the second worst unit on the team)

4. Can we all agree Lee Smith sucks and having a player of his caliber on the team is emblematic of why this team sucks and why they have not been in the playoffs in a decade and a half

Sounds like a lot of baseless speculation on how practice time is allotted to me

How do you figure? We've had people here close with the team and players give this insight. We have had insight from the media on this. We've also had players and staff talk about it as well

Tom Coughlin was 1,000 times worse with Jacksonville and his early years with the Giants...none of it matters if they win games...

So McKelvin had an off year and you think Parrish will do better? McKelvin led the league in PR last year plus he plays CB very well. No thanks to Roscoe.

Yes, a fragile, 32-year-old former punt returner is exactly what the Bills need.

The off-season never disappoints.

Stole my words. I think we should do a poll in May for the worst offseason thread. This would be right up there. It's kind of telling when all these former Bills are out of the league within a year of leaving Buffalo.

Wow... a kick return specialist, if you could call him that at this point in his career, Roscoe Parrish is nowhere near as talented as the great kick returners we already possess. Crossman was the problem in this area. Between Goodwin and Mckelvin we are doing just fine. Preferably I'd like to see CJ utilized in this role as well, were looking to give him the ball in space and this would make sense. No disrespect for Roscoe but he had his shot here, regardless whether he was utilized right or not he doesn't deserve another.
