NoSaint Posted August 12, 2013 Share Posted August 12, 2013 (edited) ill say again, as i think its glossed over in all this meaningless talk of what preseason is - arm strength and accuracy i think makes a bigger difference in the 2 minute drill than an average drive. the windows are tight, the plays need to be big, and you cant live to try again later.... you dont get another drive, and you may not even get another play depending on the clock.... you get one shot at a throw you have to make. fitz, though generally good at managing a game and finding ways to make safe throws, when forced into winning a game really showcased his subpar arm strength. The offensive line was mostly starters or players vying for starting jobs. They weren't transitioning the line much. Especially with a rookie QB making his first start. Sure the starting RB and WR wasn't in. But against the 3rd string D, that doesn't make much of a difference. That drive basically doesn't matter. Perhaps for confidence. Spiderweb Posted August 12, 2013 Share Posted August 12, 2013 The main thing that stood out to me was the consistent accuracy shown by EJ and especially Tuel. It was a pleasure not to have to watch a decent throw followed by one in the dirt and the next into the bleachers. On EJ's TD to Dickerson I thought he thru it too softly. Replay showed decent pace and accuracy. EJ makes it seem effortless. Tuel also looked good. It was great seeing Bills QB's not having to go into a Luis Tiant windup to deliver a ten yard pass. biglukes Posted August 12, 2013 Share Posted August 12, 2013 It sure was against 2nd and 3rd stringers. The Colts pulled their starters in the 1st Q. What matters is how 1st-teams match up with 1st-teams. Manuel will improve, no doubt about it, he needs time and reps, just hope they continue to give them to him. The cause for concern is the D where there were only a couple new players on the starting unit. They were terrible, even against the 2nd team and Hasselbeck, who's what now, almost 40. Yes, and they finished 26th in points allowed and 22nd in yards allowed. I saw nothing yesterday that told us to think that it will be better this season. If anything there should be more questions than answers. The Colt O has hardly any established offensive players, once Wayne came out, and he hardly played, they had none. The second preseason game is usually the one that the starters play the most, so we'll see if there are any signs of hope on the D on Friday, and then the following Thursday. After that the opponent won't field a first team for long even if we do so it won't matter. Then it's for real. Preseasons are good for bad teams from the year before to work out their issues. Good teams just try to get thru the preseason intact. By what stretch of the imagination could the D have been considered terrible? They gave up 13 points. Shutouts are rare for a reason. Even the worst offenses will make some plays over the course of a game. The D was fast, aggressive, and brought an attitude. They generated turnovers, which if you're giving up yards, is big. I mean we couldn't win more then 6 games in a season. So, if you want to bash someone, bash the other horrible QB's that preceded him, and would take a million sacks a game or refuse to throw to our team's wide receivers. Then Fitz lead a great two minute drive against New England to put points on the board before halftime....which helped sparked a second half comeback and finally ended our long string of futility against that franchise. We all crowed that we finally had a coach and quarterback with the courage to lead such a drive with little time on the clock....a few weeks later Fitz was crushed by London Fletcher and was never the same again. Trent Edwards lead the Bills to three exciting come from behind wins...we all marveled that we now had a quarterback with the savvy and skill to lead the Bills in pressure drives....then he was crushed by Adrian Wilson and was never the same again. jp Losman leads the Bills to an exciting come from behind victory over the Texans including and amazing two minute drill culminating in a last second touchdown. We are all excited that we have found a gunslinger quarterback who will lead the Bills on many future comebacks. The next year, Losman gets hurt, Edwards steps in and does better...everyone clammers for Edwards. Losman's confidence seems rattled....and he is never the same again. Drew Bledsoe....too much baggage and history to go into. Rob Johnson steps in and replaces Doug Flutie who had struggled to score all year. He leads a great two minute drive to set up a field goal to beat the Titans....a Titans team, by the way, that went on to shut EVERYONE down that they would face in those playoffs with the greatest show on turf barely scoring enough to beat them (23 pts) and Peyton Mannings Colts scoring no more than Johnson and the Bills......but wait...a throw back on the kickoff run in for a touchdown. Buffalo looses...the next year starts with some injuries, some stupid one yard sacks...and that after the devastating loss destroys Johnson's confidence and he is never the same again.
