Apparently Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders will serve as team captains, along with two NFL.com fantasy users to draft their own pro bowl teams.

Some other notable changes to the game, per the NFL and NFLPA press release:

» Game within the Game: A two-minute warning will be added to the first and third quarters and the ball will change hands after each quarter. This will increase the opportunities for quarterbacks to direct "two-minute drills," which are especially exciting for fans.

» No Kickoffs: The coin toss will determine which team is awarded possession first. The ball will be placed on the 25-yard line at the start of each quarter and after scoring plays.

» Rosters: The rosters will continue to consist of 43 players per squad. The kick return specialist will be replaced by an additional defensive back.

» Cover Two and Press Coverage: The defense will be permitted to play "cover two" and "press" coverage. In previous years, only "man" coverage was permitted, except for goal-line situations.

» Stopping of the Game Clock: Beginning at the two-minute mark of every quarter, if the offense does not gain at least one yard, the clock will stop as if the play were an incomplete pass. This rule will make the team with the ball attempt to gain yardage toward the end of each quarter.

»Game Timing: The game clock will start after an incomplete pass on the signal of the referee, except inside the last two minutes of the first half and the last five minutes of the second half.

» Play Clock: A 35-second/25-second play clock will be adopted instead of the typical 40-second/25-second clock.

» Sacks: The game clock will not stop on quarterback sacks outside of the final two minutes of the game. Currently, the game clock stops in these situations outside of two minutes of the second and fourth quarters.

They really need to figure out a way to make the game "matter".

I'm not sure it will ever matter or needs to. They might was well just name the All Pro players and not play an actual game that is unwatchable. These guys do not need a free trip to Hawaii. Just my opinion.

So true. As voracious as my football appetite is, even I don't bother watching it.

But hey, this game now matters to the two people who help pick the teams.

So what you're saying is the song remains the same.

I actually like most of these changes. If they're going to play it they might as well try some new ideas out.

Matters not IMO. I have no incentive to watch the Pro Bowl. It's simply a non-event with zero appeal for me.

I think the Fantasy Draft will be more fun to watch than the game...

Another win for NFL, huge ratings on Draft Day, and still the same Pro Bowl Ratings... they can't lose. I will still watch both things!

But that's why they're making changes - I'll bet 95% of the hard core football fans dont watch it. I'll flip over to it if there's nothing else on, but I find myself losing interest in it quickly. I don't mind the attempt to make changes, but I just don't want changes that make the game too gimmicky.

forget the game.......risk of injury to great, the biggest superstars find a way to not attend and Super Bowl players are unable.

make it an Awards show where ALL the true Pro Bowlers (no alternates) are recognized. preferably during the off week prior to super bowl where all the media is already assembled.

Even with the changes they announced, the actual game will not be contested at a high enough level that will garner any interest for me. As I said initially, it's a glorified exhibition game with an outcome that is completely meaningless.

Seems ridiculous on its face until you realize this means the league no longer considers this an actual game since they've made up a bunch of playground rules. Hopefully this will put an end to the asinine "how to make the Pro Bowl more relevant" threads.

It's one more step in the right direction of abolishing it altogether. In another 3 years they'll make it a Punt, Pass & Kick contest. Or hopefully, a recreation of the old '70s "Superstars" competition.

Only if they can get raise Joe Frazier from the dead and get him back in the swimming pool. I laughed but also felt so bad for him.
