Although he has thus far survived the wave of firings since the NFL’s regular season ended, Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett is reportedly being pressured by owner Jerry Jones. Jones is pushing Garrett to relinquish play-calling duties, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen (via ProFootballTalk).

Garrett, the former Cowboys quarterback and offensive coordinator, is known as an offensive specialist, while the team hired Monte Kiffin as defensive coordinator this week to replace axed coach Rob Ryan. But Garrett came under fire after Dallas missed the playoffs for the third straight year at 8-8, particularly for his clock management.

Jones also wants Garrett to fire his brother, John, the team’s tight ends coach who is calling around the league in search of other jobs, according to Mortenson.

John Garrett also played at Princeton and participated in Cowboys training camp as a wide receiver in 1988. He came to Dallas as a coach along with his brother in 2007 and also held the title of “passing game coordinator” the last two years.

The move could be Jones’ way of forcing Jason Garrett out, writes PFT’s Mike Florio:

It also could mean that the Princeton-educated Garretts sense that Jones is trying to provoke a showdown that will result in Jason Garrett leaving as the head coach without Jones flat-out firing him. Indeed, it’s one thing for Jones to roll out of bed one morning and decide to make a coaching change. It’s quite another for Jones to want his head coach to make changes and for his coach to resist, creating an impasse that leads to only one logical conclusion.

The Cowboys are 21-19 during Garrett’s tenure as head coach. He replaced the fired Wade Phillips halfway through the 2010 season.

wow, look at our roster prior to Nix coming in- we weren't exactly overflowing with quality. We are still missing the franchise QB although if we go get a number 2 wide reciever and a tight end and IF the defense doesnt give up 40 a game you can win with a Fitzpatrick or Matt Moore type. Who did we pass on who is ripping it up ?

You can't win consistently with Fitz...He has proven that beyond a shadow of a doubt on 3 different teams...It's not all about the Defense, which I admit could be better...But like I've said a million times before around here...Fitz was never good enough, he's not good enough now, and he'll never be good enough...If you think differently, maybe Football is not your thing... The whole QB situation is/was ridiculous

Not only did they refuse to address the QB position for the future, they also refused to bring in a BACKUP that could actually push Fitz

Its like they didnt want to hurt Ryan Fitzpatricks confidence or something

Well, they DID bring in Brad Smith to run the wild "scat"!!!

Because outside of taking a big risk on not much of an upgrade in Dalton, or a HUGE risk in catching lightning in a bottle with Russel Wilson, the Bills havent been in a position to acquire a QB that would be any sort of upgrade to Fitz.

If so, name them.

Ummm...Seen Kaepernick lately?

Do you even have the slightest clue the % of 2nd and 3rd Round Picks that end up being even 3 year starters in the NFL?...

Risk?...

Too funny...Oh and btw...It's the QB Position...It's pretty important... B-)

I like the new direction of the front office so far, not sure what Buddy is actually doing.

Question: How is it that Buddy has gotten a pass with three years of losing, a disaster of coaching choices, and NO NFL starter

at the most important position on the field?

It's not even that the Bills don't have a starting QB, he hasn't even drafted a QB in three (3) years above round 6 or 7?

How is this possible?

I agree. It's a QB League and a GOOD GM would have drafted one maybe ASAP. He should have had that person in 2010 or 2011, but failed. So He get's a pretty weak grade from me...

Nix basically traded up to get a slight, undersized track star who can't catch. No LBs available in 3rd round?

http://www.cbssports...players/1630354

Many LBs, WRs and QBs with much higher prospects were available. Even Russel freakin Wilson was still on the board!! 2012 was a stacked class. Two picks were wasted on a player they could have likely signed undrafted. It really stings.

Where you also one of the MANY around here who blasted nix for picking up Spiller, calling him a bust before the end of last year?

I never said Spiller was a bust, nor did I ever predict he would not do well...I watched CJ in College a ton while I lived in Charlotte NC...Love the kid...Still think it was a stupid move by Nix...The type of move we have come to know as typical Buddy...He's not a team builder...He's not even a GM...He's an old school scout trying to get by as a GM...He's in WAY over his head...What he did with the QB situation in Buffalo is beyond forgiving...How any Buffalo Bills fan can sit and watch Kaepernick, or Wilson, play and still be OK with Buddy or his ridiculously stupid picks of Aaron Williams and TJ Graham is totally, 100%, beyond my comprehension...IMHO, Buddy sucks... B-)

I agree 100%! When Nix came on board, he was touted as our "football guy" & a tremendous evaluator of talent. At that time, I would say most of us on this board knew in our hearts that although Fitz had some good qualities (smart, somewhat mobile, quick release), that he was a career jouneyman back-up. The fact that Graham was the 69th pick in the 2012 draft, & Russel Wilson was the 75th pick speaks volumes. This fact, along with not being able to see what Fitz truly is, was justification for Nix getting the pink slip at the same time Wanny & Chan got theirs. The loyalty to Nix by Russ Brandon puzzles me. The majority of the fans wanted a clean sweep, & rightly so.

Nah, you could see in his 1st pre-season that he had a wiggle and burst like nobody we've had in a while. And I think he's progressed well. But I thought Lynch was OK and we had GAPING holes elsewhere.
