IF there is a "plan" then why can't they extend the lease?

This is THE topic of the week to me, and it's hardly being discussed.

This summer, the county executive said he expected to have the elase done by training camp. Then it was the season. Now, they are going to WORK TOWARDS a 1 year extension.

WTH is going on here? This is VERY concerning.

What happened to this "deal" with some local ownership group to keep the team here? The events of this week seem to suggest that no such deal exists, or if it did maybe Mr. Wilson has decided to sell the team on the open market once he passes. A billion dollars for this team would be a slam dunk on the open market.

I'm worried. Where are all the people with "inside info?"

i totally blame the bills, they want it both ways, they want most of the improvements paid by govt funds, yet refuse to be forthright about a succession plan (if there is one) . brandon's spinning is maddening and the lack of the media not questioning him about it plays right into their hand.

agreed... they seem not to want to make any type of commitment (which makes sense from the team's standpoint IF they truly will be sold to the highest bidder)

i think it stinks! it is bad enough we have been basically hostages over the years, but to have it end this way sucks.. never truly believed they would leave, but it sure seems like they are positioning themselves to do so.. if not, why the big secret then?

Not sure if this is coming from the Bills. I would assume that as part of any deal on the lease and stadium improvements there will be significant financial penalties for a lease termination for, among other things, to cover construction costs. This would be a commitment (of sorts) and would make it more dificult and expensive to move the team in the future.

I really get the feeling that this is all on New York State and, specifically, Cuomo. I don't think he wants to committ the money.

i thought so too, but after reading the NEWS today, sounds like the bills are the one's dragging their feet. i am by no means a cuomo fan, but in this case i happen to believe it is the bills, just trying to squeeze the county and state all they can and exert all the leverage they have, which is really all of it.. nobody but the bills has any leverage..

Of course the team is for sale on the open market once he passes, and the other owners need to approve any sale.

The team is currently valued at just over 800 million. What idiot billionaire or group is going to pay 200 million over market value?

Wait, aren't you the guy who says the state should kick in the money?

I agree that this should be the biggest story regarding the Bills right now. I dont like how this is looking one bit.

that is exactly how i feel, i cannot believe the lack of concern , not just on here, but within the political circles . hopefully somebody steps up, a one year lease does not bode well for the region, but it certainly does for the bills..

Nah. People that pay 25% over market value for things don't become billionaires.

You did see what the Dodgers just went for right? Magic and his partners spent way more than market value. They're out there and in an open bidding war the Bills could easily go for around $1B.

The value of the franchise will increase dramatically if it is moved to another city, such as LA. The current market value is based on the team being in Buffalo (with Buffalo economic realities and an old stadium). In LA, with a new stadium, the value of any franchise could be more than double.

Extending by a year makes alot of sense for the Bills. It keeps their options open. They have an old (and declining health) owner who may not be around in a year or so. Why close the door? Keep it open so when a succession plan happens, they can roll with it and not be bound by some lease.

Folks, have you been to some of the newer stadiums around the league? NY, Dallas, Indy,etc...even Baltimore? I like the Ralph of course but it's dated. The concourses are so narrow, it seems silly and sub-standard after attending games in newer stadiums. I honestly think to ensure the long term viablilty of the Bills, they State & County need to hit a home run and build a new stadium eventually. SOmething downtown or regional,,,with multiple use possibilities. It should have a retractable roof. The Ralph needs a whole lot more than a band aid to make significant improvements.

Two posts by me in the last few months - both of which I was chastised for by those responding in this forum.

1. WHO's YOUR BUDDY? - I boldly stated that the mountains of praise thrown at Nix/Gailey & Co is unearned. Show me the baby I said. How do you all feel about these geniuses running the show now?

Great! - they signed the top defensive FA. Give me a pen and a checkbook to Ralph's account and I could have done the same. Big deal. How about some savvy personnel moves that require strategy and creativity? Hell, just look at this year's draft! Of the 9 draft picks in 2012, 4 are no longer with the team and 1 of them is excess baggage as a kickoff specialist.

For a team that has weaknesses in all categories, that is piss poor planning. The way things look now, kicking specialist Potter may not be needed more than once or twice each Sunday. It's not like we have a Superbowl contender and the competition is too tough to find a slot on the roster. Bills front office grade: D

2. THE LEASE - Word in the press a few months ago was that the lease agreement was imminent and lots of optimism from the TSW crowd. I scoffed. Didn't believe it was that close to being done and would be surprised if it did get done.

I was called a troll and a negative Ned and other unflattering things.

Reality sucks folks. Sorry to always be the one to wake you up from your pipe dreams, but this team is a mess from top to bottom with no end in sight to the futility that begins and ends with Ralph's constant meddling.

There's a reason teams like the Steelers and Ravens can go through 100% attrition with coaching and players over the years and still have competitive teams. There's a reason teams like the Bills seem to bask in mediocrity for years. It all starts at the top.

Do I really care about the lease agreement any more? Nahhhh.

How do the Bills have all the leverage? What if the state just says "no"? What's Ralph going to do?

well, if one reads what is being reported in the media i e: the buffalo news, both the county and state have gone on record as being on board with keeping the bills here. the state will sell bonds to pay for the improvements.in addition, common sense would dictate that the bills are the one's playing hardball and it was stated as such by a cuomo rep in the news today.
