Forget about the Pats* for a minute...

Recommended Posts

Good points from mike in Syracuse. I would just add George Wilson also plays the run very well, and plug up a hole if whoever is running for the jets actually makes the second level.

The Jets are finally going down this year after sweeping us for a couple of years. game 1 shouldn't have that many injuries. We'll see if we can beat them though at home in ga,e 17.

we are in no position to discount the Jets yet.

Maybe the Dolphins.

Totally agree - we have not earned the right to look past anyone. That Jets D is still really tough. Our defense looks tough on paper but I think they will both be tough games. I really do think this is a 8-8 season.

You can't believe in yourself when all you do is fawn over the other guy. We know we can beat these teams. Act like it.

"You may not look like a winning team, but you are one. So play like one...." Brad Pitt as Billy Beane in Moneyball... love that line!

I don't think the Bills are discounting anyone. I think some (possibly the majority) of fans are discounting pretty much everyone but NE*.

I re-read the OP and see where I literally asked a ? about what the Bills are doing so I understand the confusion. I should've clarified about including the fan perspective.

To be more clear, there are two main points I was hoping to spark a discussion about:

1. From a fan's perspective, should we be worried about how the Bills match up against the Pats* as much as how they match up against the Jets?

and

2. By seemingly building a team with an emphasis on stopping Brady and the Pats*, does that hinder the Bills ability to stop a team with an entirely different philosophy (specifically, the Jets)?

or, as I ended the OP:

How do you think the Bills match up against the Jets? Does it matter as much as how the Bills match up against the Pats*?

Why are you discounting the Dolphins?

I was listening to Chris Berman on John Murphy's new show on WGR the other day and I thought he made an interesting point (toward the end of the show) about where the Bills should be aiming their sights.

They didn't dig too deep on this topic but I got to thinking, "Are the Bills putting too much of an emphasis on getting after the Pats* while neglecting a likely more meaningful rival in the Jets?"

The reason I say "more meaningful" is this: Even if the Bills beat NE* twice, NE* still has a good chance to win the AFCE by posting a better overall record. This could lead to the Bills and Jets battling for a Wild Card spot.

The Jets are seemingly going back to their bread-n-butter and gearing up for a ground and pound offense. Does anyone think that they might have a better chance to beat the Bills now that the Bills have devoted so many resources to pass defense? Or is the Bills D just going to be that much better overall so that this is a non-issue?

So, what do you guys think? How do the Bills match up against the Jets? Does it matter as much as how the Bills match up against the Pats*?

If we beat the Pats twice then we'll win the division. There's no chance on earth that the Pats will go 14-0 or even close if we beat them twice. In fact, if we beat them twice, I'd wager that they win no more than 11 games. Not that I see that happening, just sayin'.

^%$^ Pats also have an easier schedule than we do.

We have to play the Niners on the road, they get them at home.

We have Houston on the road too, they have them at home. Except for Baltimore, who will beat them, they don't have any tough road games at all. We also play them twice while they play us twice. Until we prove that we're better than they are, that's easier for them.

I see them being 13-3 again or around there. We won't hit that.

as long as the cheaters have marcia they will be favorites for the division. in whatever world we managed to beat them twice its extremely unlikely we would have to be more worried about the jets at that point

You got that right. And as soon as Marcia's gone we'll see how good Belichick really is because he's sucked all those years without Brady. Brady adds four wins annually easy.

Don't disagree, but that would be unacceptable.

This is the kind of loser mentality Buddy Nix is fighting to get rid of. The attitude in the Bills locker room should be expect to beat everyone. Expect to win. They should be worrying about us.

PTR

i will take exception to that sir!

I am sure they are worrying about us. But we had better respect every team we play. Nothing is a lock with the parity in the NFL these days.

I think the Bills will have the same issues they've had in recent games against the Jets -- inability to sustain offensive drives. The average output in games vs the Jets over the past couple of years has been pretty low.

Hopefully the defensive improvements will allow the Bills to have more short fields, etc. to create scoring chances.

Well, I'm discounting the Fins bc I think they'll suck. I don't think the Bills are.

You're probably right. The point I'm trying to make is that we as fans should be more concerned about the Jets as it seems to me it's more likely that the Bills playoff hopes hinge more on the Jets than the Patriots*. No matter how you slice it, the Pats* are likely going to win the AFCE, and the Bills better make sure they are ahead of the Jets in the Wild Card race.

That's my hope as well. The Jets D, despite finishing in the top 5 overall, dropped in some significant categories, including all the way to 20th in PPG. They're getting older and can't seem to generate a pass rush without their blitz packages leaving them vulnerable to Gailey's quick hit offense.

With the Jets D seemingly on decline, and the Bills O seemingly on the rise, I starting to think the Bills are going to have the edge in this matchup.

Until someone unseats the Patriots as the dominate team in the division, you have to build a ream to beat them.

The only guy brought in that is a 'pass rushing specialist' is Anderson.

Also, if you can get pressure with your front four, it means you have all three linebackers free to play the run.

The line is designed to get pressure with the front four so they can do more behind them.

How about let's not forget about the Pats? Aside from being in our division, they freakin made it to the Superbowl like 4 or 5 times in the past decade... How about we focus on the Pats even more?

A ream or team? Cuz if it's a ream, then we already beat them cuz we win the superbowl on paper...

How is everyone here so sure we will sweep the fins and possibly the jets? We got swept by both teams last year, neither should be ignored. That being said, the Jets are going to be tough this year, our offense does not match up well against there secondary strong defense. They have good enough of a pass rush which was only strengthened through the Coples pick. Our offense has not gotten much better over the offseason, hopefully this year we wont be injured so much though. Fitz may or may not have been incapable of playing with the rib injury, who knows. Let's just hope our revamped defense can take care of business

I agree we can't discount any team, ever, including after we prove we can beat them.

I disagree that our offense does not match up well against their secondary. Stevie is one of the few WR in the league who does well on Revis Island.

The first Jets game was the week after Fitzrib got speared by London Fletcher's helmet. He was quite ineffective, completing <50% of his pass attempts (15 of 31) and we had trouble sustaining offensive drives.

That said, the most striking statistic of the game to me is first downs: the Jets had 24, we had 14.

This suggests to me that the problem wasn't our poor matchup with their secondary but rather the 1-2-3 punch of 1) Fitz injury 2) the D's inability to get the stop against the Jets relatively low octane offense 3) Chan's inability to adjust the O to 1).

The second game, we tied in the 3rd and went ahead in the 4th, only to see their O march back down the field for 7. We get the stop and get the ball back, we win.

Again, the problem wasn't lack of matchup with the Jet's secondary but rather the D running out of "NO! juice" in the 4th quarter.
