Not an awful idea to at least see what the kid can do with the 3rd to last pick in the draft. We could have emulated the Jags, and grabbed a punter in the 3rd... Like all 7th rounders, to make the team he is going to have to do well in camp and hope he does not get caught up in the 'numbers game' where they decide to keep an extra DB or LB. Don't be dismissive of the possibility of Potter improving his accuracy over time like numerous other kickoff specialists have done. It might start with him attempting some 60 yarders and morph into him being our regular kicker. He's not good enough to warrant occupying 2 roster spots for FG kicker Yeah, 81% FG accuracy for his career (83% with the Bills) and only one missed PAT in 363 attempts sucks. Lindell is currently the 27th most accurate FG kicker in NFL history, but his numbers with the Bills alone over the past nine years would move him closer to top 10. Then they could hide him away on the practice squad if they are thinking of eventually replacing Lindell. I'm probably in the minority here but I thought Lindell and the Bills did a great job with the new rule. Consider the Bills had the LOWEST yards per return allowed in the NFL at 20.4 ypr. Not kicking it into the endzone every time actually helped. It made sense to kick it a little short and let the guy run it out and stop him before the 20. Still, Lindell got hurt on a tackle, and if you can save the wear and tear on your coverage units by blasting it through the end zone isn't that a good thing? How many days does EVERY man on the active roster play? At least to start the season (before injuries are a factor) I'd have to think carrying that extra specialist isn't a drain on what's available to the coaches.
