Does Bruce Irvin = Aaron Maybin?

If Seattle is getting crushed by the "experts" for picking a one-trick, pass rushing "specialist" who can't play the run at #15, why we're we crushed for picking Maybin at #11? Was it because the "experts" for whatever reason pegged Maybin as first round material and Irvin as second?

i dont remember it being a total love fest - a lot of people didnt like him, and even more didnt like him given who was on the board.

also, maybin didnt have any off field issues on top of it all.

I remember the Bills getting criticized pretty heavily for the Maybin pick...both here, and nationally.

I am not one of those who thinks that Maybin has saved his career (yet), but I do think he was criminally wasted, by two Bills coaching staffs. There was never any question about his effort, but he just never got to play. For whatever reason, you would think a franchise would owe it to themselves to see a 1st round pick in action a bit more, before cutting ties, even if it was the "previous administration" who picked him.

He not only didn't get to play, but barely dressed for games when Gailey took over...I like Gailey alright, but sometimes I think he is a little too stubborn on some things. It's not like giving Maybin more snaps would have hurt them in the win-loss column...just a very odd situation. It almost sounded like it was more of a personality thing than a talent thing.

Last year, Spiller would get a few carries, look good, and then you wouldn't see him the rest of the game...a couple of times, Chan said "we weren't runnig the ball as well as I would have liked..." or something along those lines...I always wondered what the hell he was talking about.

A lot of the criticism had to do with the fact that they took Maybin, a project, over Orakpo, a sure thing.

Plenty of analysts thought Maybin would develop into an elite pass rusher in a couple of years. I don't think the pick was as bad as Irvin at the time because most people had tagged Maybin with a first round grade. It was just that they skipped the established pass rusher in Orakpo.

One of the craziest things I remember from the time is people making the argument that Orakpo was too strong in the weightroom already, that his strength didn't translate on the field, and that he had maximized his potential and wouldn't ever improve. The argument being that Maybin had all of this upside and room for growth whereas Orakpo was as good as he'd ever be.

That is crazy,... sounds like way overanalysis. I was very surprised when they didn't take Orakpo at the time.

I was thinking more along the lines of Irvin=Aaron Curry, a guy the Hawks just gave up on last year for being a situational LB.

That being said, Irvin has a great motor and rushes the QB as well as anyone in the draft based on everything I have seen on him. It's a changing league, and the NFC West is full of teams (ARI, STL and SFO) exemplifying the pass-first mentality. I, as someone who lives close to Seattle, hope that he succeeds because I'd much rather see an improved product on the field this year when I go to games and their need for a pass rush is strong. Going to their Monday nighter vs. the Packers on the 35 yard line in the 4th row, so I'm hoping to see a difference maker in Irvin up close.

  • 3 weeks later...

I know I'm late to the party but my thoughts exactly!!!

Irvin will shake that, or any, comparison soon enough. The kid is a gamer and has a a motivation not like many others. He's as hard as nails, unlike maybin who talked a big game...i'm sure Maybin put the work in, but he doesn't have that killer/tough guy mentality I think Irvin has...no pun intened.

I cant believe I missed on Maybin so badly......

I pictured Aaron Maybin as one of those freaky fast get past the OT before he got out of his stance type pass rushers that would cause false starts and holding penalties

The problem is....as soon as a gust of wind stopped him he was done.....I mean.....as soon as their was physical contact by a OL Maybin was finished

Even then I thought he would put on weight and become at least a in space aggressive pass rushing linebacker.....but once again.....I dont know if it was bad angles.....the OL giving him a harsh look...I dont know....he just couldnt get to a QB

He was so bad.....SOO BAD....that they wouldn't even let him play special teams.

I have never whiffed on a 1st round pick so badly.....I really thought Maybin could be special.

Many of the so called draft experts loved Mayben, until he was drafted by the Bills... If the Bills had a real defensive coordinator, who knows what his future with Buffalo could have been...

Have you seen him try to run? he looks like a lost kid out there. He was flat out awful and Todd Mcshay doesnt count as an expert

If you have corners that can allow you to scheme more resources on passing downs you can line Maybin up in the "wide-9" and let him use his speed. That's the epitome of one trick pony and exactly what Ryan uses him for. I've yet to see him command a SINGLE double team or otherwise even so much as worry an OC with his presence. It was interesting how teams caught up to him last season. He didn't make the stat sheet over the last four games IIRC. Definitely no sacks. Ryan needs to counter that if he expects to get anothe 6 sacks out of Maybin.

GO BILLS!!!

Yep...2 tackles vs. Miami in the season finale were his only stats in the last 4 games.

There are no sure things in a NFL draft. Maybin was pretty much a top 15 pick across the board. In today's NFL, a specializied pass rusher is worth a 1st rounder.

That said, Irvin is a very shaky character and IMO, I won't have touched him in the 1st round.
