I Have Questions - Please Give Me Answers !!!

It seems as though in respect to one player in particular , i watched something totally different from others that are fans of the Bills .. I will admit that after we signed this player what happened almost immediately after i thought we made a bad decision but what i saw the possibility of in preseason made me think it was a better decision than i thought at first .

If you haven't figured out just who it is i'm talking about by now it's Shawn Merrimen . The flash that i saw in the Chicago game this year & pretty much through out the preseason was what i expected him to be right from the start .

I feel that seeing as he is under contract for this year we need to at least bring him back for OTA's & see what he has got . If with what i have read with his operation and all that his tendon wasn't ruptured he should be good as new (hopefully) . Plus if you look at what Takeo Spikes has done after we let him go because he did rupture the tendon then i don't see how Merriman at his age can miss .

And i would like some of you to answer this for me . From what i watched of the Bills this year our D was doing pretty dam good until Merriman went down , then when we lost Williams & for get it after that !! But while Merriman was on the field (it seemed to me any way) we had some pass rush like we did the year before Schobel retired & as long as we have something that resembles a pass rush we get INT's , FF's & all that good stuff . But when it's gone as it did when Schobel left & then this year when Merriman went on IR our D goes down .

So i don't get it when i read all of these posts or reply's that say Merriman's done , we need to get rid of him blah blah blah !! The guy is still in his 20's he has a great work ethic , is a high motor guy & is a veteran presence in the locker room . The only way i can see to not bring him back is if he comes up lame after a few OTA's then cut him & use his money else where but don't do what the Bills usually do and cut our nose off inspite of our face .. I'm just saying !!

Your Turn !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thread Title: "I have Questions"

Thread Body: Not 1 single question mark...

I have no idea what to answer, but I agree he should be brought into camp. We have nothing to lose and can only gain.

And Merriman is in the same boat: nothing to lose and everything to gain

My only concern is that sometimes a blown achilles tendon can take two years for a complete rehab. He may be able to play after one year, but he won't be comfortable or full strength until the second year. I think that was the case with Takeo Spikes, and everyone thought he was done. I have a coworker who blew out his achilles, and he was in a cast/brace for months, and then was limping around for several months after that. My coworker was almost twice Merriman's age, but the long rehab situation may be something to think about before putting a fork in him. He may, just may, come back and be effective a year or so after you write him off.

I'm with you and would really like to give him one last shot at making our team. It's not like we had anyone step up at that position so what do we have to lose. I do disagree that we looked better with Shawne in the line up. I think we have looked terrible on defense in every game but the KC and Denver game. Shawne displayed some things in pre-season that got me a little excited but I never saw it in the real games. I think he played in the game against the Raiders and Patriots and they went up and down the field on us. I hope he heals and gives us a positive shot in the arm next year.

I certainly think we give Merriman another shot...

I am of the philosophy that until we have someone BETTER than Merriman, and Kelsay for that matter, we need to use them.

However when people say that they think Merriman is "done", I think they are referring to his ability to recover from the unending string of injuries he has suffered since he was a dominant player. Certainly he has yet to prove that.

I do think he is worth the risk though, we simply have no one else on the roster capable of starting at that position. No matter what, we should be drafting young talent for that position though.

If by "blown" you mean completely tore, I don't believe that is the case with Merriman this past year. From what I heard the surgery he had that necessitated his trip to IR was partly preventative in nature; it was something he needed for a while to prevent his achilles from tearing, but he waited (wisely) until the Bills paid him.

Again, not sure if this the case, anyone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Ya but that's what i'm saying his tendon did not blow out so he had the operation to fix what ever was wrong with it before it blew so he should have shorter rehab & COULD come back faster to full strength !!! 0:) 0:)

A quote from Merriman: "I have been advised that it would be in my best interest to undergo surgery as soon as possible in order to prevent a major injury"

Based on this, I would say you are correct, he did not blow out the tendon, and I would assume that he would be able to rehab in a year or less. This is good news in my opinion, because I think he played pretty well for the first few games of the season. I think he knew the difference between when to rush in for the sack or tackle for lost yards, and when it makes sense to stay in position and hold the edge. That comes with experience, and experience will be important for helping the rookie that should be drafted this spring to take over for Merriman in the future.

With the expanded camp roster and his performance based contract I see no reason not to let him come back if he wants to, and is able to.

Sorry, but your avatar should be a fork in a Bills #56 jersey. The guy is DONE. Kaput. Finito. He's always hurt, and he's not getting any younger.

As I understand it, the hoped-for difference here is that Merriman's achilles apparently didn't blow completely, it was just "in danger of rupturing". So the hope is a shorter rehab for the M-man.

I agree with the philosphy that both Merriman and the Bills have nothing to lose and something to gain by bringing him into camp. I also agree that while he wasn't himself, our D seemed better with him in the game at the start of the season - no sacks, but more pressure forcing QB mistakes. I also think he's a guy who knows what it takes to prepare to be a winner and stay in shape during the season, and he's worth having around as a positive influence.

My guess is that he is done.

I tend to believe that his previous rehabilitation was fueled by the use of PED's. He has a history of suspension for PED's and the truth of the matter is that he was caught with viles of an unknown substance at that border stop this summer. The guy who put the cuffs on him is a 30+ year season ticket holder who is a border patrol agent and is known to dozens of longtime posters here.

It is entirely plausible that the month or two without access to his juice of choice saw him start suffering injuries that would have been suppressed or faster healing otherwise.

It would be great if I am wrong and he could come back but I don't feel that's going to be the case.
