If a team is considering investing a valuable draft pick and several millions of dollars in you, they can ask whatever the hell they want. No one says you have to agree to the interview, no one is making you attend, no one is making you answer.

 

Offensive? Yes. But these teams are dotting all their "i's" and crossing all their "t's". They want to make the best investment they can. They don't want a player they pick to wash out or wind up suspended. They want him to have a long, productive and exciting career.

 

It's the dirty side of the business, but it's a necessary evil.

this goes back to the thread about the Bucs grilling Rolle about "abandoning his teammates". theyre only asking to see how he reacts. in today's league where EVERY move a player makes in their personal life can effect his career and team, you HAVE to push these guys psychologically in an interview to see how they hold up. plus, given his personal history, the team needs to know what type of people the player is going to have in his life. if she was a prostitute, do you really want to bring in a kid who is going to be attracting those types of people to prey off him?

 

if i was interviewing for a MULTI-MILLION dollar job, as a 20 year old punk, I'd expect to be tested on all levels.

In the heat of the moment yes i probably would have, i have a very short temper with this kind of stuff. Going into the interview knowing that i still have 31 other chances to go somewhere, i probably would have had a few choice words for the guy.

 

Granted you have to explain yourself afterwards about why you blew up, i think most logical people would understand.

That's your opinion. There are literally millions of different jobs out there. They all have different requirements, different things at stake.

 

These questions are not as direct, not as black and white as you might think. They are as much about seeing how one reacts to the questions. To they get defensive and their back up against the wall? It shows that they may crack under pressure. They also help analyze one's psychological tendencies.

 

There are numerous jobs that require you to write a psych test. The questions are odd, sometimes seem ridiculous and even offensive. They may also seem irrelevent to the job. But they are relevant. One's answers are calculated and grouped into catergories that allow potential employers to gauge one's suitability for a job. They can help preict if someone is prone to anger issues, depression, trust issues, etc.

 

It's not what's on the surface of the question, trust me.

 

You can google these psych tests. The questions range from things like:

 

"Do you love your father?"

 

"Does the presence of blood gross you out?"

 

"Would you prefer the work of a florist or mechanic?"

 

"Have you ever engaged in beastiality?"

 

"Would you rather go for a run or read a book?"

 

This interview is a pysch test, not a stab at his family. Not a slight against him, nor meant to insult or offend. It was to gauge his response in terms of how he responded, his body lanuage, tone, diction, kinesics, etc. They wanted to see how he reacted to being asked this question. They could care less about his actually answer.

 

It was a maturity test and it would appear that Dez failed it.

 

To be blunt, you're wrong. Don't take this as an attack on you, but you've misunderstood what this interview's intentions were.

Toby Gerhart was highly annoyed when he was asked questions such as:

 

"Do you think you're the poster boy for white running backs?"

 

"Do you think that being a white running back makes you entitled?"

 

Could you imagine how po'd he'd be if they asked him if his mom was a prostitute?

 

Kidding aside, not to justify the questions, but I know some of them are designed for shock value and to evoke the interviewees reactions. In a way, how to deal with adversity...or conflict...or authority...whatever psychological trait they believe that they are measuring.

 

Not sure how I feel about the practice but if I was a player, I'd be ready for such questions and their agents should prepare them as such.

 

One more point. Not to cast aspersions on Dez, but these teams spend a lot of time and money on background checks. They may have run into factual reports that his mom was a prostitute. That would be a more sound basis upon which to ask the question.

I get the whole trying to throw someone off kilter, to see how they react in stressful situations, but I believe a sarcastic response, without anger would've had the same effect. Shows that the player is not in an angered state, and can throw back insults just as easily as he gets insulted.

I'd compare them to athletes taking PEDs. They play games to keep the share value up, thus creating a false illusion of grandure.

I would have told the exec, don't waste a pick drafting me because I will not sign here, then I would of filed a complaint with the league. Knowing that if I knew my character was as sound as my game was, I would be signed by a team with class that respects it's employees. It shouldn't always be about the money. What the Dophons did was classless and very unprofessional if it is true and the context is correct.
