Great short-yardage Offense game plan again...And they wonder why they can't convert on 3rd Down? -

Nice hands to the face by Brown to get separation there...I know Rogers sucks...But he's lucky he does not have a snapped neck after that one... -
What must the Bills prove to you today
KOKBILLS replied to boyst's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Win at Home...The mark of a better team, even an improving team, should be the ability to defend Home turf...They need to start winning at Home regularly...They looked decent vs. a very good NE team in week one...But they still lost...Until this team wins at Home they are going nowhere... I rarely get much encouragement from losing... -
The Offense was stopped in it's tracks by Fitz's inability to execute consistently. He was terribly inaccurate down the field, he threw the ball to the other team too often, and he was streaky...When he was on a bad streak he was really bad...I never felt Gailey was all that bad as an OC...Sometimes his play calling left a lot to be desired...But it cannot be denied that he drew up some great plays, he got a hell of a lot out of some VERY average talent, and more than anything he knew how to get Spiller the ball in space...Something our Offense has been unable to do for 3 straight games now... I'm not Gailey's biggest fan, but I do think if he was simply the OC, and had EJ to work with, this Offense would be farther along than it is right now...That's not to say that Hackett can't get it right in time...But I am a bit disappointed that the Bills seem to have abandon the many ways Gailey used to get Spiller loose...If we can't at least do that, EJ is going to have a hell of an uphill battle the rest of the year...

DraftTek Positional Needs --- Any Changes Needed?
KOKBILLS replied to Astrobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I see this every so often around here and I continue to shake my head... It's FAR more likely that the Bills Draft an OT in the 1st Round and play the Rookie inside for a year or two... Anyway...Just glancing at the CBS board I noticed 5 of the Top 25 players are OT's at this point...One OG ranked in the Top 25...And an additional OG and OT in the late 1st-early 2nd area...That's some nice depth...7 of the top 37 currently are O-Linemen... CBS currently has only 2 CB's with 1st round grades, and 2 more CB's in the late 1st-early 2nd area... So at a VERY early glance (I realize things can change drastically in the next 7 months) 2014 looks like it may be a good year to be looking for O-linemen, and a thinner CB crop...CBS has 12 CB's total in their current Top 100, but 8 of them are ranked in the 50-100 area...They have 15 OT/OG's total in that same top 100... -
I can honestly say I thought Florence was going to be a Bill again the minute he got cut...Seemed like a no-brainer to me...If anyone on that Bills staff thinks Rogers is a more viable option at CB than Florence we are really screwed...Not to say Florence is the be all, end all...But still...Maybe it was just a FO thing...Who knows...

Tell me more about drafting CBs...
KOKBILLS replied to OCinBuffalo's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Point taken...But considering a 5-7 undrafted free agent looks better at times than Rogers, who was only a 7th round pick himself, it's hard for me to believe there was no help in the middle rounds at CB either...And I spoke about the Bills picks from the 3rd to the 5th round...Not just the 5th round... Not to mention our 4th and 5th Round Safeties are sitting on the sidelines watching a 5' 8" street UFA start ahead of them...That's not to say Leonard is not a good player, and a nice Roster addition...But I think it furthers the point that two mid round Safeties was one too many... We could have used one of those picks on a project CB...And it's VERY hard to imagine that project CB could be worse than Rogers... -
He signed a 4 year Rookie deal which makes him a UFA in 2014...

Tell me more about drafting CBs...
KOKBILLS replied to OCinBuffalo's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I was as surprised as anyone that the Bills neglected the CB position in the 2013 Draft...I was even more surprised that the did so while drafting two mid round Safeties... But the Bills had SO many needs going into this Draft, and lets not forget Gilmore was 100% healthy...I don't mind that they did not take a CB high... I have no problem with the Bills first 3 picks in the 2013 Draft...But I do question what they did after that...Goodwin, while electric, is a project at WR...And what he does best, KR, is almost non-existent in today's NFL...Then they take the two Safeties even though they know Aaron Williams (a former 2nd Round Pick) is moving to Safety, and that Byrd is coming back for at least one more year...I don't mind that they took a Safety, but two??? I think it's easy to look back now and say those picks may have been better spent at CB...But who knows what their board was like...Obviously they graded Goodwin, Williams, and Meeks higher than the CB's available...But not adding some depth at CB through the Draft is coming back and biting them big-time...I don't think that can be questioned... -
No question Rex has our number...It can't be debated at this point... But yesterdays game basically came down to the Bills inability to cover the deep pass...When you're without 4 of your top 5 DB's, getting beat deep for big plays is always going to be a possibility...I give credit to Rex and Marty for understanding that and exploiting it...But if the teams were both 100% healthy I think the outcome is different, and the Bills win fairly easily...
-
This is a major blow to the D-Line...No doubt about it... Sucks for the kid too...Contract year and all...
-
First off there is no question Levitre is a good player...every Bills fan knows it and every Bills fan would have like to have seen Levitre come back at a fair price... But the problem was not letting Levitre go for outrageous OG money...The problem is, and will continue to be, not finding a viable replacement for him in Free Agency or in the Draft...
-
Could be...Levitre definitely made a difference on screens...And screens do not come without some risk...They have to be executed properly for sure...But when something is an integral part of your Offense your drilling that in practice constantly...Teams get better at it because they are practicing it day in and day out...At least that's what I imagine... I just don't see how any NFL offense in this day and age is going to be effective without utilizing the screen game from time to time...Screens are basically used to slow down pressure...In a game like yesterday's I think it's easy to assume that a couple well designed screens could have made a big difference...But what do I know...I certainly could be wrong about it...Maybe they simply feel the personnel is not a good fit...Though I think you have 2 of the better screen RB's in the NFL...

Injuries. When will this team address this?
KOKBILLS replied to offyourocker's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Exactly...There is no team in the NFL that can lose 4 of their top 5 DB's and expect that it won't have a major impact on a game at some point... -
I'm much more inclined to agree with this take than any other...Sometimes you have to go with what you see more than anything...This Defense looks much better to me overall...But the injuries are taking their toll...You can't hide for long in the NFL...Especially when you're going up against an experienced OC who has had some success in this league...The fact is for most of the game yesterday the Bills were playing without 4 of their top 5 DB's...That simply cannot be ignored...IMHO it cost them the game...Especially because it seems as if Pettine was a bit stubborn on giving Rogers help over the top... And to the OP...It should also be noted that the Bills first 3 opponents last year included KC and Cleveland...Two woefully poor Offenses...And this team has allowed 6 fewer points than that one did through 3 games...

I'm afraid Chan was right about Spiller
KOKBILLS replied to FireChan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Personally I think this Offensive scheme and play calling has as much to do with Spiller's poor results than anything... But I do agree with the OP...In a way at least...I think more than the every-down thing with Spiller Chan realized there was a way to use Spiller, and a way NOT to use Spiller...Hackett is trying to use Spiller the way he would use any RB...That's why Freddie looks better in this Offense...Freddie is more of a conventional back who gets you the tough yards between the OT's...Spiller needs SPACE...But all too often the plays call for him to hit a clogged gap on the interior, and that is simply not CJ's game...Remember how little CJ saw the ball last year in short yardage after the goal-line fumble vs. NE?... If I was Hackett I would go back to the drawing board on how to utilize Spiller...Pick out his favorite running plays and screens from last year and start working that stuff in starting this week...One thing is 100% certain...The read option look that has CJ taking the ball and running into a mass of humanity between the OG's and OT's is failing miserably... Spiller is a different kind of RB...I still think there is no question he can carry the load...But not in the same way Adrian Peterson and other more conventional RB's do it...You have to be creative with the way you utilize CJ...Run a couple conventional running plays to keep the Defense honest...But mainly find ways to get him into space so he can do his thing... Lastly...It does not help that Defenses are clearly concentrating on stopping Spiller...And they should...We have a Rookie QB who is unproven...This is Hackett's main dilemma...It's the Bills Offense that has mostly been thrown off by what the Defenses are doing to stop them...They are not doing much to keep the Defenses honest through a creative or effective game-plan...This is the problem with most NFL Offenses when you have a Rookie QB...And until Hackett can come up with a few wrinkles, especially on 1st down, it's going to be more of the same...Look at how effective those two simple FB passes were vs. Carolina...That's the kind of play that keeps Defenses honest, and gives your Rookie QB confidence... Anyway... -
We certainly did not last year...I remember hearing several times we were among the best screen-play teams in the league... I'm sure we do suck at them now though...Seeing as though they are completely removed from the playbook and I'm assuming they have not practiced them much... Just saying...

Today was a reality check Bills fans
KOKBILLS replied to buffalo_bills's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Really? I mean...Really? Not that I don't want to give the kid credit...He had a good game...He was also facing a Defense without 4 of their top 5 DB's for the majority of the game...He threw two nice deep passes that resulted in TD's vs a guy who can't cover...I saw JP Losman do the same thing more than once...Geno has a long, long, way to go...A long way...He had 2 INT's in this game that very well could have cost the Jets the victory if the Bills were capable of sustaining anything offensively... I've seen Geno play two full games now...I've seen EJ play three...I've yet to see much out of either that would lead me to believe they are going to be a Franchise QB's...I have seen enough to think they both have the potential to do so if they continue to improve and clean up the mistakes...We'll see in a couple years...
