Gotta say John I spoke with at least 5 die-hard Bills Fans Friday who said the minute EJ got hurt not only did they know the Bills would lose that game, they knew the season was basically over...It's not so much about the overall feeling folks have about the team, because most believe the Bills are better on Defense, and that we do have a decent team overall...But our QB situation is a complete cluster-you-know-what now...And that's reason enough for some Bills Fans to throw that white flag you spoke about...

Agreed...If nothing else they cut Jackson WAY to early...Tuel is a UDFA, and Kolb had been VERY injury prone in the past...They cut Jackson, then it's not even the 1st game into the preseason and Kolb is already out...Then EJ gets hurt, Kolb gets hurt again...Why they cut jackson when they did is a complete mystery...There was no good reason for it...They just resigned the guy 4 months prior...

That's a fair point...And Drafting those two Safeties, along with a second WR who's best attribute is being a KR in a league that has basically ruled out Kick Returns, forced the Bills to pass on strengthening a VERY weak depth chart at OG or CB...I think if you're going to Draft two Safeties anyway, then it would have been smarter to keep Levitre over Byrd... This FO continues to do things that make you shake your head...

Hard for me to believe there was not a single Punter better than the 2013 version of Moorman available...VERY hard for me to believe...

Prior does not look bad to me...He's putting up decent numbers on a team mostly devoid of offensive talent...And I mean mostly devoid...His top WR is Denarius Moore, who is a decent WR, but a #2 at best on most NFL teams...McFadden is hurt constantly...The O-Line is average...Still he's completed 65% of his passes and has a 86.7 QB rating...I'll tell you this much...I'd take Prior over Tuel...Maybe we can swing that if Freeman goes to Oakland?

Agreed...Though I've always felt, in the end, the Bills would have to settle for a 2nd and another pick (maybe conditional, maybe a 4th) for Byrd...I don't imagine the PF has helped his trade value at all...If he plays out the year, and plays really well, there is definitely a chance his trade value could increase....It's a weird time to trade him...The team trading for him is going to have to be convinced the PF is a non-issue...I just don't see how the Bills are going to get equal value for Byrd unless it's a trade for another Pro Bowl caliber player on a rebuilding team who is due to hit Free Agency this coming off season...That player would likely be an OG or CB...This is not going to be an easy deal to get done...

Would Rather play Cleveland twice a year

Many of us have!!! It's really a no-brainer... -
JMO...But if Flynn was really any good there is no way in hell Seattle would have got rid of him...Russell Wilson, or no Russell Wilson...That team is all about stock piling talent for a SB run...If they thought Flynn was really good they would have kept him as insurance in case Wilson got hurt... That being said, if Oakland was to release Flynn I would take him over Tuel...I would not give up a pick for him though...Not even a late one... That's pretty much my take on the situation as well...

I agree Tampa has a lot of talent overall... As far as Freeman's work ethic is concerned it depends on who you listen to...Some ex-coaches seem to love the kid...Schiano has done a great job to smear him...I have no idea who is right...It's up to Freeman to go out and prove he's viable...it's all on his shoulders now...I'll say this much...If he comes to Buffalo it shows me he's got ambition to prove his detractors wrong...If he goes to Oakland it just shows me he wants a comfy OC situation and a few game checks...
-
No question... BTW...His projected season stat line on ESPN.com is 141 TT's, 3 sacks, 3 FF's, 13 passes defended, and 13 INT's...

Exactly John... The script is written for Freeman, all he needs to do is accept the role...A half-way effective stint in Buffalo over the next 6 weeks and he's probably the #1 QB available next offseason... If he goes to Oakland there is a decent chance he never sees the field in 2013...The rumors about him will lag on, and he'll be looking for a back-up role in 2014...And the Raiders don't have the overall talent the Bills have either...To me it seems like a no-brainer for the kid...But who knows?
-
One would think... He's not going to see the field in Oakland this season as long as Pryor is healthy and they unload Flynn...How is that going to help him in Free Agency this coming off season? The current situation in Buffalo is as rare an opportunity a just released vet QB going into Free Agency is ever going to get...Honestly, I would think if Freeman is really a competitor he's begging to come to Buffalo right about now... True...And a complete nut job for a HC...

Exactly...And I'm guessing the Bills/Browns and even the Bills/Steelers could turn into a great rivalries in time...Assuming the Bills and Browns ever become viable again of course... This was a no-brainer when the league re-structured the Divisions...Of course it did not help that our owner was dead set against it... -
The truth is this team has gambled with the middle and the bottom of this roster and it's cost them again on the field...It's not as much about top tier spending as it is about spending to find better players than the likes of Rogers, Tuel, Colin Brown, etc...The cost differential to fill positions like that is minimal, and certainly within the $20 mil or so they are under the cap...But the Bills tried to buck the odds and got caught by the injury bug...Lesson learned? We'll see next off season... I should note that they actually did the right thing in retaining Tavaris Jackson as an insurance policy at QB...Then they cut him 4 months later...So even when they got it right, they got it wrong...

If EJ is out at least 5-8 Weeks, do we draft a QB in the 1st?
KOKBILLS replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Exactly...And especially when you're Rookie QB suffers two knee injuries before Week #6... That being said I seriously doubt the Bills Draft a QB in Round #1 2014...They just don't seem to be that kind of organization... -
Really? Do you have any idea what the odds are that ALL of them had nothing to say before Manuel got hurt?...Even though Manuel was already hurt once in preseason...Did you miss the comments by some that were pretty surprised the Bills decided to go with only Manuel and Tuel on the final 53? Did you miss the TJ thread when he was cut? No offense but...Overgeneralization...My #1 pet peeve on this board...Followed closely by over-exaggeration...
-
They had one...His name is Tavaris Jackson...And even if the Bills liked Kolb better and thought they might keep Tuel over him, there was zero reason to cut Jackson as early as they did...And almost on cue Kolb and Manuel get hurt in preseason and it's a cluster-you-know-what at the QB position...If you're thinking about keeping Tuel you HAVE to know you can stash him on the Dev Squad minimum...You're going with a Rookie QB who is a mobile guy...so you HAVE to know how important the backup QB position is going to be...Right? You just HAVE to know...It's Whaley's job to know...So before you even play a down in preseason you release a vet QB (who has had at least some success in the NFL) who you just resigned 4 months earlier, because you landed an undrafted kid who was 4-22 as a starter in College? Really? And they wonder why Kolb and Manuel got hurt throughout preseason? I was obviously karma... And I'm only 3/4 kidding... And by no means am I saying TJ was the be-all, end-all...But I think at this point we can all agree he was probably a better option than Tuel for this season...Next season maybe Tuel passes him...Who knows?...Just another example of a questionable move made by this FO when all they had to do was stay put and let it all play out...

Well...The next game is 8 days away...Lewis and Tuel have both been in Buffalo since at least the last pre-season game...They know the playbook by now...At least relatively well...They know the players, they know the Coaches...While I'm not against signing Freeman I can't see how he could possibly be ready for the Cincy game, unless the Bills plan on handing it off 80% of the time...So anyway, I'm certain most of the vets on this team understand as raw as they are, Tuel and Lewis probably give the Bills the best chance to win in 8 days... Beyond that you may have a point, especially if either Tuel or Lewis look bad vs. Cincy...And it's an unfortunate Roster dilemma, but my guess is Lewis has to come up and take a spot for the Cincy game, and the Bills are going to have to give up another spot immediately if they want to bring in a guy like Freeman...I do think in comparison to what is out there Freeman is far and away the best option...I'm just not sure how quickly he can really help...And I think most of the vets like KW understand that...I think they may be more pissed off about the fact that the Bills went into the season the way they did at QB...Not necessarily how they react to it now...

OK...I agree with that take...No question about it the lack of focus on certain areas of depth on this team is the root of the problem...I've said as much here before... And once again...It's not an excuse if it's a fact...It's a fact the Bills have suffered greatly from that lack of depth you describe...It's happening on the field, during games, and it's obviously due to the injuries...We all know Gilmore and McLovin is worlds better than Rogers and A Williams at CB...It's truth...The CB position alone has accounted for how many TD's now? I just don't see how it's making excuses when someone is pointing out the fact that a CB who was a borderline roster player is getting toasted due to mass injuries at his position...It's not an excuse...It's a fact... But no question the cause behind the fact was poor roster planning...That much we agree upon...
