Dan Patrick: Bills have called Browns about #1 pick
apuszczalowski replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Thats the problem, none of the top guys are hands down generational franchise QBs like Luck, or Manning(s). Its more likely they are the next Winston, Marriotta Caliber. Good but not great QBs and not worth a boatload of picks to get. Because people are desperate to grab the next Brady they think that its all about just giving up picks and getting that guy, then you become an automatic contender. Just ask the Colts, Lions, and Chargers how thats working out for them....... -
But is that a Million dollar Jackpot or a $100 jackpot? No Qb in this draft is a lock to be Manning/Luck/Brady/Brees its more likely they could all max out as the next Winston or Marriotta Are you happy giving up almost the entire first half of your draft to move up to get Winston, Marriotta, Bortles or Trubisky? Just because the QB is the best QB in his draft class it doesn't mean they are worth mortgaging the future over. Just because the Bills haven't had a franchise QB in a long time and just like every other team, wants one, doesn't mean giving up a boatload of picks to get one this year will mean they have some force to be reckoned with at QB for 10-15 years

I brought this up after they made the trade and was told it was impossible that they did it for a QB and you don't trade what they did for a RB, cause you can get one later (which is the new belief that RBs are a dime a dozen and can be found anywhere) I'm sure the jags (Fournette) and Cowboys (Elliotte) regret taking those guys when they could just pick someone off the street to play that position.... -

First Round QB Busts since 2000
apuszczalowski replied to Sky Diver's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
A little early to call some of those guys franchise QBs. Mahommes has barely seen the field, Watson hasn't played an entire season yet. You would feel comfortable trading away the Bills top 6 picks this year to get Trubisky or Bortles, or Tannehill? Would you be happy having Winston, or Marriotta or Bridgewater using those picks? The top guys in this years draft or more likely to be the next one of those players then the elite QBs like Brady or Manning or Brees. They don't have to mortgage their draft and still get a Jackson, or Rudolph who could be just as good or better then Tannehill or Bortles. -

You can throw the value chart out the window now as GMs are going to want a premium knowing what the Jets paid to only move up 3 spots. The Browns or Giants would be moving down 10-11 spots most likely taking them out of any chance of getting a player they could have gotten at that spot. Colts move down and still have a chance at who they could have had at 3. -

They have no money left for any impact FAs this year and still have a bunch of needs to fill for this season which will now have to be through the draft. They won't be able to do that if they give away all their picks to select someone who is most likely going to end up the next Winston or Marriotta, and then telling a fan base who just had their first playoff game in over a decade to wait til next year when we can spend some money in FA, which also means they will have even more holes to fill to replace the guys who's salaries are coming off the books. They can stay put and still take a good prospect QB in Jackson or Rudolph with one of their picks to go along with a QB who has potential to also be a good starter in this league in McCarron while using the draft capital they have to restock the roster with some talent. I'm sure Kyle would have been eager to come back knowing the plan was to wait til next year to get better -

There's no way that gets them the #1 overall pick. The Browns would need to be blown away to justify moving the #1 overall pick and dropping one of their picks out of the top 10. It's going to be really hard for them to be able to go back to that fan base and justify giving away the #1 overall pick and the top QB i this draft to move back that far..... -

Easy to just say that but they still have a season to play this year. This is still a business and theres fans and players o the team who actually want to build off last year and get better. Not take a year off and wait til next year. -
The point that many are trying to make isn't that they don't think the Bills need to get a QB, but that this draft class isn't hyped because of the great quality of the top guys, but more then number of the potential guys available. There aren't any sure things or guarantees in this class, they all have some issues and concerns and it's more likely that the level of these may top out in the Winston/Marriotta level then the Mannings/Luck/Brees level. Many don't think the value is there to trade most of their top picks this year or next to move up for a good but not great starter when even the 4th or 5th QB in this draft has that potential. The cost is going to be huge to move up to get in front of the Jets, and theres no guarantee the guys there are going to be so much better then the 4th or 5th guy.
-
But is the best guy in this draft a Manning or Mariota/Winston? And do you feel giving up the first 3 rounds of this year's draft is worth Mariota/Winston? What some are saying is that the key to this year's draft is that there are many good QBs available, but no great ones. Is it worth the cost to move up to get just a good QB, which is what they may have actually signed already in McCarron. Theres no guarantee generational franchise cant miss QB this year like Manning or Luck. All of them have faults or concerns. Just because the Bills need a franchise QB, it doesn't mean you have to be stupid and give away a boat load of picks to get someone who might never be that player. Theres more then one way to win, it might be smarter to build the rest of the team up right now while continuing to look for the right QB that won't involve giving up so much.
-
Put it this way, would everyone be so comfortable and willing to give up both 1sts, 2nds, and 3rds in order to get Winston, Marriota, Trubisky, or Bortles? Theres as good of a chance that the top guys this year end up being one of those guys and not the next Manning, Manning, Rothlesburger, or Brees..... Giving away all those picks could put the Bills in the same position as the chargers having Rivers and nothing else, leading to some one and done playoff appearances and nothing more, even though having a Franchise QB means long term franchise success......

Can't help but think of the 2004 draft...
apuszczalowski replied to Eddiegoofball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Also the backup QB who had to come in and finish the season, and play in the playoffs where he beat one of the top defences (Vikings) and out duel Brady in the SB. -
Unfortunately the draft will probably go like this..
apuszczalowski replied to Bakin's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If the Giants GM doesn't he would most likely be fired on the spot and laughed out of the league. What reason wouldn't they have for asking for the moon? Theirs pick pro ably doubled in value now as it's the only spot possibly left to get one of the top 3 guys. -
Colts just got three picks for nothing

Why not spend over 15 mil this offseason on 2 vets to then give up a buncj of picks to move up a couple spots for a QB...... -

Are they not allowed to re-sign or extend them? -

Who knows, but they could move something and try to get another 1st next year like they did this year. Gives them an option if AJ doesn't work out -

Then buffalo trades down from 12 and gets Jackson plus more picks. Also, maybe the Jets fool everyone and make them think they want a QB but instead wanted Barkley or Chubb who now fall to them..... -

Could the Jets be moving up for Barkley? They just signed 2 QBs with 2 on their roster already. Bridgewater could be more then a bridge or stop gap guy. Browns go QB, Giants go QB or trade with someone else who now will be scarred of the Jets also going QB and Barkley (or Chubb) falls to them cause everyone thinks they go QB -

Why do suits today look like the sleeves and pant legs are too short? And I think this look works only if your an elderly white man who likes yelling about wussy Euros and hits/fights in hockey? -
It's funny cause if he came out and said I have a deal worked out and we are moving up no matter the cost, everyone would get excited and no one would be sitting here talking about how he is lying and that's what they Do, its a smokescreen. If it's not what the fans want to hear it's always that it's lying, poker face, smokescreen, etc. Except when it's what they want them to say.

And people wanted Goodwin gone because he was always injured and focused on the Olympics and track. Now he seems focused more on football and played well. Similar to woods, people here just didn't think he wad worth what he was going to get paid based on his play here.

Well according to Beane in his PC this morning, they have enough for the rookies and an injury cushion and not much else............
