  1. So I have to dig 2 pages into the details of a lawsuit to find the three sentences that support that point? Sounds like a legal position--not a Vatican declaration.
  2. I don't see that story anywhere.
  3. There is no official "list." There are hundreds of "wonders" lists. The Falls are not on most of them. Not that it matters. It's a neat natural wonder, augmented by drunks, casinos, and wax museums.
  4. The victims don't get to determine the punishments, neither to make them harsher nor make them more lenient. The reason is that you have no way of knowing what influences their personal opinion (bribes, personal anger, mental illness). He raped a little girl. The woman she's become has no say in his punishment.
  5. Engineers do lots of things. I had 2 different roles as engineer: (1) I was a lab engineer. I worked in a lab that did thermal testing on windows and doors. My job was to set up the tests, make sure they ran correctly, and then "rate" the windows for rating agencies. When something broke in the testing labs, my job was to fix it if I could, or know when to call in someone to fix it. (2) I was in project management for a environmental cleanup company. My job was to oversee the designs, design changes, and implementation of the designs in the field. I also made sure the job stayed on schedule and budget. Then I went to law school and now I'm a patent attorney, helping engineers turn their inventions into patents.
  6. You don't know that won't work. Goddammit, I'd piss on the spark plug if I thought it'd do any good!
  7. The processed food at regular stores is cheaper no doubt. When we started shopping there, our weekly grocery bill went up maybe $40. That's dropped some as we've weaned ourselves from just about any processed crap.
  8. The wonders are just lists people put together. There's no official list. I could make a list of wonders and publish it and it would be John Adams's Wonders of the World. The Falls is not on many of those lists but it is on some.
  9. Jail time accomplishes little but it's how we punish criminals. In Polanski's case, his crime is one of the most heinous someone can commit. That the girl now woman has found it in herself to move on (or been paid off) has nothing whatsoever to do with it. HE RAPED A 13 YEAR OLD GIRL FERCHISSAKES! Are you really arguing that raping children should go unpunished?
  10. First, it's not my money because I don't live in Texas. Second, lots of states work to lure businesses in. Giving tax breaks and access to buildings doesn't sound like something that doesn't happen 100X a day. I hope Pennsylvania is giving tax breaks to lure a multimillion dollar movie to PA right now.
  11. Have you not seen every terrorist-based movie bad guy in the last 20 years?
  12. Wegman's is the best of traditional model grocery stores. We way prefer Whole Foods though.
  13. Umm, I enjoy a little outside discussion here and there but no, that's not the best part of the show for me or most of the people who haven't dressed up for Comic-Con. I dedicate an hour of my life during the season to watching the show Lost. It's not worth much more than that and if I have to buy a post-show encyclopedia to wrap up some questions, I won't and can't imagine many of the millions who watched the show will. I don't care if they don't wrap up every open thread but they need to wrap up the biggies. And I hoep they haven't just left the magic of the island as the result of a gay unexplained "light." Now I know they have 3.5 hours to offer something a bit more on the "light," but I suspect that dedicating one crappy hour to its revelation is all we're gonna get. And if that's it, it was not a good idea or revelation. It's not as bad as "It's all a dream" but it's close.
  14. It will be interesting indeed. The Chinese economy has its own problems. Sure they have lots of liquid but they also have issues with inflation and that ignores the always-looming political rise that can happen at any point. And they are tied hand in hand with the US. I don't know that we're all !@#$ed but I do think the US has time to start turning the ship if it acts soon. Sadly, I see the US in what is happening in Greece, where even in the face of impending doom, the Grecian politicians couldn't make the decision to cut spending. I fear our pols are in that same boat.
  15. The EU has doom written all over it. 1T to Greece won't get them to fix themselves because they lack the political backbone. And what's happening in Greece now is nothing compared to what is on the horizon in Spain and Portugal. Hold off on your European vacations for a few years. In no time, your dollars will go a long ways in Europe.
  16. His anti-Roberts stance is even less defensible. He opposed him not because of his qualifications, which he did not question, but because of his "overarching ideology." Miers sabotaged herself. She was a mess in the nomination process. You have to at least jump through the hoops. If you do that and don't burn the place down, you usually get nominated.
  17. Fantastic.
  18. Ding. That's why the mida-chlorines was such an appropriate reference. No one ever needed a gay explanation of "how" the Force worked...and when the explanation came, it was distractingly bad. The "light" is like that. Stupid. I'd rather have it vague and just explain the guardians, smokey, MIB, etc.
  19. Your public schools further at work.
  20. My brother in law did this for $10 when he was a teen. I supplied the $10 and the pepper. He supplied the agony. I DO NOT recommend this but I'm happy to link to the video.
  21. The ratings agencies were influenced by the Goldman Sach's of the world but the scarier thing is that they were rating tranches of subprime mortgages as AAA rated even before the inflluence started. They were completely idiotic and not at all checking on the bonds they rated AAA because if they did, they would have found out that in lots of them, more than 50% of the underlying mortgages were secured with no down payment, adjustable ARMs, and for people with thin-file credit (ie, people who had great credit because they'd never had almost any credit). Somehow packaging ****ty subprime mortgages all together in one giant pile of **** convinced Moody's to rate things AAA. No amount of regulation can overcome that kind of stupidity.
  22. What a maroon. Every example he cites for poor behavior and cheating did NOT involve a re-vote. This one did. So just re-vote and get it over with.
  23. The guy hasn't hit the shift key in a thousand posts and someone is mocking his misuse of "you're?"
