Bates Declining Bills DC Job Offer!!
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to D' men's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If I were a high profile type of defensive coordinator, I don't think I'd want to go to a team with a head coach with a strong defensive background as I'm sure I wouldn''t be a free to run the entire defensive as I choose. Just as it's been reported that DJ is giving Fairchild freedom on the offensive side, it likely would be somewhat the opposite for the DC whomever he is. In that respect, it would make more sense for Bates to go to Houston with Kubiak. More likely the Bill's will pick up a defensive position coach who shows promise as their DC. It would be good for him to learn from a guy like DJ. Thats likely the best you'll do regardless of how much money you throw at him. Conversely, if the Bill's had selected Sherman as HC, then Bates would have been a better fit. But we'll see. -
Jaurons Contract
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Ed_Formerly_of_Roch's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yeah, but they always say that, but yet everything ends up coming out. MM was what, four years at $1mill per year, or was it five years? So how come no scoop on DJ -
Everyone was so excited regarding the Bill's hiring Jauron, (and not in a good way) never recall reading anything regarding the length of his contract and for how much?? Was that ever mentioned? I recall when MM was hired the Bill's did give the details, or it came through a third party?

With the hiring of Fairchild as OC...
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Didn't both Marv and Sam come through the Bill Walsh family? I know Sam did in Cinncy, and I though Levy had a connection with Walsh too? When you look at all the coaches, they really all are decendents of about ten or so "patriachs" (sp) Wlsh, Parsells, Gibbs And those guys came from others. There's alot of imbreeding going on in the coaching ranks. If we start referring to the families around here, people might start thinking we're discussing the mob. -
Jauron radio interview Tues. evening
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to stevewin's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I kind of find it refreshing that he uses words like "hope to win" etc. He's realistic. Just as they say QB's get too much credit when they win and too much blame when they lose, that holds true for the coach too. Most of these guys all ride into town telling the owner he better start building a case for the Lombardi trophy, only to be ridden out of town on a rail. And not just referring to MM, GW, and TD, but other teams as well. -
Marv the G.M. and ties to Polian

Who'd we get from St Louis prior? -
JP Losman deserves better
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to 1billsfan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yeah, cause the pass was so far off the mark, all the receiver could do was get a hand on it. There are often int's that aren't the QB's fault. Those two DON'T fall in that catagory. -
DJ on ESPN Radio right now

That may be the thing that did Sherman in. Not on the same page as Marv. -
WGR: Voice of reason??
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to loadofmularkey's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Huh.... Gee I always thought the GM put the team together. So that implies the reason the Bills were so bad the last five years had nothing to do with TD, it was all the coaches. Granted TD hired them, but if that was his only mistake, we never should have let TD go. Sounds like there were no problems on the Bill's O Line. Mularky just didn't play the right people in the right spots. -
Lads and gents, your 2006 Bungling Bills!
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Grant's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The problem is the fans don't have to work with Sherman, Marv and Ralph do. Why would anyone hire a coach or anyone for any type of position for that matter that you don't freel you can work with? Did Marv hire him becasue he's his friend or is he his friend because they share common opinion on how to build teams, pick players coaches etc. -
If this board was alive in 1986
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Like A Mofo's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well for starters, we likely would have been ripping the hell out out Ralph the year prior when he went cheap and hired some red headed unknown for a GM Then we would have complained that this unknown GM knuckeled under to Ralph and went cheap again and hired some loser coach. -
Good to hear he wasn't an "our your knees type of guy"

overwhelming majority of fans want Sherman
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Hawerchuk10's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No I understood. That's what I was implying. Based on Marv's quote, they will decide who to choose regardless of how easy or hard sell it will be to the fans. Ralph's position though is slightly different that Marv's as he does have a bit more at stake than Marv with regard to fan acceptence. Marv will make the exact same amount of money whether fans are happy or not. Ralph can lose money if fans are pissed. In the grand scheme of things the amount he'll lose is small though. -
Maybe the Bills haven't hired anyone

I believe there's an edict in place from the NFL, that no team is allowed to name coaching changes over the weekends while playoff games are going on. The thought is, they want all talk around the NFL centered on the games only, not being diverted as to who was just named coach -
Are we ever gonna pick a coach?

True but also pure speculation that they did pay him. If the Bill's did pay him, then we would be inline for some type of compensation. I'd imagine we may have given him some small amount of money, maybe health insuance till he found another job? If the Bill's gave him anything other than "pocket change" I think we would be owed something, but I doubt we are owed. He did get a $1 mil a year for past two years. Maybe he's better at handling money than he is a coaching, and has enough saved up to live comfortably till he found another job. Worse case, he is living in NY, home of easy food stamps!

Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Hawerchuk10's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I've been wondering, have the Bills been monitoring sites like this and looking at fan reaction? Do they care? Normally you'd say the Bill's should pick whomever they feel is the best man (or woman) for the job. But considering the short leash most fans are giving the Bill's right now, you'd think they'd want to do something to ease the fans concerns. Season tickets are important and I'd think they'll see a bigger dropoff in sales if they go with Jauron. Ralph stated there was no budget for picking the coach. Again hiring Sherman will support that statement. If I recall, didn't Marv in the past make some type of quote, "If you start listening to fans, soon you'll be one"?? The difference I see between the two is, if they give Sherman the job, I think the fan's will give him a bit of a break next year if they start losing. If they give it to Jauron, I doubt there'll be much of a honeymoon. If they start out 2-6 everyone will rip them and start staying away form the games. If they pick Sherman, we'll never know if they picked him cause they felt he was the best person or because of fan reaction. If it's Jauron. you will know they don't care about fan reaction, or are oblivious to it. In todays internet world, I'd more think it's that they don't care. -
I think that was part of the settlement deal between Ralph and MM. From what's been said, it sounds like Ralph gave him an unconditional release, he could go anywhere to coach anytime, but the Bill's didn't pay him anything either.
-
The only reason to hurry is if you're worried about losing out on a DC or OC. But again those aren't likely to fill to quick till the last coaching slots are filled. The nthings wil lcascade downward. If they hire Sherman, a good chance Bates comes too. So then have filled on coord slot. Then they just need to work on OC. And even without, they have the nucleus of the offensive staff in place. Plus Sherman is from offensive side, so again not too bad there. It would be hard for another team to offer April a promotion other than assistant HC/special teams, so not too nervious there either. I believe there's an edict in place from the NFL that says, though shalt not hire coaches or call a press conference while playoff games are going on or will be struck by lightening. Over the weekend they want all attention on the games and nothing else. So essentially no one can hire anyone till Monday. Not that they can't have a deal in place, but no actual hires announced.

What's happened to Fassell?
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Ed_Formerly_of_Roch's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yeah but Fassell did take a team to the Super Bowl. Thats a little bit more to put on a resume than MM has to go on. For a coach that 5 years ago took a team to the Super Bowl and other years, made the playoff, and not not even mentioned is a surprise. Particually when you consider how teams tend to recycle through the same coaches repeatedly. -
Boy did his star fall fast. Not just the Bills, but no one is talking to him. What happened to him? Did those pictures of him and the sheep at the combines get out?
