RD 3, Pick 80: DT Adolphus Washington, The Ohio State U
Webster Guy replied to Beerball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think the opposite. He was bpa so they took him despite a rotational pass rusher not being a major need because the guy is a beast. Uh, Rex doesn't decide who we draft. -
All Hail Doug Whaley! Look At All He's Done!
Webster Guy replied to Astrobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
he's done a lot of good. keeping boobie dixon over fred was a horrible call, other than that I like his moves. definitely will help him if Miller makes some strides at RG from weak to mediocre this year. He didn't grade out very well as a rook. -
RD 2, Pick 41: LB Reggie Ragland, University of Alabama
Webster Guy replied to Beerball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Some people will never like any pick. If you get two impact starters in any draft you're lucky. It only cost us a pair of 4th rounders i'll take it. I like Whaley's style. -
I think our next pick will be bpa among wr, lb/safety. This 1st round went as all of them seem to go--lots of surprises, players falling and rising. We knew shaq was our guy before dopey announced it at the podium. On a side note, all the negative stuff from Gruden and company was a joke. We switched the channel to rich eisen and the boys, I highly recommend it, a far better way to watch the draft.

I love when someone types out my exact thoughts and saves me the time. Thanks Lux

JW sez Bills going D with first pick
Webster Guy replied to Thurmal34's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Wait, Mario's contract and the salary he's demanding (10m$) means he'd be gone regardless. The guy is a loser, we will be such a better D with a young talent in there with work ethic and drive. So we'd be drafting a pass rusher regardless of who the head coach is. Before you slam Rex, go re watch 2nd patriots game last year and tell me he and dennis thurman didnt game plan and call an awesome game. All you anti Rex people forget how strong we finished on D despite no Kyle and Mario half assing his way through the games. -
What happens in '16 if Sammy Watkins goes down
Webster Guy replied to Estro's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well we're a run first offense, we have an excellent TE and we'll have Woods and some guys that can get open. We'll draft another WR in the first 4 rounds, get some UDFA's in, Hankerson and Boykin are both 6'2 and Dez is 6'4. Those guys will get a lot of reps with Tyrod as well and someone will emerge as a solid #3. Its not like we have Chan's offense where we needed a dozen wideouts. I expect the continuity of the offensive line to make a huge difference this season, Miller isn't a baby anymore, Glenn Richie and Wood can all kick ass. Tyrod and Roman are sophomores here, Shady, Karlos and Touchdown Mike all primed for a solid season. Not worried about WR's or TE's. Only Tyrod's durability and ability to continually improve and see the field. -
If Tyrod shows durability and continued progress this year, he will be worth $20m to us. Look around the league, if you aren't paying 20+ for your qb you arent in the playoffs.

Why The Bills Should Draft Offense
Webster Guy replied to Chilly's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
There is zero chance we take a WR at 19. Our scouting department is too good for that. Also, to correct the OP, if we did trade down we'd very likely have 3 picks in the 1st 2 rounds, not 2. We have the best rushing attack in the NFL last year, 2 good wr's and a great TE. Continuity on offensive line, Miller looking to join the other 3 in the "very good" club. We need 2 starters in our front 7 on D from this draft. Everything else is smokescreen. -
Plus not only was Sammy correct, Mario was wrong. It IS necessary to drop back into passing lanes as a DE when one or both of these things are happening: 1. You are consistently getting handled by a right tackle and putting zero pressure on the qb. When your DC sees this, he's going to run zone blitzes to help you and the TEAM get pressure on the qb or at least disrupt timing. This is what guys like Rex, Pettine and Dick LeBeau do very well when they're calling a game. All DE's are asked to do this intermittently in the 3-4's as far as I can tell. For the record, Mario didn't get asked to drop that often, and it wasn't like he was getting consistent pressure on the qb this last season anyway. 2. The qb you're playing against (Brady, Eli, etc) is doing a three step drop and gunning the ball for quick passes, holding it less than 2.5 seconds every time, which means no matter HOW good you are at rushing the passer, you couldn't get to him even if you were unblocked. In that case, your best use is dropping back into a passing lane and disrupting the timing of the qb with your 6 foot 6 wingspan. If you don't think dropping DE's once in awhile is a good idea, you don't understand the game. Its proven, and it works against guys like Brady as it did in the second game when we played great defense, good enough to win in their house if the offense would have converted a few more points.

This defense played a great game against the pats near the end of the season. That wasn't "dumbed down", it was well called and executed on the road against a great team and division rival. It also showed the effectiveness of dropping a big boy in Brady's passing lanes to take away the quick throw, which is the correct call (mario) when he's releasing the ball in 2 seconds and therefore impossible to sack or even pressure. The only thing Rex needs to change is the speed of the sideline calls, on both sides of the ball. Need maximum time out there for pre snap adjustments.
-
Wait.... don't you guys know you can't ever drop a D lineman back into coverage? It means you stink as a defensive coach and don't know what you're doing. Just ask Mario or half the posters on this board. Anyway, some mocks have Shaq and Dodd both going before we pick, and others have them both sitting there at 19. I'd love to know who we have ranked higher on the board right now.

Losman was a great looking qb from an NFL scout perspective. The dude just didn't have the instincts. When we brought in Sam Wyche to mentor him I thought the light was going to come on for the kid. I will always remember his long throws to Lee Evans. They had some good ones.......

Seattle is looking to trade out of the #26 pick.

4-19: Doug Whaley On the John Murphy Show
Webster Guy replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The odds are we'll stay put and take the best DL on the board, but I could see us pulling a Pittsburgh and taking a LB simply because there will still be quite a few quality defensive linemen there in the 2nd -

I think Bills are planning a move up in the draft
Webster Guy replied to Dragonborn10's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Depends on the Bills board and who falls in the draft. I think there will be a little struggle between the Rex and Whaley on draft philosophy. Rex's incentive is to win immediately or he and his brother may never coach again in the NFL, and Whaley has to think about the big picture and more long term implications of the draft. This is probably THE most uncertain draft I've seen. No clear cut #1 pick, and even the top 5 or 10 is a gray area. -
Nix vs. Whaley, the final showdown
Webster Guy replied to FireChan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
ahhhh the offseason...... (sigh) you forgot to include Sammy. Probably Whaley's biggest move ever as a GM and one that I don't think Nix would have done. -
Von Miller worth 20-25 mill yr?
Webster Guy replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Van single handedly beat up Brady and then Cam, the two best qb's in the league this year. He was more valuable than either one of those two elite qb's, an unblockable nightmare who stayed healthy and productive all the way to the championship. Elway is getting what he deserves for not extending Van last year and Brock mid-season. Now he has no qb and he's going to have to put a quarter of his next year's salary cap into paying the VON. I see the Broncos going downhill steadily for the next 5 years. -
This sounds like something Russ Brandon would drum up. Football is too much of a team sport for most positions to be evaluated by data, unlike baseball which is far more individualized, especially in terms of batting, on base percentage etc. What the Browns are doing reminds of what companies have to go through when some VP decides to hire consultants to come in. Everything gets shaken up, huge process improvements are promised, and in the end everything ends up back the way it was being done in the first place. The Browns have an awful drafting history since I can remember, so I guess there's nothing to lose.....
-
interesting. i've never seen a single mock that had anything right past the first handful of picks though. i just hope we pass on the qb's this year and get at least 2 defensive starters with a few more to add depth

Which QB do you want the Bills to draft?
Webster Guy replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I am going all in with TT and not wasting a pick on another project. EJ can be backup this year. Our cap situation is forcing us to have value players that can contribute immediately. We need pass rushers and fast linebackers and another safety now. Forget the QB position for this year. -
I think the offensive line will still be a huge issue for the Patriots this season. Getting Jonathan Cooper at guard in the Chandler Jones trade will help, but they were awful, and as we know better than anyone, offensive lines need time to develop chemistry and rhythm. You can't just fix them in one offseason. They have people to throw it and catch it, but if the line struggles it will be tough going for Brady. We played them close last game, Rex's defense was starting to catch fire. I think we split with them this year.

Could Bills draft QB in 1st Round and trade Tyrod?
Webster Guy replied to bisonbrigade's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I could see Whaley doing something ballsy like that if Tyrod wasn't such a quality human being. The guy has such a solid work ethic, drive and passion for the game that it simply doesn't make sense to let him go at this point regardless of what your compensation is. I see a leader, great athlete and very accurate longball thrower who doesn't throw picks and has been properly groomed for the job. Needs to see the field better, protect his body better, and improve his short passing/timing throws. I wouldnt trade the guy for a 1st overall pick right now, the position is too important and he might become great. -
NFL.com: Bills #1 need in draft is OT
Webster Guy replied to BuffaloBill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No way we go RT in the first. Best 5 tech beast available. Drafting in our range is interesting because a few big names will inevitably slide and we might get a call to trade down. If that happens I could see us taking Dodd, who will be there late first round, and then going WR/LB/OT with the next 3.
