One of the primary things different about NFL over almost every other pro sport? At week 13 teams have NOT been ruled out of playoff chance. it means that your 6-6 teams are “In the hunt”. Once you lock out teams too early—ratings drop dramatically, seats go empty. NFL is almost globally unique in this way. Not good for ratings business to have final 5 games become meaningless.
