Buffalo is getting a good player at 54
Bob in STL replied to 78thealltimegreat's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Possible that 2 of them will be Bills -
He was a Bills UDFA first. They must have liked him last year, he went on IR during camp and then was released, then pick up by the Panthers,. He went from their PS and actually played a few games for the Panthers before getting hurt again. This acquisition is like getting a 6th/ 7th rounder so Beane can possibly toss one of his 6/7 rounders into a minor move up.

It is interesting. I grew up in the 60=70's and RB was one of the most critical positions. Teams had a starting halfback (speed) and a fullback (power). Go back to the 50's and early 60's and teams had two halfbacks and a fullback, one halfback was really a wing back (also called a flanker) that could line up on either side and be used as a receiver - this eventually evolved into a full time "wide receiver". Today the defenses are so much faster (and better) that the game has change to predominantly passing with the 3 receiver and one tailback (no fullback) formation as the norm. There are a lot of very good backs to pick from. I suspect we draft one in the 3rd round but either the 2nd or 4th would not be a surprise. I would like whoever we pick to be more of a power runner than Singletary, and have the ability to pass block, then release and catch short passes that can be turned into big gains. Josh needs this to get out of a play when the downfield reads are not there. Even without a #1 this is a very interesting draft. Our confidence in Beane and his staff makes it so.

Changing the Buffalo Draft Goals
Bob in STL replied to BillsVet's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I expect the first three picks (round 2 through 4) to be players that they can see starting in the future (one or two year out), but right now they will be role players (such as EDGE Rush rotation, #2 RB, #4 WR, Nickel/Dime coverage, hybrid SS/LB). Rounds 5 through 7 are players that have an upside but more developmental or special teams. Remember the glory years 90's teams. Marv used to say it was a sign of roster weakness to have to start a rookie. Unless the rookie is a special player, or you get in a pinch from the salary cap, he is correct. -
What was the best season in NFL history?
Bob in STL replied to major's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Agree. 1970 and the entire decade for that matter. That was a great time for the NFL. Add in the start of Monday Night Football. Before ESPN and 24 hour news and sports, watching the halftime highlights with Howard Cosell was your big chance to see great players and great plays from every game. Prior to the merger the NFL games always seemed a bit stodgy, even if they had more star players. The AFL had an exciting and creative brand of football, more so than the NFL. They mined for players everywhere and they made opportunities for black players that were not there prior. Combining the two leagues made one great league. -
True. We have had very few QB controversies in Bills history. Probably because we have had so few good QBs. There was Flutie v. Johnson, by far the biggest. There was a time when some fans screamed for Lamonica every time Kemp slipped up. I even recall people thinking that Gary Mairangi might be better than Joe Ferguson. Of course when he had his chance he proved to be not even close. Over 60 years that is not much … I would not be concerned if they draft another QB (later in the draft) should the board work out that way. That is not a reflection on Allen either, I think this is his team. How many reps did Mahommes get in his rookie year?

Article: McDermott Concerned about PSE Dysfunction

That said, things continue to arise that make one question whether she is qualified to run one professional sports team in any league, let alone 5 teams. -

I think she was a waitress when they met, then he hired her, then he married her ... now she runs PSE. -

It’s only a terrible situation if the Sabres leave, and the NHL dies not want want the team leaving it best TV market in the USA. The thought of the Pegula’s selling the Sabres to a local consortium is appealing. Sell the Sabres and Amerks to Buffalo and Rochester interests. Terry got off on the wrong foot in the NHL. Talking about Stanley Cups with no experience, throwing money at marginal free agents, and the continuous instability. He turned the Sabres into the California Golden Seals. They have no inside hockey people helping them. Kim Pegula is so far proving to be not qualified to run this empire. Of bigger concern is Beane and McDermott. Terry needs to lock them up for a long time and then take Kim and stay out of their way. -
Is Darrynton Evans Beane’s Draft Crush?
Bob in STL replied to Johnny Hammersticks's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If the guy is a playmaker and helps us win then drafting him in the 3rd round versus 4th round matters not. I don’t understand the theory that great running backs are easy to find. -
Brandon Beane - Please Draft Offensive Playmakers
Bob in STL replied to ColoradoBills's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Singletary will only get better. They key is to stay healthy. If he goes down we have Yeldon. i want to win the AFC East and make noise in the playoffs. We need more than Yeldon for that. I want to draft a RB because we need depth and we need playmakers. I think the 3rd round (maybe even 4th) is a good place to look for a solid contributor type of RB. The very Top Tier prospects will go by the end of the 2nd or early 3rd, but there are a bunch of good options. -
Brandon Beane - Please Draft Offensive Playmakers
Bob in STL replied to ColoradoBills's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Agree that they need more talent on Offense. They need another RB to split time with Singletary - one that can run with power, plus block and catch. I don't at all think that is Yeldon. They could use more talent at OT. They could use better depth at WR (and size) On defense they need more EDGE rush so DL/OLB is important - they need to get younger there. You know the saying, you can never have enough good corners. Now there is talk of a big SS as well. That is 6 picks - Without a #1, If 2 or 3 picks are key contributors (they don't have to start as rookies) then Beane has done well again. -
Any Position the Bills wouldn't take the BPA in Round 2?
Bob in STL replied to BisonMan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don’t think you will see a QB, FB, or TE picked at 54. I think they go BPA on THEIR Draft Board, which is not like the mock draft guru’s at all. I think they want that player to fall in here - OLB/DE or RB/WR or OL. -
How do you judge a good defense?
Bob in STL replied to BritBill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
We are talking about measuring a good defense. Points allowed is one very good measure, but not the only one. Certainly the ability to shut down the other team, not give up long time consuming drives, and get the ball back is important as well. -

Bob in STL replied to BritBill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You look at everything, every detail counts. The Bills lost Super Bowl by 20-19. Giving up 20 points was ok. Giving up yards, first downs, time, and failing to get off the field on 3rd was a problem. Lots of ways to measure effectiveness. -
Which running back do you hope the Bills draft and why?
Bob in STL replied to Logic's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I see Yeldon as a 3. Getting one of the best RBs in the draft for #2 is smart. Easy insurance for Singletary, and he may be even better. The special team RB will either be Taiwan or Senorise. -

Spot on! I agree. We need another running threat to help Singletary. We are Buffalo and we have winter. -
If you want to help the “win now cause” we really need one of the top RBs. I just don’t see Yeldon as a 2nd runner. pick 54 depends on what’s there but I would take the clear cut BPA from RB/WR/CB/Edge. If I don’t get a RB at 2, then I grab one in the 3rd.

#3 reminds me of the Sabres Slug Logo - which is a bad thing.

Beane Draft Day Aggression - Trade up for Delpit
Bob in STL replied to Mark80's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I am not in favor of trading up for a safety and giving up additional picks in rounds 3 or 4. I think we can really get help our offense by staying put. Shenault or another top talent could fall to us in round 2, and there definitely will be a quality RB for us in round 2 AND/OR round 3. There still could be a strong OT prospect in rounds 2/3 or a strong OG prospect in round 3/4. Since our line is pretty good now and just starting to gel with a second full year together we could develop these players slowly, the way winning teams do. If we do go defense in rounds 2/3 I think we need to look at an infusion of youth at OLB/DE (edge), or if a CB falls then that could be the pick. I think a Safety can be addressed in later rounds, like 5/6. Thankfully, Beane gets to make these decision and not me, but it is fun to play GM at this time of year. -
“One-Hit Wonders” for every NFL Team
Bob in STL replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well no. Riddick played 6 years as a back up and a solid ST player. 1988 was his final season and he had 12 TD’s rushing as a short yardage specialist and 1 TD receiving .
