I think it's fair to say that philosophically, Belichick and Spagnulo run a system that's the polar opposite of this one. And combined they are responsible for 6 of the last 11 super bowl wins (I know the success of those teams kind of speaks for itself). Bend/don't break hasn't historically been the key to unlocking successful championship runs. The talk at the end of last season was we might finally see something of a renaissance regarding the way McDermott viewed his personnel and defensive concepts. But I just don't think that guy has it in him to stray too far from his comfort zone.

The Eagles didn't just move on for not winning a championship with Reid-- I think a lot of people forget the circumstances there. They moved on after they spent big in a 2011 off-season where they were called the "dream team", and then proceeded to miss the playoffs and win only 8 games. This was followed by a 2012 season which was a complete implosion: they won 4 games that year and finished with two QB's on their active roster: a washed up Mike Vick and... Trent Edwards. Most coaches no matter how good they are, will be fired after two seasons of that nature when the QB situation is in flux and you're prime for a rebuild. The Bills will always be likely to keep McDermott if he maintains a stranglehold on the division with double digit wins and Josh as a healthy active starter, even if the playoff success is middling. But if we have a disaster-type season like the 2012 Eagles did? I think it shouldn't even be a question to move on.

If we immediately shifted to an offense built around Cook the way the late drought teams were built around Shady and ask Trubisky to be Tyrod Taylor and not throw the games away— I mean there’s probably a timeline where we get to over .500 But as division winner we play the other strongest teams, who would in all likelihood each of them roll us. It’s more likely than not we’d see a season reminiscent of the 2 win Colts when Peyton Manning went down — and that team had impact players on both sides of the ball (although I do think for whatever his faults, McDermott is a much better coach than Jim Caldwell). The only things you could say for certain is we’d be in no way a Super Bowl contender and we’d have a chance for McBeane to prove they’re not being hard carried by a once in a generation QB.
