The Bills are doing an excellent job in Free Agency
juno999 replied to 1B4IDie's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No one likes seeing the roster turnover and letting good players go. Sometimes it can't be helped though without jeopardizing the overall quality of the team. The Bills picked up Graham, Rivers, and Spikes and at worse improved their overall depth and special teams. Byrd didn't want to be here and I think the Bills did pretty well on their "backup plan" if Byrd left. Levitre left for $ 8 million a year with the Titans. The Titans just signed Michael Oher to a ridiculous contract. Levitre is good but he can only play LG. He can't play center or tackle. Do you overpay him or let him go? The Bills did the right thing by letting Levitre go. I'm sure it wasn't easy watching him walk. Where the Bills messed up was overestimating the talent they had at LG and not bringing anyone else in via the draft once Levitre left. This year, the Bills don't have any glaring holes entering the draft. They can get a WR, TE, and OT in their first 3 picks and take BPA after that. This is awesome. They are less likely to reach to fill a need and teams drafting around them will have no idea who or what position the Bills are looking at. -
If you consider all of the starting positions, RT and FS are the weakest positions on the Bills roster. Whaley says they already have a SS on the roster, so no safety at #9. If a starting RT is available in the second or third round, no need to take one at #9. My guess is they either trade down or take BPA.

Manny Lawson, what will become of him?
juno999 replied to Buftex's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Lawson is a versatile player and he is not expensive. Plus, Spikes and Rivers are primarily run stoppers and not 3 down LBs. Worse case scenario for Lawson is he'll be rotated in on passing downs. -
Change in running philosophy that makes CJ expendable?
juno999 replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Spiller is an exciting back to watch especially when he is in the open field. A concern that I have is he is not that big of a back. He is not really built to run between the tackles and take all those hits on a regular basis. His contract runs out after the 2014 season. How much do you pay a guy like Spiller who is not a primary back and gets nicked up fairly regularly? -

Agree with you. I would add Branch in the mix as well. Regarding Williams, perhaps the Bears share some of the blame by reaching for Williams in the 1st round. There are several college OTs who don't have enough skills to play OT in the NFL. They end up at guard. -

I'm a Bills fan in DC. Skins fans are down here pissing and moaning to no end. Fans want their teams to get better and show no patience. The Bills made some solid signings today but nothing flashy which is probably good. God Bless the obsessive fan! Cheers!! -
Williams was their first FA visitor so based on that he might have been high on their list. Rivers' signing may be a result of Brinkley and McClain coming and leaving w/o a contract.

Overmatched both as a pass protector and run blocker? Ouch! Don't we already have that in Legursky?

Approval Poll: F.O.'s Handling of Byrd
juno999 replied to johnwalter's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think the Saints got a good player but paid too much for a guy who has bad feet. Their cap situation is pretty bad and they still have Jimmy Graham to work out. On the surface, this signing looks good today but in a couple of years maybe not. -

Who thinks the Bills will trade up?
juno999 replied to RunninRebel37's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This draft is pretty deep. If one of the top QBs is there at 9, I could see the Bills possibly trade down like last year. Otherwise they take Evans or an OT. -
Jairus Byrd [was Jarius Byrd]
juno999 replied to Iowabillsfan4life's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree and I think this is the Bills stance as well. Use the would be tag money for Byrd on a top tier FA and get a player who wants to be here 3 - 4 years. If Byrd is in fact gone, I wouldn't be surprised if the Bills try to trade down 5 - 8 spots in the first round like last year. The key for the Bills is to have another strong draft. -
How do you help the defense and EJ at the same time?
juno999 replied to bisonbrigade's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Bills need to upgrade the O line. Not saying they need to spend a 1st round pick but they need a RT and a LG. The Bills really struggled in the red zone scoring touchdowns. While they need a playmaker WR and a TE, they need lineman who can control the line and create creases for the running game. The Bills simply settled for too many field goals last year. -
What did we get for Marshawn Lynch?

Sarcasm, right? They have two championship rings to our zero. -
My pre-combine draft thoughts, how about yours
juno999 replied to simpleman's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It is early in the offseason. No free agency yet and not even the combine. As the team stands right now in personnel, they should focus on getting better in their red zone offense - too many field goals. Some may point to play calling, which may be part of the problem, but the Bills need to create mismatches by having more/better playmakers on offense. So a big WR, quality TE should be their focus. Also an upgrade at LG and RT should be a priority. On defense, we need a bigger ILB who can stuff the run and move Kiko to OLB. I also think the Bills should try to upgrade on Summers. They really could use a big back for 3rd and short situations. -

Comprehensive Bills O line evaluation thread

6. draft a center in round 4-5. Didn't the Bills extend Woods contract at the beginning of the season? Or is this pick to be a backup center? -
My assertion was "He wouldn't fire Crossman." The Bills finished 30th overall in special teams. Fact. The Bills suck on special teams. My opinion but highly probable a fact as well. Fire Crossman. My opinion but based on this board highly approved. Keep Crossman. Fact but very controversial based on this board. Let me ask you this. What is your justification in keeping Crossman?
-
Giving Marrone full credit for firing one coach when a second firing, Crossman, is needed. That's erroneous.
-
The thread and my post are about Crossman not Hilliard. You want to give Marrone credit for firing Hilliard. Alright. If Marrone addressed the WR position coach situation that is great. One problem solved. However one problem remains. Let's not settle for half measures.
-
So far, the only legit reason to keep Crossman is he's only had one season with the Bills. Even this reason is crap! The Bills STs were awful on coverage teams and they had essentially no explosive plays in the return game. Plus, as noted earlier, Bills STs in the Browns and 2nd Pats game killed the Bills. Based on his prior performance as ST coach, hiring Crossman was a dubious decision in the first place and Marrone not canning him now is a disgrace. Where's the accountability? Can't wait for Marrone to talk next year about a Bills' loss that falls squarely on the Bills STs. If Marrone had canned Crossman, it would have been a breath of fresh air. A HC who was willing to admit he made a mistake and make a change. But no. Marrone takes care of one of his cronies instead and blames the players. Geesh, 14 years and counting!
