I’m over this defensive scheme. Bring in a new DC.
BarleyNY replied to Alphadawg7's topic in The Stadium Wall
Frazier deserves his share of the blame here, but this is McDermott’s defense. It’s not as simple as firing Frazier. If the next DC just runs McD’s scheme with McD’s players, it’ll have similar results. -
Replacing McDermott with a much better HC is as terrible as continuing to dump resources into a defense that collapses in the playoffs every season? I guess we have different concepts of what terrible ideas are. And what a great coach is.

McBeane's constant use of premium draft picks on role players
BarleyNY replied to Process's topic in The Stadium Wall
This has been a gripe of mine too. Using 3 picks in the second and third rounds on stable RBs, a second on a back up DL in Basham, a first on Rousseau. Let me speak to the strategy I think was employed with the Rousseau pick. I see him as a solid complementary DE who only will be here through his fifth year option. That’s because he’s a first round pick at DE and the expected extension with his drafting team will be a lot higher than his value. Exceptions happen where the player take their MV with that team, but they’re rare. So this was a cost control move by the Bills. It cleared space for Von Miller so I get it, but it’s a short term, win now move at the expense of long term team building. A backup DL in the second round who will be here for no more than four seasons is even more egregious. Back to Rousseau. Late first round picks don’t have that high of a success rate - 1 in 3 get a second contract IIRC. It’s 1 in 2 for the whole first round. So again, I get it. But when you don’t have success in that early window, you screw yourselves long term. That seems to be the path we’re on. -
McBeane's constant use of premium draft picks on role players

Or if it helped in the playoffs -
Thanks. I’d do this year’s first. I don’t think I’d do two firsts. If it’s this years first and another non-first round pick I’m having that conversation.

Sean Payton is under contract. What’s the expected compensation? Yes, he’s a much better coach than McD and I’d swap him out today. But that means blowing it all up in the FO too. Again, I’d be okay with that for Payton. I don’t see another available HC that I’d do it for tho.

The madness of blitzing while the CBs played 10 yards off of the WRs was only compounded by the stupidity of having Edmunds be one of the blitzers. That even happened in the red zone.

Coaching Staff & Other Thoughts On Falling Short in 2022
BarleyNY replied to pocoboy's topic in The Stadium Wall
I’m in favor of both Dorsey and Frazier being replaced because of their performances in the playoffs. But here’s the important thing - the new DC needs to have much more autonomy. Frazier is running McDermott’s defense with McD’s personnel. Changing out the DC won’t matter if the new guy has to do the same thing. -
That’s funny. A couple years ago I predicted that Allen would have an Elway career. Years of him gaining experience while we see years like this followed by new coaches and pieces around him before winning it all a couple times - all with the same team, of course.

Trade Diggs for assets and go to a more controlled ground game.
BarleyNY replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall
No. It is $37.6M if we trade him. If we were to cut him it would be $45.4M in dead cap. Spotrac link -

And only $37.6M in dead cap…….plus the cost of his replacement. -

Now hear me out…… -
Funny how you didn’t mention that until after year 2.

I about lost my mind when we lined up to blitz on third down and had our CBs 10 yards off the line. Easy throw for a first by Burrow.

We’re on to the draft. F***, that hurts!

Let’s all remember that stuff like this is why the Vikings traded Diggs. It’s part of the package with him. I love how much he cares about helping his team win even if it boils over sometimes. In any event Diggs and the Bills are wedded for seasons to come due to his contract.

There’s a real chance that we see a change in the DC and OC this off-season. That’s step 1 toward a HC’s seat warming up. I don’t know if it will happen, but I think it needs to. As part of that change, McDermott needs to cede control of the defense.

Missing Von was big, but I can’t see him in the field changing the outcome of this game. Crowder was a solid addition but he wasn’t changing this outcome either. Besides, every team has to deal with losses. Cincy came into this game missing both OTs and an OG, then their C got hobbled and played on a wonky knee. Who else of note were we missing on the DL that got dominated by the Bengals scrubs?
-
IMO that is why winning it all was so important this year. Lost to the Chefs in the AFCC, then lost to them in the Divisional round. This year we looked like the best team in the AFC and solidly beat KC in the regular season. The arrow was pointing up. Now we just lost to the Bengals in the divisional round. And we weren’t even competitive. So now if feels like we’re running third in the AFC. The arrow isn’t pointing up anymore and that’s tough.

I’ve been discussing how similar the current Allen Bills team is like the Kosar led Browns team in the mid-80s to early 90s. Excellent QB and excellent teams that ran into teams led by Elway (3 times), Marino and Moon. Just couldn’t get over those hurdles in the playoffs.

Post of the day. That sums it up perfectly. Maybe Milano. He played like he wanted to win a championship today. Diggs would’ve started for Cincy, but not at WR1 over Chase or WR2 over Higgins. He’d have started over Boyd in the slot. So arguably, no Bill played better than their counterpart. And certainly no Bills coach coached better than their Bengal counterpart. Ouch.

As they should

So who do we lose to free agency this year?
BarleyNY replied to bills6969's topic in The Stadium Wall
Not adjusting? What was their game plan? Either it was to pass 80% of the time or they planned a more balanced attack and abandoned that. And what was with the repeated downfield passes like last week? I sure hope that wasn’t the game plan. Either Dorsey is game planning way too much of that or he isn’t reigning in Josh when he gets in that mode. -
McBeane's investment in the D Line last five seasons
BarleyNY replied to Process's topic in The Stadium Wall
The thing with Rousseau is that he has no bend and limited lateral agility. He is great at stacking and shedding and his exceptional length gives him great range to get to ball carriers. But he needs a great bend-the-edge DE like Von Miller opposite him to flush QBs to his side. He’ll get the occasional bull rush sack or open lane sack, but he’s limited and is going to disappear without a player on the field doing what Von can. Oliver is a very good player. He should get his fifth year option picked up.* Him sticking around long term will probably depend on his contract demands. Keeping him long term might be tough. *edit: Oliver already had his 5th year option picked up last off-season. He will play on it next season unless he signs an extension. -

BarleyNY replied to bills6969's topic in The Stadium Wall
42 passes (plus a sack) by Allen, 8 rushes by Allen, 6 rushes by Motor and 5 rushes by Cook. That’s ridiculous. Way too many deep shots today (just like last week) and not enough taking what the defenses are giving us. And not nearly enough rushing. As for the defense, McDermott bears the blame as much as Frazier. He might not be calling the plays, but it’s his baby and his fingerprints are all over the personnel and scheme. The Bills went with a defensive HC, which means we have to deal with our successful OCs turning over. The trade off has to be a stellar defense. You can’t have the failures we’ve seen in the postseason. The answer to your stud DE snapping an ACL can’t be to repeatedly blitz Edmunds over and over again despite his utter ineffectiveness at it.
