Interesting article about Lombardi. Thanks. There has obviously been an issue with this matter in the NFL, in the past. Warren Moon, and other Houston Oilers players have spoken openly about having 2 gay teammates on those early 90's Oiler teams. There has been specualation over the years over which players those were, nobody knows for sure...but the suicide of Jeff Alm, during the 1993 season has long been rumored to have been the result of being "outed". That wasn't that long ago, but it was also a different generation of players.

Yes, a standout for me as well...also loved the highlights of Bennett (#55) harassing John Elway... I remember being at Rich that day, Bennetts' first game...the Bills lost, but it was a clear sign that the Bills defense had just been amped up a serious notch or two...

Best comment, in the comments on Deadspin article: Elton John (to Sam): Don't worry, it gets bet...(interrupted by TV) Announcer: And with the 11th pick in the fifth round, the Detroit Lions pick Michael Sam, defensive end, Missouri Elton John: So sorry...

The t***y bar by the airport? Never been...what about it?

You must be fairly new around here...whether football season is over, or in full swing, there is a thread on announcers (BIlls fans, by and large, hate all of them!) and the how much WGR55 sucks ass (Bills fans, by and large, hate everything about WGR55) started pretty much every week or two...

It is easy to forget some of the great players we had, even in this mostly miserable century...Spikes, Larry Centers...football season not over for a week, and I am already chomping at the bit...

I wish to god they had stuck with the original plan, and just had McCartney and Starr on the Letterman show (which is recorded at the Ed Sullivan Theater), rather than this thing. I will watch (I hopelessly love the Beatles), but I just cringe at the idea of Maroon 5 sharing the stage with what is left of the Beatles...

Per Bills text Rob Moore hired as WR coach
Buftex replied to Beerball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Alls I know, back in the day, early Madden (Super Nintnedo style, or was it PS1), Rob Moore was the WR I would always trade for my Bills team...he was badass....always put up "Star Wars numbers"! I think this will translate well into coaching the Bills receivers in 2014! -
Remember in the late 80's (IIRC) when they were going to call penalties on the home team, if the crowd was too loud? IIRC, they actually did call it a few times...first time was a warning, as I recall, next time they would take a timeout away from the home team....that rule just kind of faded away... it is only a matter of time before every player is wearing a radio helmet...along with all their concussion proof padding..

Wowzers! I remember Bennett playing when he could barely raise his arms to shoulder level... he played injured a lot... I would never question his effort.

Discussion of The Bills Fan Alliance concept
Buftex replied to Kelly the Dog's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Still like the idea, but somehow, I have this strange feeling the NFL will put the kibosh on this, the more I think about it. It could open up the doors to other franchises doing the same thing. I love the idea, don't get me wrong...but, if it were sucessful, it could be seen as putting too much power over the location of the franchise in the hands of people who don't live in the area, won't likely attend more than a game a season in Buffalo...in the end, 170million dollars just wouldn't cover all the money the NFL could percieve itself to lose by such an arraingement. I don't know, maybe the NFL would have no say in it...but they would have the power to veto any ownership. I will say, I agree with BuffaloRebound about the fact that it would get a lot of attention...maybe the kind we would need to get NFL fan sentiment to take up the cause of the NFL not allowing Buffalo to go Bill-less any time soon...the way everyone is so charmed by the notion of the Green Bay Packers... the Bills really aren't much different...they just don't have the long tradition that the Packers have...thought 54 years is nothing to skoff at. -
CBS will air eight Thursday Night Football games in 2014
Buftex replied to papazoid's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not a huge fan of Thursday night games either....but the advantage is, it increases the likelihood (however small) that a Bills game might be broadcast where I am (Texas) on Sunday afternoon. I do agree, to a degree, that it dilutes the product...but honestly, for me, Thursday nights are just a bad night for football. Been working on Thursday nights for about 10+ years...if there is a game I really want to see, I have to take a night off, or switch a shift with someone. But, there have rarely been "can't miss" games on Thursday nights. I suspect, with CBS getting in on the action, that might change, at least the first half of the season...I am assuming, any Thursday Night Bills game will come in the second half of the season...let's just hope the Bills are still in the hunt when that happens. -
I have lived away from WNY since 1989 (great timing on my part!), but I think I appreciate them more now, than I did then. I would still very much appreciate a Super Bowl victory, but I just don't think in this day and age, a championship resonates as much as it would have been, back then. Now, you gotta repeat, and then you have to win 3 in 4 years, be a "dynasty"...the bar just gets higher and higher. The only one of "my teams" that has ever won a championship that I am old enough to remember (I was less than a year old when the 1965 Bills won their last AFL title), were the 1981, 1984, 1986 and 2008 Boston Celtics. I enjoyed the hell out of the 2008 Celtics win...but it just wasn't quite the same as those 1980's titles. The 2008 Celtics weren't reigning champs for 24 hours before their championship was framed with "what do the Lakers have to do to win it all next year?" I remember too, when the Sabres made it to the Stanley Cup finals in 1999...I was living in the middle of Texas...Stars country for anyone who cared about hockey (not many)...I just remember, going into those finals, gettting really melancholy because there was possibiltiy that one of my teams was going to finally win a championship, and absolutely nobody but me would care...but the Sabres saw to it that I didn't have to suffer!

I remember when Wes Welker signed as a FA from the Dolphins to the Patriots... I said to anyone who would listen "oh ****, the Patriots just got the second coming of Steve Tasker!" Welker was a fantastic special teamer as well, while with Miami.

Discussion of The Bills Fan Alliance concept
Buftex replied to Kelly the Dog's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Finances are not my thing, but I would be willing to donate, if this ever did come to fruition. As dubs points out, this is a great way for Bills fans living both in and out of WNY (I am an ex-WNYer myself) to put their money where their heart is, rather than passing the costs on to WNYers who don't care about this issue... my biggest concern is how sustainable is this? Say they raise the stated 170 million (which seems like a small amount in the bigger scheme of things...but like I said, I am not a financial guy), and the new ownership group promises to keep the team in town for X amount of time...they keep their promise...do we need to raise another 170 million every time that deadline approaches? -
Andre Reed Elected into the Pro Football HOF
Buftex replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What freaks me out, his voice sounds just like my fathers, at certain times. But you are right, he sounds lucid as ever...and is still pretty quick witted. VCR Alert: Tonight (Wednesday 2/5/14) the NFL Network will air a special, profiling the 2014 HOF class...it will be on at 9pm eastern, and re-run again at midnight...so, you can still catch the Sabres/Penguins game on NBC Sports (could it be Ryan Millers' last game as a Sabre?) and catch the midnight feeding! -
And I hated Keith McKellar for a while after that game, for making a meaningless catch, inside the hash marks, that wasted about 15 seconds of precious clock...but it subsided. I know a lot of folks have their criticisms of Jim Kelly, especially for XXV, but in his mind, he was "just doing what got us here".
