Two episodes in, this show is fantastic so far. Anyone else watching "True Detective" on HBO? Never a big Matthew McCounnghy fan, but he is superb...new found respect. Woody Harrelson is great too...great writing, great dialogue...eerie story....can't wait for more. Disappointed to find that the first season is only 8 episodes....but I will take what I can get with something of this quality. Also, it is an "anthology" series, meaning in season two, it will be different characters and a different story. Not crazy about that format, but I have a lot of faith in HBO television series to get it right.

Would have loved to see them with Kim Shattuck....she is one of my favorites. Either way, looks like a good show!

Perhaps Marrone feels more qualified to make the assessment of coaches than some clowns on the internet? Jus a hunch. -
Bills hire Jim Schwartz DC, Todd Downing QB coach
Buftex replied to FluffHead's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Can't remember all the details anymore, but I do remember, one of the seasons when Wade Phillips was our DC (an elite DC, as far as I am concerned), there was bunch of injuries...mid-season he had to change from a 4-3, to a 3-4...the big talk at the time was (Dan Dierdorf voice) "you can't switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4 overnight, it just can't be done in the NFL, this is the end of the Buffalo Bills run"...as I recall, the Bills defense didn't miss a beat. -

I am cool with Schwartz...was hoping for somebody a little more accomplished for the QB job. A "guru" type. Downig has been in the NFL coaching ranks for 12 years, but is only 33. I guess that is not a big deal, but the biggest criticism of Matt Stafford has been poor mechanics...EJ's biggest issue. But hell, what do I know? -

Got to admit, I haven't seen a ton of Lions games over the last few years, but he constant complaint I have heard about Stafford (and it was very loud this year) was that he is lazy, and that his mechanics, and inability to correct them, are what have held him back from being an elite QB...and kept the Lions out of the playoffs. At the very least though, everyone seems to think EJ is "very coachable".... just a curious hire, and I am little more leery of this than I am of the Schwartz hire...a guy doesn't normally (ignoring Hank Bullough) get a head coaching job in the NFL unless he has something going for himself. -

Been kind of out of the loop all day...any word on which Bills staff that Pettin is taking to Cleveland with him? I know most didn't want Donnie Henderson as DC, but I sure hope he stays on our staff...did a great job with the secondary, and the players seem to love playing for him... -

I find the Downing hire a little more puzzling. EJ needs work on mechanics...Downing was the QB coach for the Lions the last two years...Stafford has bad mechanics... hope he can do a better job with Manuel. -

Huh...like a lot of things with the Bills lately, just hmm... not sure how to feel about this, but at the very least, not an inexperienced college guy. Isn't Downing the QB coach from the Lions too? If your going to steal, might as well do it from the best... -
I imagine it is not unlike many were here, when Marrone got hired... not sure how that is working out!

If we learned nothing about Wade from his time in Buffalo, he is flexible. He can coach the 4-3, or the 3-4. That said, I don't think it is going to happen.

Pettine has officially signed on as coach of the Browns
Buftex replied to cale's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
They do have some talent on their roster (more than the Bills, I don't know), and Pettine, if nothing else, showed in one season in Buffalo, he can get the most out of underachieving players. However, not so sure about the OC, or any of their assistants, to be honest with you. With the way their coaching search went, and their reputation for being impulsive, they may have the same problem the Bills have had for years, in attracting established assistant and position coaches...any OC they hire, from the sounds of it, will have their fortunes tied to Johnny Manziel. That may or may not be a bad thing, but the it sure sounds like ownership there is as meddlesome as it could possibly be...not sure how many established guys would want to sign up for that...but, again, I suppose there are only so many jobs to go around. My hope is, Pettine does not nab Pepper Johsnon as his DC. I am guessing Petttine has been coaching long enough that he has guys in mind that aren't necessarily big name guys. Oh well, was hoping this wouldn't happen, but life goes on... -

Does One Decision Influence Another ?
Buftex replied to T master's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It is important to remember, that Bills defense could be better under another co-ordinator. Could go either way. But what scares me most about the prospect of Pettine leaving, is a change in defensive philosophy. We had a number of guys on defense this year, who had been disappointing, or underachieving to varying degrees for the last few years, who made huge leaps in their performance level. The defense was far from perfect, but was dominating at times...to a man, whenever I heard any of the defensive guys interviewed after a good game, they commented on how much they loved playing in Pettines' defense, and how this was the "best defensive system I have played in" for me. Alan Branch, kind of a slightly above average journeymen to this point, had a great season in Buffalo, and didn't hestitate to re-sign in Buffalo, despite the "losing atmosphere". He could have likely singed elsewhere for the same money, or even more...but he cited the defensive system as being perfect for him. Dareus excelled, all the Williams, McKelvin...I just hope, whatever happens, we are running the same defense next year. Byrd was a reluctant Bill in 2013, then seem to lose the bitterness that the season started with and also talked about loving the system in place...by the end of the season, however, he seemed back in his cautious stance...I didn't get a good feeling about him returning at the end of the season, no matter who he DC is. I just think, if they lose Pettine, to Byrd, it will just be a signal of "more of the same"...just the way most Bills fans are interpreing it. Of course, losing Pettine, will be of no fault of the Bills, but it will still be perceived by many as yet another failure on their part. What I wish guys like Byrd would keep in mind, when you demand an exceptionally high salary, you will rarely get it, and will likely be a free-agent again, in 2 or 3 years....your salary demands often handcuff your team in other areas (thus extending the losing culture you are trying to break out of), and when the big payout comes, a team would just assume cut you (unlesss you are a QB) than pay you. Cracks me up that Drew Brees, after all his bellyaching about his contract last year, holding out when his team could have really used him, gets his big deal, and now, in 2013 is chirping that he is willing to re-structure, to take a paycut, to help keep his team together...where was that attitude in 2012? Just wish these guys would look at the salary they are being offered (as opposed to what everyone else is making) and decide if it is a fair wage. The Bills may not be offering to make him one of the top three highest paid safeties in the NFL, but I bet they are making him a pretty nice offer.
