I was going to echo this. Connolly has some funny stuff. -
The 1947-1949 Cleveland Browns went 29 straight games without a defeat, including two championships. Let's look at that: Starting in the 1947 season, they finished on a winning streak, including the championship. They go through the entire 1948 season without a defeat, including the championship game. They proceed to go into the 1949 season and continued without a defeat. For ten straight years, they went to the championship game and won seven of them, including five straight championships.

I like Jim's the best, but I understand if others do not like them. Following what others have said, if you want a steak, go for Jims. If you want a great sammich, go to the Reading Terminal. Those are within walking distance.

I talked to Dan Rooney about this before he became ambassador. I specifically brought the issue of small-market cities and their ability to financially compete. His answer was that you need to find other and more creative ways of generating revenue to compete. He had no sympathy for any owner who says that they cannot compete financially. He found ways to do it. There are no excuses. As far as a winning tradition, part of it comes from the attitude in the front office. Ron Wolf mentioned that to me when we were talking about how he changed things in Green Bay when he arrived. They had a culture of losing. His first task was to change the attitude. Don't think of yourself as substandard and not able to compete with the larger cities. You can win and you will win if everyone has the proper attitude. If not, there are plenty of other people who are willing to do your job. I saw that attitude in Pittsburgh when I was there. The first thing you see when you arrive in the offices was a glass-enclosed room that housed the Lombardi Trophies that they won. That is the first thing you see when you arrive and the last thing you see when you leave. It hits you immediately. Success is expected. The walls are lined with team photos and photos of prominent players. History is very important to them.

I had the exact opposite experience with him. Granted, it was only about a 20 minute conversation, but he was very friendly the entire time.

I was fortunate to have met him. My wife and I still remember the weekend we spent at his place. A very generous host. I cannot believe how much time has passed since we were at his funeral. RIP, buddy.

I have regular conversations with a former GM of an NFL team. He loves to watch old games. He refuses to watch it on DVD. He only wants VHS. When he says he watches tape, he really means it. Some people still prefer it.

I was going to try and stay out of this thread, but I just wanted to say something. While these players volunteered to play the game, there is no reason why a multi-billion dollar industry cannot toss a few more scraps to the older players in need. The most rewarding, and sometimes the most difficult, part of my job with the PFRA is to talk to retired players. To see how some of these players have degraded is heartbreaking. I talked to one who degraded so far that all he could do was make unintelligibile noises. Another went from a vibrant, talkative person, so someone who knows that they are suffering and has started to clam up (does not want to let on that he is suffering). The one small bright-spot in talking to him was when he talked about his grandkids who were visiting at the time. It was a phone conversation, but you could just picture him smiling and waving at them while he was talking. His voice changed and you could hear true happiness. This guy might make it into the Hall of Fame, but I wonder how much of the experience he is going to recognize and appreciate. I have talked to his teammates, and they break down when the talk about him and what has happened to him. The list goes on. I am committed to doing what I can to help them. I run the Philadelphia Chapter of the NFL Alumni members and I will have a fundraiser in June. For those who want to help, I appreciate it. For those who don't, that is fine. -
Sorry. Nothing in my files. If you need contact info for someone at the Bills or Chargers, PM me.

Best way to get a hold of a player for media

Short of personal relationships, going the official route is the best way. The best ways are what have been mentioned: -Bills PR department -Player's agent You can try the NFLPA, but I doubt you will get anywhere. Deal with the team or the player's agent. You can try to get to the player directly, but you would probably get shot down pretty fast. Official requests through the team or agent carry more weight. If this is going to be a long-term project, I suggest starting to cultivate relationships now. It may not bear fruit immediately, but it pay off down the road. Have established contacts with teams, agents, players, NFLPA, NFL Alumni, NFL Offices, HOF, various media outlets, etc. Having good contacts has helped me land interviews with people who usually refuse interviews. Best of luck with the project!! -

It is extremely tough for a contributor to get in. The selectors do not want to "waste" a spot on a non-player. That is why they used the seniors process for LeBeau. They did not want to "waste" a spot on an assistant coach. So, they snubbed their noses at the rules and put him in through the seniors process. Meanwhile, deserving seniors get ignored. They put Sabol in last year and they will probably put in Parcells in a year or two. That still leaves worthy candidates like Wolf and Eddie in the wings. It's possible that he gets in, but I would not put money on it.

Petition the HOF. They pick the selectors.
