For those interested, here is my "Where Are They Now" piece on Marlin Briscoe for National Football Post. Where Are They Now: Marlin Briscoe
-
Even though it did not get into the NFL constitution until the 1960s, the attitude actually goes back to the late 1940s (with a Buffalo connection). When the AAFC was merging with the NFL, Buffalo tried to get a team. Owner Jim Breuil did not want to continue. A community effort took place to get a team, including selling shares. The NFL turned this down. They wanted one person who had the authority to act alone for meetings, etc. Even if you appoint an executive director or president to run things, they still go through a board of directors for approval on major items. Buffalo did not have one person who could act unilaterally. Buffalo had other issues, which ultimately prevented them getting a team, but that is when this philosophy became public.

Pro Football Hall Of Fame canidates announced

Exactly what Rico mentioned. I wouldn't put him in. Honestly, I would put Clark Shaughnessy in before any of the coaches listed. -
Pro Football Hall Of Fame canidates announced

What I think will happen: Brooks Strahan Dungy Bettis Jones or Shields Humphrey Since Strahan did not get in last year, I think they make an effort to get him in this year. I am on the fence as to whether they will put Bettis in this year. If they put in a coach, I think that Dungy goes in first of the group listed. There is some push for Tags, but I do not think that it is strong enough yet. They may put in both seniors candidates, but I think that Guy may be left out. However, if they put in a special teamer, it is going through the seniors committee and not the modern candidates. They seem to like using the seniors canididates as a way to not "waste" a modern era spot on people (see LeBeau, Dick). I see that as the only way someone like Tasker would make it. If Reed does not make it this year, I think he falls into the seniors abyss. There are too many other receivers they would want to put in and Reed would get lost in the shuffle. -
Got it.

It is possible. The next time I talk to him, I will ask him about it.
-
That is what he told me. I didn't even ask him about it. He volunteered the information.

Don't be shocked if Tingelhoff is one of the seniors candidates for the PFHOF next year (Class of 2015). He almost made it this year. He should have been in the HOF by now.
-
He will be back in Buffalo for the Chiefs game.

~NG~ hasn't been on the board for two months
KRC replied to \GoBillsInDallas/'s topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Sorry to hear that, NG. Thoughts go out to you and your family. -
I was fortunate enough to have talked football with him for about 30-45 minutes. It was great talking about those days. Wonderful guy and a lot of fun!! Little known fact: He was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 1949 (17th round, 131 overall). When the AAFC folded and they had their dispersal draft, Baltimore selected his rights from Buffalo after the third round (pick 40 overall). If the AAFC had stuck around another year, Donovan may have been a Buffalo Bill. The Giants drafted him in 1947. Another little known fact: His first three seasons were with teams that folded: 1950 Baltimore Colts, 1951 New York Yanks, 1952 Dallas Texans. It was not until the second incarnation of the Baltimore Colts before his team lasted (until they moved to Indy). R.I.P. Art.

Being 6-4 and 255 helps.

Cookie Gilchrist, Daryle Lamonica enshrined into the HOVG

We talked briefly about his time with Gilchrist. I am going to have an extended interview with him in a few weeks. Will do. -

I just got off the phone with Daryle Lamonica. I have him set up to be on Sirius XM NFL radio tonight at 9pm eastern. The focus of his interview is his induction into the Hall of Very Good. -

Thank you. The term "great" is overused to the point that it is meaningless. I prefer to reserve that term for the truly elite. Also, the HOVG is not meant as a replacement of the HOF. It is for people who have had excellent careers, but are not in the HOF. Do I feel that some of the HOVG players should be in the HOF? Yes. People like Dilweg, Wistert, and Slater should be in. -
The kid might be a little off. John Turney and Nick Webster of the PFRA have gone through the films and came up with 173.5 for Jones. I have been buried in the NFL Films archives with them. I trust their research more than anyone.

Who should be in that is not in right now? Keep in mind that a lot of the older players were also special teamers. -
Exactly. You need to have content that people are willing to pay for at the price you need to stay in business. I publish a magazine through the PFRA and it is not easy.
-
His name comes up with the seniors selectors, but there is not enough momentum yet. I interviewed him after we inducted him into our Hall of Very Good. He thinks he has a shot, but I am not seeing it yet. I will have to gauge the selectors this year.

St. Bernardus abt. 12

The person has to have been retired for at least 25 years. Possible. It would depend on who else was nominated that year.
-
Thank you!! I think that he did know about the players. It was not coaching. He definitely prepared to know who was in the previous Hall of Very Good classes and who were finalists this year. Here is the link to the main page: http://www.profootballresearchers.org/ Here is the direct link to join the PFRA: http://www.profootballresearchers.org/join.htm You can use either PayPal or mail a check. A few more for you: Chet Mutryn - Good. He should be in. Benny Boynton - Possible. He should be in. George Ratterman - Possible, but unlikely. Al Baldwin - Possible, but unlikely.
